THE CONTINUING ODYSSEYOF DANNY T. HOLIDAYby Tony Richland
Well, Mr. Sophisticate, you're STILL in L.A. for the rrrreallybig convention. You're Danny T. Holiday, of KGOY inFoonman, Ohio, and after three days in ex -Olympia, you'remore than three days older and wiser. Your apple's beenpolished ... your ego's been built ... you're knowing no painand you're feeling no guilt. You've been wined and dined ...you feel kinda refined and what's more, you've decided thatRick Dees is no funnier than your morning man. You've lingered over highballs with the Zimmerman Brothersof the Gavin Report, and after admiring their tuxedoed graceand electric eloquence have determined that you can tellwhich is Keith and which is Kent. You think you spot themat the call -out panel, confidently call out ... "Hi Keith" ...and get slugged by one of the Statler Brothers. Minorsetback. You and Jim Q. Diamond from Hairball, Iowa hop into yourrented Nissan ... formerly Datsun ... and head for BeverlyHills for some high-powered stargazing. You note RodeoDrive, and with your roots in C&W, head for it pronto, thinking you may bump into Mickey Gilley. People aroundyou are calling it Ro-DAY-oh, which you chalk up to WestCoast ignorance. Jim and you decide to pick up a couplepairs of jeans and stroll into a place called Gucci. The 501'sare marked down to $500. a pair. You pass. You stop at a homey looking cafe with an open grill, andafter being seated at a table adjacent to the men's room, askthe waiter for suggestions. After assuring you that he's notreally a waiter but rather a young film-maker, he mentionsthe chef's 'masterful goat -cheese quiche dressed with an elusiveand unpedestrian crayfish mousse, then topped with a richlytextured terrine of baby pigeon breast!' You wonder whereAhmet is when you need him most ... but you tough it outand order the concoction. It tastes not unlike the underseal ofa Volkswagon, and when the young film-maker asks ifeverything is alright you look him in the nose job andmurmur, "Flawed and uneven ... sorry."Time to head back to the convention floor where the Ratingsand Research Symposium is about to commence. Back inFoonman, your research consists of calling all your storeseach week to determine what's sold more than two copies.Usually, it's "Thriller". Most other product sells two or lessand all of THEM are listed on your chart from 2 to 40, in noparticular order. Extras are whatever trickles in fromTetragrammaton and Blue Thumb ... along with anyone elsewith a Punk Gospel mailing list. A motivational researchpsychologist is addressing the dozing crowd, all of whom arekilling time 'til the Buzz Bennett meditation seminar. The guyis talking about records like they're computer chips. You can'tfigure out what Confrontational Electronic Cume Data andMaximized Output Management have to do with YOURstation. YOU add records when KIIS-FM does ... and YOUhire jocks if a headset fits them. This is too high-falutin'. Youhead for the lobby. You run into Rodney McCartney fromKDOG in Dogmeat, Ind. He's now a consultant, but doesn'thave any clients yet. He tells you he left KDOG recently dueto philosophical differences. You ask him what they were. Hesays he showed up drunk at three meetings with hisconsultant.Kal Rudman ambles by ... alone! This looks like a hotchance to meet someone heavy. You approach him and introyourself. He suggests you read Vince Lombardi'sautobiography. You think to yourself ... big deal! You gotthe same career tip from Norberg's column only last week. You decide to clear out. You've had it ... so you'll miss AlJarreau's concert ... so what. You know a WarnersThirdindary promo guy who can get you all his albums.Time to go back to Foonman. It's been a bit much.To Be Continued!

