The compressorhead anddischarge tube(s)get hotwhen the air compressor is running. If you touchthem, youcan be seriouslyburned.

It is normal for the motorandpressure switch to sparkwhen the compressor starts or stops. A spark canignite flammable vapors from gasoline or solventscausing a fire or explosion.

The solvents 1,1,1 -Trichloroethane and MethyleneChloride can chemically reactwith aluminum used inpaint spray guns, paint pumps,etc., and cause anexplosion. These solvents can also react with galva-nized components and causecorrosion andweaken-ing of parts. This does not affect your air compressor,but it may affect the equipment being used.

Compressed air can propel dust, dirt or loose par-ticles it comes in contact with. These propelled par-ticles may cause serious injury or damage.

Toomuch air pressure appliedto airtoolsoraccesso-riescan cause damageor riskof bursting.

HOW TO PREVENT IT

Never touch the aircompressorhead ortubesduringor immediatleyafter operation.

Alwaysoperatethe air compressorin wellventilatedareas; free of gasolineor solventvapors.

Do not operatethe compressornear the sprayarea.

If spraying a flammable material, provide ample ven-tilation. Never spray in a closed area. There must bea flow of fresh air at all times.

If the material you intend to spray contains the sol-vents listed at left (read the label or data sheet), do notuse accessories that contain aluminum or galvanizedparts. You must either change the material you intendto spray,or use only stainless steel spray equipment.

Never point any nozzle orsprayertoward a person orany part of the body.Always wear safety goggles or glasses when usingtheair compressor.Always turn the air compressor off before attaching orremoving accessories.

Check the manufacturer's pressure rating for air toolsand accessories. The input pressure to a tool oraccessory must never exceed the manufacturer'srating. A pressure regulator must be installedbeforeusing accessories rated less than 125 PSI.

Your air compressor is powered by electricity. Likeany other electrically powered device, if it is not usedproperly it may cause electrical shock.

This compressorcyclesautomatically when the pres-sureswitchisinthe ON/AUTO position.Ifyouattemptrepairormaintenancewhilethecompressorisoperat-ing,or withthe switchinthe ON/AUTO position,youcan expose yourself to moving parts. These movingparts can cause serious injury or damage ifthey comeinto contact with you or your clothing.

HOW TO PREVENTIT

Wiring of the pressure switch, motor and ON/OFFswitch should be done by a licensed electrician inaccordancewithnationaland local codes.

Always unplug the air compressor prior to mainte-nance or repair.

Never use the air compressoroutdoors when it israining.

Always plug the cord intoan electrical outletwiththespecified voltage and adequate fuse protection.

Never operate the compressorwith the belt guardremoved.

Always unplugthe unit and release air pressure fromthe tank and any accessories before doing repair ormaintenance.

Never directly inhalethe compressedair produced bythis unit.

Read labels and safety data for all materials youspray. Follow all safety precautions.

Usea mask or respirator if there is achance of inhalingtoxic sprayed materials. Masks and respirators havelimits and will only provide protection against somekinds and limited amounts of toxic material. Readmask and respirator instructions carefully. Consultwith asafety expert or industrial hygienist ifyou arenotsure about the use of a certain mask or respirator.

Do not adjust, remove or tamperwiththe safetyvalveor pressure switch. If safety valve or pressure switchreplacement is necessary, a part with the same pres-sure rating must be used.

For servicereplacementuseonlythe motors,pulleysand belts designed as standard service replacementparts as indicated in parts list. Use of improper partscould cause overloading of your unit and electricalsupply.

Do not substitutea gas engine for the motor...thecompressor was not designed to be powered by agasoline engine.

Never replacethe compressorpump with a differentmodel. Never increase the compressorpump speed.

Neverdrillinto,weldorinanyway modifythe air tank.Do notrepaira leakingtank; it mustbe replaced.

Use only afuse or circuit breaker thatisthe same rating as the branch ci rcu itthe air compres-sor is operated on. If the compressor is connected to acircuit protected by fuses, use dual element time delayfuses, as noted in that service bulletin.

Refer to Outfit Parts Bulletin for your com-pressor. Certain air compressor modelscan be operated on a 15 amp circuit if:

If any of the above conditions cannot bemet, or if operation of the compressor re-peatedly causes interruption of the power,it may be necessary to operate it from a 20amp circuit.

Some models have a dual voltage motor, 120 and 240volt. They are wired for 120 volt but can be convertedto 240 volt operation. Instructions for connecting thesemotors for operation at 240 volt can be found printed onthe inside of the motor covers or on the nameplate ofthese motors.

1. Voltage supply to circuit is normal.2.Circuit is not used to supply any other

electrical needs (lights, appliances, etc.)3. Extension cords comply with specifica-

tions in this manual.

4.Circuit is equipped with 15 amp circuitbreaker or 15 amp dual element time de-lay fuse. Use a Fusetron Type "T" timedelay fuse.

