    C U R R I C U L U M

    A curriculum for Architectural Education evolvesfrom the nature of man and of society, and of its

    aims and aspirations, its expressional potentials. Itstates the relationships between man, hisinstitution, his techniques and its interpretation inspatial and physical terms. A curriculum is astatement of intentions, which in its structurestates the relationships between disciplines andcourses, clarifying objectives, stating emphasis andpoints of view. The aim of architectural educationas it is recognized is to train the mind to perceivethe context of man and society in its best potential,to interpret it through developed skills ofexpression into a sustainable and qualitative living

    environment.

    The Context The context of Indian Society brings together theinheritance of an ancient culture, its history,thought, philosophy, arts and architecture and itsvaried and multiple expressions, and thechallenges of a contemporary society with anevolving new social order, thought, philosophy, newtechniques and potentials of new expressions. Itdemands continuity with the ethos of the past, itssense of place; along with the capacity forcontinual rethinking and the need for transformedexpressions of the present time. This is made morepoignant in an economic order of dramaticvariations that demand architectural attention.

    The significant developments of the past few yearsand the indications for the future which must bereflected in the curriculum include:

    Environmental concerns: an increasing awarenessof the fragility of the man made environment andissues of balance of the manmade with the naturalorder. Issues of optimal use of natural resources,and sustainable development.

    Range of technological options: The validity ofappropriate technology and use of local techniquesand their continued relevance in developingeconomics, and on the other hand the access tosophisticated high technology and its use for

    present day building tasks in a globalising urbanenvironment.

    Rate of change of Cultural Dimensions: Therootedness of Indian society and value systems onthe one hand and the effect of global universal

    culture on the other hand.

    The impact on value systems: In a fast changing,and largely materialistic society the need todevelop human values that recognise the role ofthe architectural professional as an enabler, a formgiver, with an ability to take positions.

    The changing Role of the Profession: changestowards managing and co-ordinating variedspecialized skills and professions and yet to give ahumanizing quality to the built environment.

    These reflect in increasing concern with courses onEnvironmental Balances, Appropriate Technology,Advanced Technological Systems, course onIndigenous cultural roots and global impacts, andProfessional Management Systems. In DesignProcess these imply co-ordination of multipledimensions of specialized inputs and modernmedia and methods

    Goals The curriculum in stating a set of relationships andemphasis, and of methods, aims to develop anindividual rooted in his/her context of society andplace in India, capable of the disciplines and skillsthrough which to interpret them into a qualitativephysical environment. It aims at an individualcommitted to excellence and relevance.

    The major concerns the next few years will need toaddress are:

    Sensitivity to environmental balances betweenthe Man made and Natural systems Anarchitecture rooted in place, climate and thesocial conditions of India.

    The concern with Technological expression thatuses the most appropriate choice of materialand technique whether traditional or modern tothe nature of the task, and makes the mostappropriate use of resources and process athand.

    The development of an Architecture for theIndian conditions that continue from the Indiantradition and make modern day transformations.

    An architecture strongly related to thedefinition of the urban condition.

    The Education of an Architect capable of thevision, value systems and competence to bringtogether the multiple dimensions of theArchitectural task to integral qualitative builtenvironment.

    The Curriculum The curriculum states three major streams.

    The FIRST is oriented to MAN, SOCIETY andEXPRESSIONS, and deals with the development of

    culture, thought, philosophy, arts and sciences andtheir impact on the world. It deals with the areas ofHUMANITIES and SOCIAL SCIENCES as well as ARTSand CRAFTS.

    The SECOND is oriented to TECHNOLOGY, and dealswith the understandings of man, of the physicalworld, of materials, their properties, behaviour andtechniques through which man has shaped hisphysical built environment; of the elements of thephysical world that he must control and harness togive physical comfort. It deals with areas of

    CONSTRUCTIONAL SYSTEMS and SERVICESSTRUCTURAL SYSTEMS and ENVIRONMENTALSCIENCES as well as MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS.

    The THIRD and central discipline, is oriented toSYNTHESIS, of the forces of man and society, of thenature and needs of social institutions, interpretedthrough physical environment. This is the field ofDESIGN SYNTHESIS. It deals with the developmentof design sensibility and skills, the development ofvalue systems and identified positions, through thestudy of HISTORY and THEORY of ARCHITECTURE,

    Development of BASIC DESIGN LANGUAGE andSKILLS, and the use of contemporary MEDIA andMETHODS.

    From the first stream, knowledge is gathered aboutman, his needs and their myriad expressions, fromthe second stream, understandings are developedabout the nature of the physical world,environmental phenomena, and building

    possibilities. The Design Studio brings theseunderstandings together in developing expressionsfor the needs of human institutions in space andform that answers to integrity between part andwhole and conducive to a qualitative livingenvironment.

    Course Structure The course structure and relative emphasisbetween sub-disciplines vary depending on theirposition within the course.

    The First year emphasize the development ofbackground, sensibility, skills and its disciplines,and is considered as the FOUNDATION YEAR.

    The Second and Third years emphasize theInterrelationships between disciplines and theirresolutions into integral totals of increasedcomplexity and are considered the DEVELOPMENT

    YEARS.

    The Fourth and Final Years emphasize thedevelopment of the individual, his/her maturity,and establishment of directions and is termed theEXPOSITION years, during which the studentdevelops his/her theoretical understandings andskills or design synthesis to personal choice of

    directions, and to a high quality of manifestedresolutions.

    Credit Loads The course is of 5 years 10 semesters duration.The year consists of 2 semesters of approximately16 weeks each. Each semester carries a contactload of 24 credits, where 1 credit is equivalent to1.0 lecture hour/week in theoretical subjects and1.5 contact hours for studio, workshop, laboratorybased courses.

    Each semester normally consists of, in addition to

    the Design Studio, not more than 6 subjects andeach subject is normally of atleast 2 credits.

    In addition to subjects that form the CORE of thecurriculum the course offers 20 credits out of atotal of 240, as ELECTIVES. These electives areoffered within the disciplines of HUMANITIES, ARTSand CRAFTS: HISTORY AND THEORY, and

    TECHNOLOGY, so that a student can develophis/her interests in these areas, and design theemphasis structure he/she wishes to follow.

    Assessment Student performance is continually evaluatedthrough programs, projects, tests, quizzes andperiodic assessments of sessional work. Generallyat least 60% of the assessment is through thissystem, and not more than 40% weight is assignedto end of semester examinations. All core subjectsare examined at the end of the semester through

    juries, crits, viva-voce or examination papers.Electives are normally assessed throughassignments or papers.

    In order to clear a subject a student must obtain atleast 50% marks in all the assessments of thesubject.

    While grading is done by the teaching faculty in allsubject areas, the end of the Third Year and Fifth

    Year are examined additionally by an externalexaminer.