Thanks to the dilligence of our reporters, theshort holiday week did not translate into a shortageof research information. After eight weeks on theTop 40 chart, John Waite not only gets a number one,but still racks up enough reports to land in thenumber two airplay spot, two reports behind TheCars. Still plenty of growth ahead for Huey,Cyndi and Prince. This was also the week Chicagoexploded into the top ten for some, and the toptwenty for many! A Hit Factor increase of 62% to85% is an indication of how well this record isdoing. Bananarama pulls off the first top ten entryin their career, with help from LA's KRLA (4),KIIS/FM (5), San Luis Obispo's KELY (6), Seattle'sKHIT (2), Atlanta's Z-93 (9), and Minot's KIZZ(23-9). WJZR/FM-Charlotte leads the way, takingSheila E. number one - she's also top five inMiami at both Y100 and 1-95, in San Francisco atKMEL, New York at WKTU, WKXX-Birmingham, etc.As mentioned the early part of August, Madonna'sLUCKY STAR is unquestionably her biggest hit todate. Rarely has a third single off an album evertaken off this fast. Stevie Wonder's earned histen point chart jump, with huge gains inside thetop twenty at a majority of the 206 stations re-porting it. Another to check Hit Factor on, withgrowth from 18% to 44%. Strong debut for Elton
John, who increases in airplay from 149 reportsto 205. Not many holdouts left as we head intoits third week of release. Donna Summer hasbeen fighting that log jam down at the bottomof the Top 40, but surfaced this week at KUAD-Windsor 24-12, at KRPL-Moscow 28-23, G100 -Mobile 27-22, KOZE-Lewiston 24-19, WFMF-BatonRouge 25-19 and KCNR-Portland 28-21. The Beesalready charting John Cafferty top ten - B97 -New Orleans (9), and B -94 -Pittsburgh (3), LindseyBuckingham had been suffering the same log jamproblem as Donna Summer, but also pulled aheadwith key moves in Denver, Boston, Modesto/Stockton, Tucson, etc. Diana debuts convincinglywith 34 adds, including KUBE/FM, CFTR, WHHY/FM,KYYA, KSXO , KQID /FM , KITS /FM , KAFM , etc.Another impressive week for Billy Ocean, adding33 new believers to his side, now numbering 153reports. Our "Record To Watch", Prince's PURPLERAIN, though not a single yet, is the most potenttrack currently available to Top Forty programmers, therefore it earns the right to be in that category.Already charted #16 by Roy Williams at KJOY inStockton, #17 for Neil McIntyre at WKTU-New York, plus #21 at KTKT and WBTT, #26 at B-96, #27 atKFMN and #28 at WMPZ and KKHR.

That's five number one A/C singles from one LPby one artist (Billy Joel). Never before... and notlikely again from any artist. The Cars are next andare only likely to feel the heat from Neil Diamond andStevie Wonder. The halting at 5,6,a 10 for HueyTina a John is probably only temporary. They're toostrong to be denied. Ain't nothin' easy for JamesIngram, but his latest, (recommended here on June29th) is about to go top ten. Barry Gibb getsCERTIFIED and debuts at #24. The other CERTIFIED,Madonna is crossing from Black, Dance and Top 40with a vengance. The Rogers, Carnes a Ingram hasthe kind of early profile which likely will see it as aneventual member of the A/C POWER TRIO, but beforethat, a CERTIFIED.

P.D. NOTEBOOK by Eric Norberg
DAYTIMERS(Reprinted by permission of Eric Norberg, ConsolidatedCommunications Consultants, 2130 Huntington Drive, Suite 209, So.Pasadena, CA 91030)
I note that the longtime Daytime Broadcasters Associationhas agreed to merge itself into the National Association ofBroadcasters (NAB). Since the DBA has a considerabledebt, and had accomplished the major recent project toattain "post -sunset authority" for daytimers, as well as apossible preference for existing daytimers over otherapplicants for new FM frequencies or a fulltime frequencyin the same town (at least the FCC is seriously talkingabout allowing that), this probably makes sense. Most ofthe daytimers' disputes over hours and power center onthe matter of the rights of the clear channel stations, andthe NAB is in a position to mediate the disputes and comeup with a mutually agreeable compromise.
However, it strikes me that many who want fulltime maynot have thought of the disadvantages! I can attest frompersonal experience that there is a real bad feelingassociated with turning off the station in the winter in themiddle of afternoon drivetime-or even before manypeople get off work. As I had suggested in this column anumber of years ago, 'Post -sunset authority" would easethat problem by permitting operation at least till 6 pm. TheFCC has permitted that, and eventually will allowbroadcasting up to two hours after sunset. They've eveneased the power restrictions for at least part of the timeafter sunset, since the last time I wrote on the subject. Itappears all Class Ill's, at least, will be allowed at least 100watts postsunset-though for many, not for the whole twohour post -sunset period. Quite an improvement over 2 and5 and 10 watts!