Certain air compressor models can be con-verted to 240 volts from 120 volt operation.When converting a specific model to 240volt operation, the attached three-prong 120volt plug must be replaced with the three-prong 240 volt plug (purchase locally) ororder line cord Part No. SUDL-404-1.

ICFM: Cubic feet per minute.

SCFM: Standard cubic feet per minute; a unit ofmeasure of air delivery.

PSIG: Pounds per square inch gauge; a unit ofmeasure of pressure.

ASME: American Society of Mechanical Engineers;made, tested, inspected and registered to meet thestandards of the ASME.

U.L. Listed: Underwriter Laboratories; Samples ofcompressor outfits, taken from production, were sub-mitted to U.L. and found to comply with their require-ments for design and performance.

Cut-In Pressure: While the motor is off, air tankpressu redrops as you continue to use your accessory.When the tank pressure drops to a certain low levelthemotor will restart automatically. The low pressure atwhich the motor automatically re-starts is called "cut-inpressure."

Cut-Out Pressure: When you turn on your air com-pressor and it begins to run, air pressure in the air tankbegins to build. It builds to a certain high pressurebefore the motor automatically shuts off - protectingyour air tank from pressure higher than its capacity.The highpressure atwhich the motor shutsoff iscalled"cut-out pressure."

iYou have purchased an air compressor unit consistingof a 2 cylinder, single-stage air compressor pump, anair tank, air hose, wheels, handle, associated controlsand instruments. You may also find an air chuck.

Your air compressor can be used for operating paintspray guns, air tools, caulking guns, grease guns, airbrushes, sandblasters, inflating tires and plastic toys,spraying weed killers, insecticides, etc. An air pressureregulator is recommended for most of these applica-tions.

Separate air transformers which combine the functionsof air regulation and/or moisture and dirt removalshould be used where applicable.

These accessories can be purchased from most Searsstores or from the Sears General or Power Tool

Catalog.

An air line filter is usually required for removal ofmoisture and oil vapor in compressed air when a paintspray gun is used.

i ON-RECE PTINSPECT ON IEach air compressor outfit is carefully checked beforeshipment. With improper handling, damage may resultin transit and cause problems in compressor opera-tion, a bent crankshaft, etc.

Immediately upon arrival, check equipment for bothconcealed and visible damages to avoid expensesbeing incurred to correct such problems. This shouldbe done regardless of any visible signs of damage tothe shipping container. Report any damages to carrierand arrange for inspection of goods immediately.

Drain Valve: At the base of the air tank to drain con-densation at the end of each use.

Shut-off Valve: Turn the knob counterclockwise toopen the valve and clockwise to close.

Motor Thermal Overload Protector: The electric

motor has an automatic thermal overload protector. Ifthe motor overheats for any reason, the thermal over-load protector will shut off the motor. The motor mustbe allowed to cool down before restarting.

Safety Valve: If the pressure switch does not shut offthe air compressor at its cut-out pressure setting,thesafety valve will protect against high pressure by"popping out" at itsfactory set pressure (slightlyhigherthan the pressure switch cut-out setting).

ON/AUTO - OFF Switch: Turn this switch ON to

provide automatic power to the pressure switch andOFF to remove power.

Air Intake Filter: This filter is designed to clean aircoming intothe pump. This filter must always be cleanand ventilation openings free from obstructions. See"Maintenance".

Air Compressor Pump: To compress air, the pistonmoves up and down in the cylinder. On the down-stroke, air is drawn inthrough the air intake valves. Theexhaust valve remains closed. On the upstroke of thepiston, air is compressed. The intake valves close andcompressed air is forced out through the exhaustvalve, through the outlet tube, throughthe check valveand into the air tank. Working air is not available untilthe compressor has raised the air tank pressure abovethat required at the air outlet.

Check Valve: When the air compressor is operating,the check valve is "open", allowing compressed air toenter the air tank. When the air compressor reaches"cut-out" pressure, the check valve "closes", allowingair pressure to remain inside the air tank.

Pressure Release Valve: The pressure release valvelocated on the side of the pressure switch, isdesignedto automatically release compressed air from the com-pressor head and the outlettube when the aircompres-sor reaches "cut-out" pressure or is shut off. If the airis not released, the motor will try to start, but will beunableto. The pressure release valve allowsthe motorto restart freely. When the motor stops running, air willbe heard escaping from the valve for a few seconds.No air should be heard leaking when the motor isrunning.

Pressure Switch: The pressure switch automaticallystarts the motor when the air tank pressure dropsbelow the factory set "cut-in" pressure. It stops themotor when the air tank pressure reaches the factoryset "cut-out" pressure.

