After this long, scorching summer, I am looking forward to nothingmore than returning to Oxford'smuch-loved venues - both old andnew - in order to bring you afabulously wide-ranging season of concerts, talks, and“concert-theatre”. Ranging from the music of the middle ages rightthrough the centuries to a stringquartet by that consummateexponent of the form, DimitiShostakovich, and guitar works fromthe 20th and 21st centuries, Music atOxford is committed to offering you,our loyal audience, the very bestmusic from the entirety of the canon.

I am especially excited to say thatfollowing your wish for us toprogramme more opera, we haveanother concert performance fromcritically acclaimed English TouringOpera: Handel's Radamisto. We alsohave the Academy of Ancient Musicas our Ensemble-in-Residence forthe season, performing twoconcerts for us in the Town Hall -one directed by the indefatigableclarinettist Michael Collins andincluding Mozart's much-lovedclarinet concerto; the other directedby Nigel Short in which theensemble pairs with Tenebrae toperform Bach's B minor Mass.

We see welcome returns to Musicat Oxford from Joanna MacGregor,Craig Ogden and the Villiers Quartet;don't miss the latter's debutperformance in the beautiful newMathematical Institute in northOxford.

The concert we had to postponedue to the snow last March is nowrescheduled and enhanced as apart of Merton College'sPassiontide Festival; The Cardinall'sMusick will be joined by Merton'schoir for a performance of Tallis'Spem in Alium. Finally, I amdelighted to announce that ourseason finale will be given by theOxford Bach Choir and Florilegium, directed by Benjamin Nicholas, in aperformance of Handel's Athalia tomark the 350th anniversary of theSheldonian Theatre.

Many of you will have read aboutthe cuts being made to musicprovision and county music servicesacross the country, which meansthat organisations such as Music atOxford are absolutely essential toany young person wishing to learnabout classical music and hear itplayed live.

All of us at Music at Oxford remainhugely grateful to those of you whodonate so generously to our charity;it is this subsidy which enables us tokeep our pricing structures keenand to continue to offer thosecrucial discounts to under 18s,students, and people with limitedmobility or limited means.

If you are able tobecome a friend or patron of Musicat Oxford, please do, because everydonation really does count.Similarly, if you are already one ofour generous donors but able togive a little more, you can find fulldetails of our schemes on page 3opposite.

Radamisto was one of Handel’s mostappreciated operas, not least for its famousaria Ombra cara, which stunned audiences andwas sung in drawing rooms for decadesthereafter. It tells a dramatic story of a royalfamily in old Armenia, locked in mortal conflict.Thematically, it champions faithfulness andmarried love, but it also has a fine gallery ofmoral depravity and intolerance. One forcollectors, as well as being a moving andaccessible piece of music theatre for anyonewanting to try opera.

Borodin’s1881 quartet, dedicated to the composer’s wife, isfamed for its soulful Notturno. Shostakovich wrote op. 73 following the censure of his 9th Symphony by the Soviet authorities; expressing high drama andcompositional mastery, this work aptly demonstrateswhy the composer is considered one of the greatestquartet writers of the 20th century.

Joanna MacGregor’s eagerly awaited return to Music atOxford is an offering of Romantic masterpieces from theAustro-Germanic tradition. Schubert was extremelyprolific during a very short lifetime, and his music muchchampioned by Liszt thereafter. His Four Impromptus –so named by his publisher – each display the lyricalmelodies for which he is revered, while his B flat sonatais now a core work of the piano repertoire.

Liszt’s transcription of Isolde’s climactic final aria fromWagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde – as she sings overTristan’s dead body – became well-known throughoutEurope long before the opera itself.

The Sheldonian Theatre was opened in 1669, 350 yearsago, and the OBC celebrates this anniversary with oneof the greatest pieces premiered there, Handel’soratorio Athalia. Not only is this the only oratorioconducted by Handel in Oxford, but the Sheldonian isalmost certainly the only surviving building where weknow he performed any of his oratorios. Athalia itselftells the dramatic tale of the downfall of the evilusurper Athalia, queen of Judah, daughter of Jezebeland worshipper of Baal, with appropriately colourfuland exciting music for soloists and chorus alike.
