A number of positions haven’t as yet been nominated for on the 2019/2020 Committee mainly President, Secretary and Treasurer. I urge anyone with the time and skills for running a club to nominate. It doesn’t matter if your knowledge about growing orchids in minimal, it is the procedure of running the club that counts. I would like to thank the retiring Committee Members and also those who have nominated again for their hard work and support in all that has been achieved this past year. It has been a year of achievements as we now have all our clubs assets stored in one place in a container, we have new club shirts which I hope all members will embrace, continual upgrading of our digital footprints and overwhelming support and success of our Spring Show just to name a few. Show successes have been many and I congratulate those members who have continually supported the shows or won ribbons. Awards to John & Kaye Green and Marty & Anita Vlekkert for prize winning plants have made our club proud. Well done. To the many novice members who have won with their plants at shows and meeting, your diligence and support is fantastic, open competition is awaiting you. After many years on The Club committee as Committee Member, Treasurer, Vice President and the past year President I have decided to downgrade my busy life and hopefully spend a bit more time at home with family and all my other girlfriends (as Marg calls my orchids). Wishing the Club all the best for the future. Ray McEwan President Papheopedilum Captain Cook 'Landsdale x (Via Sombrero Verde x Laura Boyd) 'Landsdale' Marty & Anita Vlekkert

Plant Of The Month

Size of orchids depends on the species. They can be tiny as a 5 cent piece or extremely large, weighingcouple of hundred kilos.

The plant of the month of September is the slipper, Paph. Captain Cook 'Landsdale'x (Via SombreroVerde x Laura Boyd) 'Landsdale'. From the rather cumbersome name you can see that it can be simplified to Paph. Captain Cook x (ViaSombrero Verde x Laura Boyd). The brackets tell you that the cross Paph.Via Sombrero Verde x LauraBoyd was first made and a plant of that cross was put with Paph. Captain Cook. As you may know bothcrosses can be registered and a new name applied for this plant. Unfortunately this hasn’t happened sowe still need to write the whole name. The plant was purchased from the Western Australian nursery Easy-Gro Orchids late 2016 for $30. Itwas sold as NFS meaning near flowering size. Either due to our incompetence or some wishful thinking ittook three years to flower. The slippers grow in a small greenhouse with 70% shade cloth with clear solar-weave added on the roofonly. The cover gives us control of the rain during the wetter parts of the year. The plants receive liquidfertiliser (1 Gram / Litre) every second watering. Slippers generally like to be re potted every year. Wereuse the mix for other plants. Slippers are easy to grow, if you have the patience, and give them the care they need.Anita and Marty

The plants are Luke Skywalker 4n seedlings (not clones). The germinated seed of the cross wastreated with a genetic mutagen to double the ploidy. The plants I have selected and have to one sideare now reaching 4 metres+, so that spike length is normal. Now I did say on the day they were something special and I don’t sell small plants. My plants stillhaven’t formed buds, but if members have plants in bud they will flower as the days get longer, havepatience. My advice, keep them fed and watered, build bigger greenhouses. You can never gowrong with a bigger greenhouse.Sam

Bush House Visit 21st SeptemberA small but very enthusiastic group enjoyed an extremely informative visit to David Hunter’s shadehouse on 21st September. David uses a great deal of science to provide the ideal growingconditions for his orchids and this is an approach sure to be taken on by those present. Thank you everyone for the contribution to morning tea and the efforts to solve global climatechange and obtain world peace.

Seed of orchids do not have endosperm which providesnutrients required for the germination.

Because of that, all orchids (including non parasitic forms) live

in symbiosis with fungi during germination.

Germination can last from couple of weeks to 15 years.