Regulator: The air pressure coming from the air tankis controlled by the regulator knob. Turn the knobclockwise to increase pressure and counter-clockwiseto decrease pressure. To avoid minor readjustmentafter making a change in pressure setting, alwaysapproach the desired pressure from a lower pressure.When reducing from a higher to a lower setting, firstreduce to some pressure less than that desired, thenbring up to the desired pressure. Depending onthe airrequirements of each particular accessory, the outletregulated air pressure may have to be adjusted whileoperating the accessory.

Outlet Pressure Gauge: The outlet pressure gaugeindicatesthe airpressure available at the outlet sideofthe regulator. This pressure is controlled by theregulator and is always less or equal to the tankpressure. See "Operating Procedures".

Tank Pressure Gauge: The tank pressure gauge in-dicates the reserve air pressure in the tank. On outfitswith no pressure regulator, this is also the pressureavailable at the air outlet.

Regulator: The air pressure coming from the air tankis controlled by the regulator knob. Turn the knobclockwise to increase pressure and counterclockwiseto decrease pressure. , a 7/16" open-end wrench for attaching the foot ex-tension bracket and air pressure gauge

. a 1/4" open-end wrench to tighten handle set screw, an adjustable wrench for attaching the shut-off valve,air

outlet adapter and pressure regulator.

Installing Handle

THE WHEELS AND HANDLE DO NOT PRO-VIDE ADEQUATE CLEARANCE, STABIL-ITY OR SUPPORT FOR PULLING THE UNITUP AND DOWN STAIRS OR STEPS. THEUNIT MUST BE LIFTED OR PUSHED UP ARAMP. DO NOT LIFT THE UNIT BY THEMANIFOLD ASSEMBLY. THE UNIT CANBE DAMAGED.

1. Insert the open end of the handle under the saddle(Fig. 1). Before attaching handle, you may have topull the open ends of the handle apart so they fittightly against the side of the saddle. Looking in fromthe open end of the saddle, position the handletoward the two bent tabs, on the inside walls of thesaddle. Slowlypushtheopen ends of the handle ontoboth tabs atthe sametime (Fig. 2). Continue pushingthe handle into the saddle until the holes on the sideof the saddle and handle are in line.

2. Guide the straight end of each retaining clip throughthe saddle hole and both handle holes (Fig. 3).

3. Rotate each retaining clip clockwise and press downuntil it snaps into place over the pull handle (Fig. 4).

4. If the handle has excessive movement, it is improp-erly installed. Check the following.

A. Are both tabs inside the handle (Step #1)?B. Does each clip pass through both the saddle

and handle (Step #2)?

It may be necessary to brace or supportone end of the outfit when attaching thewheels because the air compressor willhave a tendency to tip.

Installing Shut-off Valve

(outfits without regulators)

Installing Rubber Foot Stripand Wheels

1. Remove the protective paper strip from the adhe-sive-backed rubber foot strip. Attach the rubber footstrip to the bottom of the air tank leg. Press firmly intoplace.

2.The leg bracket on the underside of the air compres-sor tank has 2 holes on each side for mounting thewheels. Place one shoulder bolt through the hole ina wheel. On Model No. (919.17695), push the boltthrough the TOP hole of the leg bracket. For all otherModels, push the bolt through the BOTTOM hole ofthe leg bracket. Screw on one hex locking nut. Thespecial locking nut does not turn freely. Tighten thenut firmly until it contacts the tank leg. The outfit willsit level if the wheels are properly installed.

Installing Tank Pressure Gauge

Applypipe sealant (not supplied) to the gauge threadsand install in the threaded opening in front of themanifold.

Installing Regulator(for outfits supplied with regulators)

Apply a small amount of pipe sealant to the taperedpipe threads on the adapter and tighten into the mani-fold. Install the swivel connection end of the shut-off

valve to the straight threaded end of the adapter (pipesealant is not required) and tighten this connection.

NOTE

Use a small amount of pipe thread sealant (notsupplied) on all pipe thread joints. Install theregulator on the end of the manifold using theshort pipe nipple. The arrow on the bottom ofthe regulator must point away from the mani-fold inorder for the regulator to function prop-erly. Next, install the gauge, adapter and plugin the regulator. The plug is supplied with theregulator.

Location of the Air CompressorOperate the air compressor in a clean, dry and wellventilated area. The air intake filter must be kept clearof obstructions that could interfere with the flow of airthrough the fan bladed flywheel. The air compressorcrankcase and head are designed with fins to provideproper cooling.

if humidity is high, a Sears air filter can be installed onthe air outlet adapter to remove excessive moisture.Closely follow the instructions packaged with the filterfor proper installation. It must be installed as close aspossible to the accessory.

Do not place the air compressor where heat is exces-sive.

Extension Cords

To avoid voltage dropand power loss to the motor,useextra air hose instead of an extension cord.