So what are the disadvantages of fulltime? Daytimers areless expensive to operate as a rule; they can be fullystaffed with fewer people, and they use less electricity.Daytimers are AM stations; at the moment the age groupmost inclined to be loyal to AM reportedly is 35+. People35+ generally listen to the radio in the day, and watch TVat night. Which leads us to one of the most overlookedadvantages a daytimer has-and it's in the ratings!
The rating services do not dock you in the ratings if yousign off at sunset Instead, they "adjust" your ratings toyour "actual broadcast scedule". All those zeros at nightare subtracted, and the shares, etc., just reflect the station'sefficiency during the hours when it's on the air! Since adultradio audiences go down at night, stations that run at nighthave their average daily efficiency drop by factoring thenighttime in; and as a result it's not too uncommon to seea former daytimer drop in the 6 am -12 midnight ratingswhen becoming a fulltimer.
Of course, another reason for such a drop might be alousy nighttime signal. A station with a good daytime signaladding a terrible nighttime signal tends to reduce its valueas a property, and its reputation and billing as a result. Iknow of at least one daytime AM that wound up with sucha terrible nighttime signal when it finally got fulltime that itwent back to daytime again, for some years, till it couldfind a way to put out a better nighttime signal. Somethingto consider when planning a $100,000 tower array to beable to go "NIGHTTIME"!

TORIS BETTER /RIVER/WARTJME/SWAMP/PSYCHO KILLER -TALKINGHEADS (Sire) Absolute state of the art as both a movie and a liveLP. STOP MAKING SENSE was first screened at the San FranciscoFilm Festival In front of a dancing (!), sold out frantic audience.Recorded digitally, the music is clear and crisp. Yet wait until yousee the movie! It is the ultimate "concert" --no, strike that --"music"film, directed by JONATHAN DEMME (SWING SHIFT,MELVIN ANDHOWARD). So if the movie's killer, what about the record? Put itthis way. By playing the record (which is a superb, moderatelyre -arranged live option "best of") in conjuction with, say, spon-soring a screening of the movie, you'll be aligning yourself withthe most distinguished rock n roll multi -media package ever.
HEAVEN KNOWS/TRAGEDY/FIGHT TO WIN/TURN YOUR HEARTAROUND-KEATS (EMI) Looking up from his Top Forty research,KEITH Z summed it up well --"sounds a lot like an English Toto".Fans of the old ZOMBIES and selected ALAN PARSONS trax willrecognize vocalist COLIN BLUNSTONE. From THEM and CAMEL isPETE BARDENS. Drummer STUART ELLIOT is known for his workwith AL STEWART and STEVE HARLEY. Producer ALAN PARSONSprovides a wide screen mix as the band careens between fusion -likestops and starts, with BLUNSTONE supplying tasteful and supplefrontline vocals. KEATS' approach is combination song -oriented andinstrumentally grand, with a cultured elegance that's commericial.FOREST FIRE/PERFECT SKIN -LLOYD COLE & COMMOTIONS(Polydor-U.K.) Though still pretty much a buzzz even insidehis native England, LLOYD COLE has been cutting some greatsingles produced by PAUL HARDIMAN of THE THE fame."Perfect Skin", released a few months back is well and fine, but the brand new "Forest Fire" single Is the serious destroyer.Low singing LLOYD's music isn't unlike TOM PETTY ur DWIGHTTWILLEY. It's snakey American sounding rock with sex appealand a lean style. Walk on...
SUNSET NOW -HEAVEN 17 (Arista -12") HEAVEN 17 try their handsat East Coast "beach music" (not to be confused with West Coast"surf music"). Usually to the left of HUMAN LEAGUE, HEAVEN 17now leap -frog to their right, sounding slicker than ever before.
DON'T LET IT GO TO YOUR HEAD/BURNIN' HOT/EAT YOURHEART OUT-XAVION (Asylum7Mirage) With the success of PRINCE,expect an onslaught of black performers interpreting hard rock. After all, the arena of current black music and metal/hard rock, inmany ways, share the same elements of special effects, theatrics, and costuming. XAVION ventures far closer to the herd rock stylethan any other existing black artists (remember MOTHERS FINEST?)mostly due to guitarist KEVAN WILKINS' biting edge. Should beinteresting watching Black Radio's reaction since there's nary afunk lick on the whole disc.
