Dear Friends,

It is with gratitude and excitement that I invite you to join me for String Theory’s second decade!

Ten years ago, String Theory was merely a dream. Ten years later, we are considered one of the premier chamber music series, and our perfor-mances are heard across the country through NPR’s Performance Today. All of you have had a part in making String Theory what it is today - thank you! Our eleventh season opens with Stravinsky’s dramatic L’Histoire du Soldat with an all-star cast of seven musicians and our own Bob Bernhardt as the narrator, taking us through this Russian folk tale.

In honor of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary, both the Ehnes Quartet and the Chien-Kim-Watkins Trio will be presenting two full programs of Beethoven, portraying the composer from an early classicist to a full-fledged master pushing all boundaries.

Two trio concerts will feature our first soprano, Hyunah Yu, with legendary clarinetist, David Shifrin, and a Bohemian program showcasing the virtuosic violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky and cellist Clive Greensmith.

Our season finale presents the world-premiere of Winter Light, a new co-commission by Patrick Castillo, as well as Korngold’s luminous quartet for two violins, cello, and piano left hand performed by my dear friends from my Music@Menlo Family.

Both our educational programs are thriving. This year, the charismatic violinist Danny Koo (a well-known media personality in Korea) will share his passion for reaching children through music in and around Chatta-nooga and Cleveland. Our String Theory Youth Internship has raised thousands of dollars for Chattanooga Food Bank and Chattanooga Room at the Inn and will continue to focus their efforts on bringing social awareness through classical music.

Thank you for embracing my dream for the past ten years. Your enthusiasm is what makes it truly special. I look forward to sharing this next decade with you!

Written for narrator and septet ensemble, L’Histoire du Soldat retells a Faustian legend in which the hero sells his soul to the Devil in exchange for the promise of wisdom and good fortune. The quirky, witty and rhythmically intricate score displays several influenc-es: Russian folk song, Romani fiddlers, klezmer music, the popular music of Spain, and the composer’s recent exposure to jazz. String Theory Outreach Initiative For Elementary Schools

Danny Koo • violinJanuary 22-26 - Chattanooga & Cleveland, TN

In the past four years, String Theory has brought award-winning musi-cians and ensembles to present educational outreach programs in our communities. We have reached over 6,000 students, many of whom live in communities with little access to the arts and are experiencing live classical music for the first time.

Described as “unstinting in energetic projection every step of the way” (Calgary Herald), we are excited to welcome the charismatic young Korean-American violinist Danny Koo for this season’s outreach residen-cy. Danny is a well-known media personality in Korea with a passion for reaching children through his music. He will be presenting a program focusing on the relationship between voice and the violin. This presen-tation will include classical repertoire by composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Benjamin Britten, and Astor Piazzolla. Danny believes “that with the violin and voice, violin may be difficult to understand, but everyone sings.” This philosophy will provide an enriching and exciting learning experience for the young people in our community! Stay tuned for more information regarding performance schedules.