If an extension cord must be used:use only a 3-wire extension cord that has a 3-bladegrounding plug and a 3-slot receptacle that willaccept the plug on the product.make sure the extension cord is in good condition.the extension cord should be no longer than 50 feet.the minimum wire size is 12 gauge (AWG). (Wiresize increases as gauge number decreases. 10AWG and 8 AWG may also be used. DO NOT USE14 AWG or 16 AWG.)

Voltage and Circuit ProtectionRefer to your Outfit Parts Bulletin for voltage and circuitprotection requirements of your compressor. Use onlya fuse or circuit breaker that is the same rating as thebranch circuit the air compressor is operated on. If thecompressor is connected to a circuit protected byfuses, use only dual element time delay fuses, as notedin that Service Bulletin.

Lubrication and Oil

Certain air compressor models can be con-nected to 240 volts from 120 volt operation.When converting a specific model to 240volt operation, the attached three-prong 120volt plug must be replaced with the three-prong 240 volt plug (purchase locally) ororder line cord Part No. SUDL-404-1.

Refer to the Outfit Parts Bulletin for yourcompressor. Certain air compressor mod-els can be operated on a 15 amp circuit if:1.Voltage supply to circuit is normal.2. Circuit is not used to supply any other

electrical needs (lights, appliances, etc.)3.Extension cords comply with specifica-

tions in this manual.4.Circuit is equipped with a 15 amp circuit

breaker or 15 amp time delay fuse.

Some models have a dual voltage motor, 120 and 240volt. They are wired for 120 volt but can be convertedto 240 volt operation. Instructions for connecting thesemotors for operation at 240 volt can be found printed onthe inside of the motor covers, or on the nameplate ofthese motors•

Compressors are shipped without oil. Donot attempt to operate this air compressorwithout first adding oil to the crankcase.Serious damage can result from even lim-ited operation unless filled with oil andbroken in correctly. Make sure to closelyfollow initial start-up procedures.

Place unit on a level surface. Remove oil fill plug andslowly add a special compressor oil such as Sears 9-16426 or SAE 20-20W SF motor oil until it is even withthe top of the oil fill hole. (It must not be allowed to belower than 3/8" -- 6 threads down -- from the top at anytime.) When filling the crankcase, the oil flows veryslowly. If the oil is added too quickly, it will overflow andappear to be full. Crankcase oil capacity is 16 fluidounces. Under winter-type conditions use SAE 10W oil.Multi-viscosity oil, 10W 30, will leave carbon depositson critical components, reducing performance andcompressor life. Replace oil fill plug.

NOTE

Drain and refill the compressor pump crank-case after the first 100 hours of operation.

Grounding InstructionsIf these grounding instructions are not completelyunderstood, or if you are not sure your compressor isproperly grounded, have the installation checked by aqualified electrician.

IMPROPER GROUNDING CAN RESULT INELECTRICAL SHOCK. IN TH EEVENT OF ASHORT CIRCUIT, GROUNDING REDUCESTHE RISK OF SHOCK BY PROVIDING ANESCAPE WIRE FOR THE ELECTRIC CUR-RENT. THIS AIR COMPRESSOR MUST BEPROPERLY GROUNDED.

1. The air compressor is equipped with a cord having agrounding wire and an appropriate grounding plug.The plug must be used with an outlet that has beeninstalled and grounded in accordance with all localcodes and ordinances. The outlet must have thesame configuration as the plug. DO NOT USE ANADAPTER.

2.Do not modify the plug that has been provided. If itdoes not fit the available outlet, the correct outletshould be installed by a qualified electrician.

Piping

Plastic or PVC pipe is not designed for usewith compressed air. Regardless of its in-dicated pressure rating, plastic pipe canburst from air pressure. Use only metalpipe for air distribution lines.

ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD. WHEN RE-PAIRING OR REPLACING THE CORD ORPLUG, KEEP THE GROUNDING WIRESEPARATE FROM THE CURRENT-CAR-RYING WIRES. NEVER CONNECT THEGROUNDING WIRE TO A FLAT BLADE

PLUG TERMINAL (THE GROUNDING WIREHAS INSULATION WITH AN OUTERSURFACE THAT IS GREEN - WITH ORWITHOUT YELLOW STRIPES.)

If apipe line is necessary, use pipe that is the same sizeas the air tank outlet. Piping that is too small will restrictthe flow of air. If piping is over 100 feet long, use thenext larger size. Bury underground lines belowthe frostline and avoid pockets where condensation can gatherand freeze. Apply pressure before underground linesare covered to make sure all pipe joints are free ofleaks.

Connect the piping to the 3/8" NPT air outlet openingat the end of the air tank.

Additional Regulators and ControlsSince the air tank pressure is usually greater than thatwhich is needed, a separate regulator is usually em-ployed to control the air pressure ahead of any individ-ual air driven device.

Separate air transformers which combine the functionof air regulation, moisture and dirt removal should beused where applicable.