OUT OF TOUCH -HALL & OATES (RCA) Try and think of anyoneon a hotter hit streak than HALL & 'ATES. I can't. Everything after"How Does It Feel To Be Back" has ,iterally owned the contemporaryairwaves, no matter how short or long, no matter what tempo. "OutOf Touch" certainly isn't.
INTO THE FIRE-DOKKEN (Elektra-12") Dokken Don keeps rockin' on.1 have a feeling that this guy's gonna be a star. Maybe it's becausehe confidently uses his last name as the band name like EDDIE VANWHAT'S -HIS -NAME (who the lead player sure sounds a lot like).
NIGHTS IN CAIRO/WHAT MATTERS -DESIGN (Hib-Tone) DESIGN playa complex and well recorded braiid of percussive wave. A big indepen-dent seller in Atlanta, DESIGN grapple early -on with some sophisticatedrhythms programmed on a Linn. A band to watch, produced by JONNYHIBBERT. 404-892-7274.

ANALYSIS
Album Radio is no exception. There's PURPLE RAIN all overTHE GAVIN REPORT. If you've seen the movie (at least a coupleof times), you'll have noticed the wide spread of different kindsof viewers (and listeners) going crazy. Dig if U will, PURPLERAIN, after over eight weeks (when most flicks usually crumpleup and die), still seems to be going "BOFF 0". A thought while
"Rocket"
shavin: LOU REED and DAVID BOWIE are on the same chart forthe first time since they worked together on TRANSFORMER,during the English Glitter era. As far a LOU's LP goes, I stillfeel the best has yet to be mined. Take "New Sensations", forinstance. It has the calm coolness of "Walk On The Wild Side".Plus the lyrics are great, a love song to a motorcycle (somethingALAN WOLMARK could have written)...ls it EDDIE & THECRUISERS or JOHN CAFFERTY C BEAVER BROWN?? Top Fortydoesn't seem to have an identity crisis with this track, but AlbumRadio reports it both ways. I sort of prefer EDDIE because that'sthe name of the LP and the film and since the cable broadcstof the movie has started all this, wouldn't it be wise to capitilizeon that? Then again, JC has been doing the song for years andyears and it belongs to the band. On the chart, METROPOLISwas caught in the jungle towards the upper middle. On thestrenght of JON ANDERSON, it'll move up. KROKUS will probablyexperience erratic growth patterns like all metal does on the AlbumChart, which means It'll go up in spurts, but will probably hangon forever. Thanks to all who got In on the short week. LABORDAY is just that. You get a day off (in radio, if yOu're lucky)and you labor the rest of the week to catch up. A word ofwarning to all readers; there are lots of Interesting articlesin the can to be run in future GAVINS. Look out, you mightlearn something. Boy, I sure did writin' 'em. Next issue is ourNAB issue, which should seem a little thicker because it'll bea little thicker.lf you're attending, say hello to RON FELL andwhoever else from GAVIN that springs loose and makes it South.

ROMEO VOID finally dethrones the BANGLES in aclose, split decision. The HOODOO GURU'S continuetheir movement up one notch to the third position, nudoing PRINCE out. Last week's GAVIN CERTIFIED,LOVE TRACTOR, debuts in the POWER TRIO witha solid jump of six and the record shows excellentpotential for future movement. Most airplay on LOVETRACTOR has come from non -commerical stations whosupport it whole heartedly. Look for LOVE TRACTORto begin a national tour in about 2 weeks.
KING SUNNY ADE, another former GAVINCERTIFIED, slides into the top ten with an impress-ive week. It's great to see KING SUNNY receive thestrong exposure he deserves, and the audiencewants. This week's GAVIN CERTIFIED, THE RED HOTCHILI PEPPERS, is just that - red hot. The RHCPimproved their rank position by fifty -percent andare bursting up the chart. The R.H.C.P.'s (not tobe confused with R.C.M.P.) are almost certain tobecome members of the Alternative POWER TRIO soon.
SHREIKBACK continued to hold its ground as thestrongest import on the chart. The next few weekswill be crucial to its future.
U2, THE CHURCH, and DAVID BOWIE all scoreimpressive debuts this week. The success anddominance of U2 and BOWIE will likely come once thefull albums are released. Look for THE CHURCH tointially move quicker.
