GATHERING Voluntary Chorale Prelude: AUF MEINEN LIEBEN GOTT Johann Nicolaus Hanff
In My Beloved God (I trust…)
*Prayer of the Day Almighty and everlasting God,
in Christ you have revealed
your glory among the nations.
Preserve the works of your mercy,
that your church throughout the world
may persevere with steadfast faith
in the confession of your name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever. Amen. *Hymn 385 bulletin, p. 5 All People that on Earth Do Dwell OLD HUNDREDTH
*Prayer of Confession
Merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you
with our whole heart and mind and strength.
We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
In your mercy, forgive what we have been,
help us amend what we are,
and direct what we shall be,
that we may delight in your will
and walk in your ways
to the glory of your holy name.
Silence is kept.
Congregational responses are in bold print.

Gloria in Excelsis Deo (“Glory to God in the
Highest”) is a hymn of

The reader offers a
phrase to mark the end
of each reading, such as,
The Word of the Lord, or
Holy Wisdom, Holy Word.
The assembly responds,
Thanks be to God.
The hymn sung
immediately before the
reading of the Gospel is
called the Gradual, or
Gradual Hymn, which
refers to the step
(Latin gradus) from which
it was chanted in
medieval church practice. After the reading of the
Gospel the reader says,
The Gospel of the Lord.
The assembly responds,
Praise be to you, O
Christ.
*Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles’ Creed Hymnal, Page 35 (front)
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;
he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand
of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge
the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic church; the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Prayer of Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise . . . *The Lord’s Prayer Hymnal, p. 35 (front)
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, forever. Amen.

Various forms of the
Apostles’ Creed were
used from the second
century onward.
Eucharist means
“Thanksgiving.”
The Prayer of
Thanksgiving begins
with an exchange
between the minister and
people, called the Sursum
Corda, meaning “hearts
lifted.” This dialogue
dates to the 3rd century
or earlier.

Today marks the 35th anniversary of Brant Copeland’s ministry at First Presbyterian Church.
The three hymns sung this morning (Opening, Gradual, Closing) and the Prayer of Confession were
chosen by Brant for his first service at First Presbyterian on October 20, 1985. The hymnal in use then
was The [red] Hymnbook, pub. 1955, in which the Gradual Hymn was No. 292. The opening voluntary
was a chorale prelude on AUF MEINEN LIEBEN GOTT similar to that heard this morning. The Offertory Hymn was led by the Choral Scholars, each from his/her own home, using the
Acapella app. It was commissioned by First Presbyterian Church for Brant Copeland’s 15th Anniversary
celebration in 2000, and subsequently published in our current hymnal, Glory to God, 2013.

This text celebrates the
radical hospitality that
characterizes Christ’s
welcome, which
transcends time and reaches in all directions
(Matthew 8:11 / Luke
13:29). Saints of old are,
like us, people in need of
forgiveness, and the
response to such pardon
is “thanks and praise.”