Break-in Procedures

Serious damage may result if the followingbreak-in instructions are not closely fol-lowed.

This procedure is required only once, before the aircompressor is put into service.

1. Set the pressure switch lever to the "OFF" position.2. Plug the power cord into the correct branch circuit

receptacle.3. Turn the regulator clockwise (or open the shut-off

valve), opening it fully, to prevent air pressure build-up in the tank.

4. Move the pressure switch lever to "ON/AUTO". Thecompressor will start.

5. Run the compressor for 30 minutes. Make sure theregulator, or shut-off valve, is open and there is notank pressure build-up.

6. After 30 minutes, close the regulator by turning itcounterclockwise or close the shut-off valve by turn-ing the knob clockwise. The air receiver will fill to cut-out pressure and the motor will stop. The compres-sor is now ready for use.

OPERATING PROCEDURES ................................................!

Daily Start-Up Checklist

Perform the following checks before starting the com-pressor outfit.

1. Make sure that nothing is blocking the belt guard airopenings or air filter opening.

2. Pull the ring on all safety valves to make sure thevalves move freely and smoothly.

3. Check the oil level; add oil if necessary.4. Clean or blow off fins or any part of compressor that

collects dust and dirt. Compressor will run coolerand provide longer service.

Start the compressor outfit and check the following:1. With the outlet valve closed, start the compressor

outfit. Allow the outfit to pump up to cut-off pres-sure.

2. Make sure that all controls are operating correctly.Refer to "Description of Operation" section of thismanual.

3. Check all line fittings and piping for air leaks. Evenminor leaks can cause the compressor to over-work, resulting in prematu re breakdown or unsatis-factory performance.

4. Check for excessive vibration and noise.5. Check for oil leaks. Correct any leaks found.

Compressed air from the outfit may con-tain water condensation and oil mist. Donot spray unfiltered air at an item thatcould be damaged. Some air operated toolsor devices may require filtered air. Readinstructions for the air tool or device.

6. Open shutoff valve. Your outfit is ready for use.

When You Are Finished:

7. Set the pressure switch lever to "OFF".8. Close the shutoff valve.

9. Remove the air tool or accessory.10. Open the shutoff valve and allow the air to slowly

bleed from the tank. Close shutoff valve when tankpressure is approximately 20 PSI.

Normal Operation

1. Before attaching an air hose or accessory, makesure the pressure switch lever is in the "OFF"position. Close the shut-off valve by turning theknob clockwise, or close air regulator outlet byturning it counterclockwise.

2. Attach hose and accessory.

TOO MUCH AIR PRESSURE CAUSES AHAZARDOUS RISK OF BURSTING. CHECKTHE MANUFACTURER'S MAXIMUM PRES-SURE RATING FOR AIR TOOLS AND AC-CESSORIES. THE REGULATOR OUTLETPRESSURE MUST NEVER EXCEED THEMAXIMUM PRESSURE RATING. ON MOD-ELS HAVING ONLY A SHUT-OFF VALVE,YOU MUST INSTALL A REGULATORBEFORE USING ACCESSORIES RATEDAT LESS THAN 125 PSIG.

WATER WILL CONDENSE IN THE AIR TANK.IF NOT DRAINED, WATER WILL CORRODEAND WEAKEN AIR TANK, CAUSING A RISKOF AIR TANK RUPTURE.

4. With tank pressure at approximately 20 PSI, openthe drain cock and allow moisture to drain.

NOTEIf the drain cock valve isplugged, release all airpressure. The valve can then be removed,cleaned and reinstalled.

5. After the water has been drained, close the draincock. The air compressor can now be stored.

3. Turn the pressure switch lever to the "ON-AUTO"position and allow tank pressure to build. The motorwill stop when tank pressure reaches cut-out pres-sure.

To ensure efficient operation and longer life of the air compressor outfit, a routine maintenance schedule should beprepared and followed. The following routine maintenance schedule is geared to an outfit in a normal workingenvironment operating on a daily basis. If necessary, the schedule should be modified to suit the conditions underwhich your compressor is used. The modifications will depend upon the hours of operation and the workingenvironment. Compressor outfits in an extremely dirty and/or hostile environment will require a greater frequency ofall maintenance checks. Lubricate compressor motor according to manufacturer's instructions,which are attached toyour motor.

Routine Maintenance Schedule

Every 8 Hours of Operation1. Check oil level. Add if necessary.2. Drain water from the air tank, any moisture sepa-

rators or transformers.3. Check for any unusual noise and/or vibration.4. Manually check all safety valves to make sure they

are operating properly.5. Inspect for oil leaks and repair any leaks found.

Every 160 Hours of Operation1. Check drive belt tension;adjust if necessary. (Refer

to SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS in this manual.)2. Inspect air lines and fittings for leaks; correct as

necessary.3. Check the alignment of the motor pulley to the fly-

wheel. If necessary, align to within 1/32 inch oncenterline.

