Luke 6:17, 20-26

W hen we think of the word “Beatitude” we think of today’s discourse from Luke’s Gospel, or the

more familiar one from Matthew (which begins “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ”). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in John’s Gospel, Christ proclaims, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short reminders about the characteristics that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the “Blessed,” for they are the ones who lived the “blessed” life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beatitude! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

T W R C . As we follow Jesus' ministry in Mark’s Gospel, we witness Jesus' discouragement as he again encounters the challenges of the religious leaders. As they retreat to the other side of the lake, Jesus warns his disciples against the rebellious "leaven" of the Pharisees and reminds them of the meaning of the miracle of the loaves - he is like God, come to feed them in whatever desert journey they encounter. Jesus heals a blind man - a scene which begins the journey to Jerusalem on which Jesus tries to heal the blindness of his disciples. Peter acknowledges Jesus as the Christ but rejects Jesus' instruction that he must suffer and die before the resurrection. Jesus rebukes him and instructs his disciples about their discipleship. It is about taking up our own cross with him. Then Jesus takes Peter, James and John and shows them his glory, to prepare them for the scandal of the cross. T he Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus provides the opportunity for online giving. Now would be a

great time to start taking advantage of it. It’s the beginning of the fiscal year for Sacred Heart. We’re also right in the midst of summer vacations when it’s so easy to forget about your tithe to the parish.

E-giving is a convenient and safe way to make one-time or automatically recurring donations via your bank account or credit card. This system is more convenient for the parish than electronic checks from your bank and convenient for you because you can make changes at any time. Getting started is easy — just visit our website (www.sacredheartatlanta.org) and click on our “E-Giving” link just below the photos. Please take a look at the site and if you have any questions regarding your gift, contact the office directly at 404-974-2246 or by email to [email protected].

M onsignor Churchwell loved his Sacred Heart community,

and the physical structure of the building itself was important to him, as it served as the home of the community he held so dear. In memory of Monsignor Churchwell, a Save the Spires memorial fund has been established in his name with a goal of $68,000 -- $1,000 for each year of his life. We are so close! We have commitments to that fund of $54,288. Please help us honor this wonderful man who spent so much of his priesthood ministering to the people of Sacred Heart. If you wish to participate, please note on the memo line of your donation check: Save the Spires, in memory of Monsignor Churchwell.

S erving over 1,000,000 Catholics, the mission of the Archdiocese of Atlanta is to proclaim the Gospel of the Lord, and grow all of North Georgia in faith, hope, love, and service to others. Together, we are God’s hands and feet, sharing

God’s compassion and mercy, and demonstrating “Go, therefore, and make disciples.”

Your gift to the 2019 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal helps makes it possible by supporting the ministerial, outreach, education, formation, and discipleship work of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Please read the material that has been included with your Sunday bulletin.

Please give prayerful consideration to your level of support to help fund the essential ministries and services supported by the Appeal. Next weekend, we will hear a recorded message from Archbishop Gregory about the Appeal and everyone who has not yet made a gift to the Appeal will have the opportunity during our in-pew process. Please be prepared next week to make a pledge to the 2019 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal.

To learn more about the appeal, and to donate online, visit appeal.archatl.com. A video of Archbishop Gregory’s Appeal message is also available online.