Every 40 Hours of Operation1. Clean and inspect the air intake filter; replace if

necesssary.2. Inspect condition of drive belt; replace if neces-

sary.

Each Year of Operationor if a Problem is SuspectedCheck condition of air compressor pump intake andexhaust valves. Replace if damaged or worn out.

Every 100 Hours of Operation1. Drain and refill compressor crankcase with16 fluid

Air Filter - Inspection andReplacement

Check Valve - Inspection andReplacement

NOTE

Keep the air filter clean at all times. Do notoperate the compressor with the air filter re-moved.

A dirty air filter will not allow the compressor to operateat full capacity. Before you use the compressor, checkthe air filter to be sure it is clean.

If it is dirty, replace it with a new filter. On some models,the filter may be removed by using a pair of needlenosed pliers or a screwdriver. Pull or pry out the oldfilter. Push in the new air filter. Other models requireremoval of the belt guard and/or filter retainer.

Remove and inspect the check valve at least once ayear or more often if the compressor is heavily used.Moisture and other contaminants in the hot com-pressed air will cause an accumulation of a carbon-likeresidue on the working parts. If the valve has heavycarbon build-up, it should be replaced. Use the follow-ing procedure to inspect, clean or replace the checkvalve.

1. Unplug compressor. Release air pressure from theair tank.

2. Loosen the top and bottom tube nuts and removethe outlet tube.

3. Unscrew the check valve (turn counterclockwise)using socket wrench (7/8").

4. Check that the valve disc moves freely and that thespring holds the disc in the upper, closed position.The check valve may be cleaned with a solvent.

5. Apply sealant to the check valve threads. Reinstallthe check valve (turn clockwise). Do not over-tighten.

6. Replace the outlet tube and tighten top and bottomtube nuts.

Oil- Checking and ChangingSafety Valve- Inspection andReplacement

Overfilling with oil will cause prematurecompressor failure. Do not overfill.

Check oil level in the crankcase daily. Remove the oilfill plug. The oil level should be even with the top of thefill hole and must not be allowed to be lower than 3/8"from the top (6 threads) at any time. It is recommendedthat the oil be changed after every 100 hours ofoperation. To drain the oil, removethe oildrain plug andcollect the oil in a suitable container. Be sure to replacethe plug securely before adding new oil. Use a specialcompressor oil such as Sears 9-16426 orSAE 20-20WSF motor oil. [Crankcase oil capacity is 16 fluid ounces(473.2 ml).] Under winter-type conditions use SAE10W.

IF THE SAFETY VALVE DOES NOT WORKPROPERLY, OVER-PRESSURIZATION MAYOCCUR, CAUSING AIR TANK RUPTUREOR EXPLOSION. OCCASIONALLY PULLTHE RING ON THE SAFETY VALVE TOMAKE SURE THAT THE SAFETY VALVEOPERATES FREELY. IF THE VALVE ISSTUCK OR DOES NOT OPERATE

SMOOTHLY, IT MUST BE REPLACED WITHA VALVE HAVING THE SAME PRESSURERATING.

Belt- Replacement

SERIOUS INJURY OR DAMAGE MAYOCCUR IF PARTS OF THE BODY OR LOOSEITEMS GET CAUGHT IN MOVING PARTS.NEVER OPERATE THE OUTFIT WITH THEBELT GUARD REMOVED. THE BELTGUARD SHOULD BE REMOVED ONLYWHEN THE COMPRESSOR IS UN-PLUGGED.

3. Remove belt and replace.

NOTE

The belt must be centered over the grooveson the flywheel and motor pulley.

4. Replace the front of the belt guard.

Adjust Belt Tension

Adjust belt tension by tightening the wing nut until itmakes contact with the washer, plus one additionalturn.

Belt Guard - Removal and Installation

(Refer to Outfit Parts Bulletin, if required.)

1. Move the "ON/AUTO-OFF" lever to the "OFF" po-sition. Unplug the compressor. Release all air tankpressu re.

2. Disconnect the motor cord from the motor. Pull the

cord out, from beneath the saddle, toward the pres-sure switch.

3. Disconnect the pressure release tube from thepressure switch. Place a wrench on the releasevalve to prevent it from rotating. Place anotherwrench on tube nut and unscrew and remove.

4. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, push down on topof the manifold tube fitting adapter while pulling upon the tube. This will disconnect the manifold tubefrom the tank fitting.

5. Remove the two beltguard screws on the bottomfront of the outfit.

6. If so equipped, remove inside guard from saddle.

Pressure Switch - Replacement

PRESSURE LOADS BEYOND DESIGN LIM-ITS MAY CAUSE TANK RUPTURE OR EX-PLOSION. PRESSURE SWITCH OPERA-TION IS RELATED TO MOTOR HP, TANKRATING AND SAFETY VALVE SETrlNG.DO NOT A'n'EMPT TO ADJUST, REMOVEOR DEFEAT THE PRESSURE SWITCH, ORCHANGE AND MODIFY ANY PRESSURECONTROL RELATED DEVICE. IF REPLACE-MENT IS NECESSARY, THE SAME RATEDSWITCH MUST BE USED.

Replace Belt

1. Unplug compressor.2. Remove the front of the belt guard by disengaging

the snaps. Insert a flat bladed screwdriver at eachsnap location and pry the beltguard apart.

NOTE

Forcompressors witha motor hold down plate,loosenthe wing nutat the holddown plate. Themotorcan be tilted to allow for easy removal orinstallation of the belt.

For compressors with a motor tension spring,lift motor until belt can be removed or installed.

Motor Overload Protector - Reset

The motor has a manual thermal overload protector. Ifthe motor overheats for any reason, the overloadprotector will shut off the motor. The motor must beallowed to cool down before restarting. Turn the unitoff. To restart, depress the red reset button located onthe end of the motor and turn ON/AUTO-OFF switch tothe ON position.

NOTE

If the overload protector shuts the motor offfrequently, check for a possible voltage prob-lem. Low voltage can also be suspected when:

1. The motor does not get up to full power orspeed.

2. Fuses blow out when the motor is started.

3. Lights dim when motor is started, andremain dim while it is running.

Air Compressor Pump -ReplacementDisassembly, or service, of the air compressor pumpbeyond what is covered in this manual is not recom-mended. If additional service is required, contact theservice center of your local Sears store. Refer to the"Air Compressor Pump Parts List" for your pump foradditional information. Removal of the air compressorpump is as follows:

1. Lock out the power supply and relieve all airpressure from the air tank.

2. Remove the belt guard as noted in "Belt Guard -Removal and Installation" in this manual. If so

equipped, remove inside guard from saddle.3. Remove the drive belt, as noted in "Belt - Replace-

ment" in this manual.4. Disconnect all air lines from the compressor.

NOTERemove the belt guard bracket, if equipped,for installation on new compressor outfit.

Motor Lubrication

Lubricate motor according to manufacturer's instruc-tions, which are attached to your motor.

Motor- Replacement1. Unplug compressor and relieve all air pressure

from the tank.

2. Remove the belt guard.3. Remove drive belt.

4. Loosen the motor pulley set screw and remove thepulley.

5. Remove the motor cover plate and disconnect theleads from the power cord.

6. Disconnect the motor mounting plate from thesaddle and remove the motor. Replace with a newmotor and reinstall on the saddle.

7. Connect the power cord leads to the motor follow-ing the diagram on the cover plate.

8. Install the motor pulley and align it to the flywheelwithin 1/32 inch on centerline.

1/4" set screws - 70-80 in-lbs.5/16" set screws - 160-170 in-lbs.3/8" set screws - 285-295 in-lbs.

9. Reinstall the drive belt. Make sure the belt is

centered in the motor pulley and flywheel.10. Adjust the belt tension as described in "Belt - Re-

placement" procedure in this manual.

5. Remove compressor mounting bolts and removethe compressor. Replace with a new compressor.

6. Remove old flywheel and inspect for damage. Re-place flywheel if required. Install flywheeland torqueflywheel cap screw to 20 to 25 foot pounds.

7. Install mounting screws, securing new compressorto the saddle. Torque 5/16 inch mounting screws to10 to 12 foot pounds.

8. Check the alignment of the flywheel to the motorpulley. The motor pulley must align to the flywheelwithin 1/32 inch on centerline. Adjust as necessary.

9. Install drive belt. Make sure the belt is centered onthe motor pulley and flywheel grooves.

10. Connect all air lines to the compressor pump.11. To install the belt guard bracket, remove the nut

from the stud on the compressor pump. Assemblethe guard bracket and torque nut to 20 to 25 footpounds.

12. Adjust the belt tension as noted in "Belt - Replace-ment" in this manual.

Air compressor pumps are shipped with-out oil. Do not attempt to operate thecompressor for any reason without firstadding oil to the compressor pump crank-case. Serious damage can result from evenvery limited use under these circumstances,

13. Remove oil fill plug. Slowly add 16 fluid ounces ofspecial compressor oil, Sears 9-16426 or SAE 20-20W SF motor oil. (Under winter-type conditionsuse single weight SAE 10W oil.) Reinstall oil fillplug. Refer to "Initial Start-Up Procedures" in thismanual. These instructions must be followed toproperly break in the new pump.

14. Turn the fused disconnect or circuit breaker to theON position.

15. Perform the "Break-in Procedures" as described inthis manual.

Separate Regulator or Shut-OffValve - ReplacementFor replacement of separate regulator or shut-offvalve, remove component. Apply sealant to valve orregulator threads. Reinstall component by turningclockwise. Do not overtighten.

Pulley and Flywheel - Alignment

The compressor flywheel and motor pulley groovesmust be in-line (in the same plane) within 1/32" toassure belt alignment within sheave grooves. To checkalignment, disconnect electrical power and remove thebeltguard. Place a straight edge against the outside ofthe flywheel and measure the distance from it to thenearest groove. Alignment is achieved when the otherend of the straight edge is within 1/32" of the measureddimension at the pulley grooves.

Manifold/Regulator Assembly -Removal and InstallationFor models equipped with a combined manifold andregulator, perform the following steps:

1. Removethe beltguard. See"Belt Guard - Removaland Installation" in this manual.

2. Remove the regulator panel rut by turning it counter-clockwise. As this nut is being removed, it will pushoff the snap-on regulator knob.

3. Unscrew and remove the air outlet adapter.4. Unscrew and remove the safety valve and washer.5. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, push down on the

top brass ring of the manifold tank fitting adapter,while pulling up on the manifold tube.

6. Remove the manifold from the belt guard.7. Other parts on the manifold/regulator can be re-

moved.

8. Reverse the above procedures for reinstalling parts.Tighten the manifold tube nut to the manifold using60 to 70 inch pounds. Tighten the safety valve untilit stops rotating. Push the manifold tube into thetank fitting until it won_ go any further.

Servicing Intake and Exhaust

The intake and exhaust valves as well as the valveplates and cylinder head will, over a period of time,accumulate a residue of carbon-like material on theirsurfaces. The material will decrease the efficiency ofthe compressor. These components should be in-spected whenever a problem is suspected and cleanedor replaced with new parts. Refer to "Outfit Parts List",if required. Use the following procedure to inspect theparts.

1. Unplug compressor and relieve all air pressurefrom the air tank.

2. Remove belt guard as noted in "Belt Guard -Removal and Installation" in this manual.

3. Disconnect the pressure release and outlet linesfrom the air compressor.

4. Remove the hardware securing the cylinder headand remove the cylinder head and valve plate.

MANY SOLVENTS ARE HIGHLY FLAM-MABLE AND A HEALTH HAZARD IF IN-HALED. ALWAYS OBSERVE THE SOLVENTMANUFACTURER'S SAFETY INSTRUC-TIONS AND WARNINGS.

5. Clean carbon deposits in head cavities and valveplates with lacquer thinner or other suitable solvent.

6. Clean the intake and exhaust valves with lacquerthinner or other suitable solvent. Inspect valves; re-place if necessary.

7. Reinstall valve plate and gaskets.8. Install the cylinder head. Snug mounting screws

and studs tight, then torque to 25 to 30 foot poundsstarting at the center and working toward the out-side.

9. Reconnect the pressure release and outlet lines tothe compressor pump.

i STORAGE OF COMPRESSOR OUTFIT I

1. Review the "Maintenance" section on the preced-ing pages and perform scheduled maintenance asnecessary. Drain the water from the air tank.

Retum the outfitto Sears Service Center to checkand adjust, orreplace switch.

Tighten fittings where air can be heard escaping.Check fittings with soapy water solution. DO NOTOVER-TIGHTEN.

CORRECTION

Tightenwingnut untilitcontactsthewasher,plusonemore turn.

Remove the head and valve plate. Cleanthe valveplate and topofthe piston.(Be surecarbondoes notfall into the cylinder.) Reassemble to 25-30 ft. Ibs.using new gasket and torque screws.

Adjust belt tension (see "Belt Replacement".)

Let the motor cool off and reset switch by pressingthe red button located on the end of the motor. If the

overload still trips, check for defective capacitor.

Motor wilt start automatically when tank pressuredrops below "cut-in" pressure of pressure switch.

Remove and clean, or replace. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN.

Check wiringconnectioninsidepressureswitchandmotorterminalbox area.

Return to Sears Service Center for inspectionorreplacementif necessary.

Havecheckedat a local Sears service Center.

1. Check fuse box for blown fuse and replace ifnecessary. Reset circuitbreaker. Do not use afuse orcircuitbreakerwithhigherratingthanthatspecifiedfor your particularbranchcircuit.

2. Check for proper fuse; only Buss "Fusetron"Type T fuses are acceptable.

3. Checkfor low voltageconditions.4. Removecheck valve and cleanorreplaceif it is

stuckopen or closed.5. Disconnectany other electricalappliancesfrom

circuit.The compressormustoperateonitsownbranchcircuit.

6. Do notuse an extension cord.

Bleedthe line by pushingthe leveronthe pressureswitchto the OFF position, openingthe pressurereleasevalve. If the valve stilldoesn'topen, it mustbe replaced.

Have checked at Sears Service Center. Do notoperate the compressor in the spray area. SeeFlammableVapor Warning.

Replacefilter.
