HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR SMOKEDETECTORS LATELY??

Munds Park Community WatchBy Len Friedlund

There have been many articles over the past few years concerning several

important items that all residents in Munds Park should be aware of and fol-

lowing the Pinewood Fire Department (PFD) recommendation. One of these

items is the identification of your house with the proper address numbers.

Response to your home by either PFD or Coconino County Sheriff’s Office

(CCSO) Deputies needs to be as quick as possible and if your home does not

have easily identifiable house numbers, especially at night, valuable time can

be wasted searching for the right address. The best numbers you can get are

the green and white reflective numbers that are available at the PFD FOR

FREE!

Some home owners have expressed the opinion that those numbers are not

attractive and they prefer to put up some decorative numbers instead. That’s

fine…..as a matter of fact, I have some decorative numbers mounted on the

front of the house. But, I also have reflective green and white numbers on the

front of the fence at the side of the driveway close to the road. So, put both at

your residence….I don’t know about you but I certainly want the emergency

responders to find my house as quickly as possible!

The Coconino County Standard Addressing Ordinance No. 2007-5 says in

Section Seven, #7:

Street numbers shall be displayed so as to be conspicuously visible from

the street from both directions. If the address number on a structure is not

clearly visible from the street, it must be displayed near the street in a loca-

tion that is conspicuously visible from the street from both directions. Size

requirements for street numbers are a minimum of four inches in height.

You notice that the word “conspicuously” is used twice in this paragraph;

decorative numbers are seldom conspicuous, especially at night. In general,

most medical emergencies occur at night and I would hope that our residents

are eager to provide highly visible numbers for our responders to get to them

as rapidly as possible. The numbers available at the PFD are actually 3 ¾

inches square which is within tolerance of the ordinance but because they are

reflective, it provides great visibility. It should be mentioned that in the not too

distant future, the PFD will have a Munds Park Fire Code completed which

will require all residences to have these numbers.

The Munds Park Community Watch (MPCW) captains have surveyed their

areas for houses without the numbers and this information was used to ensure

adequate supplies of numbers at the PFD. In the future, residents who require

numbers will be contacted and encouraged to obtain the numbers from PFD. If

needed by the residents, members of the Firewise Community organization and

Community Watch will assist the home owner in mounting the numbers.

The next MPCW meeting will be on May 20, 6:30pm, at the PFD station,

weather dependent. Invited guests include personnel from the CCSO,

Coconino National Forest, National Weather Service, Emergency

Management, and Public Works along with Supervisor Matt Ryan. There is

information for the program utilizing the PPOA website www.pinewoodp-

poa.org and clicking on the MPCW tab. The PPOA supports the MPCW pro-

gram with funds to cover most of the costs associated with the program.

Pinewood News 7March 9, 2020

Well, not an actual trip, but a culinary trip around the

Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. Every February, I post

at least one recipe every day in some category on a blog

I write. This was my ninth year of such posts! Check me

out at www.sharonarthurmoore.blogspot.com to find

some good eats!

The first year of my blog I did soups, and in subse-

quent years I posted recipes for mini-desserts, appetiz-

ers, chicken and many more. This year I posted recipes

compatible with the Mediterranean Diet way of cooking

and eating.

Nine months ago I embarked on a serious plan to eat

and live more healthfully. (About time, right?) DH was

on board, so we have been on a journey to figure out

what we like to eat that fits in healthful lifestyle param-

eters.

The Mediterranean Diet is thousands of years old,

and recent research confirms that this is one of the two

most healthful ways to eat every day. The DASH diet

(Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is the other.

They share in common eating more fruits and vegeta-

bles along with limiting amounts of lean protein, as well

as cutting back on fat, refined grains, and sugar.

Sensible, right? Hard to do? Wrong.

In Greek, the word for “diet” means “way of life”. Not

deprivation, not crashing. None of those so-called diet

fads that can’t be maintained. A life-style change not a

temporary fix. It means that this is your new eating sys-

tem. Forever. And if it were boring, would the

Mediterranean/Aegean countries have created one of

the world’s favorite cuisines?

So just what is Mediterranean food? Ethnic staples

from Greece, Italy, Spain, North Africa (Algeria, Libya,

and Morocco) as well as the Middle Eastern countries of

Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey. Will I hit all these? Nope.

But, check out recipes from these countries that fit the

guidelines, and you can really expand your food options.

Spaghetti with marinara doesn’t define the

Mediterranean Diet.

I am not claiming all the recipes on my blog are THE

Mediterranean Diet. Rather the recipes are consistent

with the principles of this way of life. Thus, in the post of

dips, you’ll find not just tzatziki, but also pico de gallo

and guacamole!

I pulled some of these recipes for this month’s The

Quick Cook column. Enjoy! And when you see me this

summer, tell me which Mediterranean Diet foods you fix

at your house.

Here is an evening’s meal for you from entrée to side

to dessert. Enjoy!

Orange Chicken Crispy Green Beans

(serve 4—adapted from myrecipes.com)

4 chicken thighs

2 teaspoons olive oil

½ cup orange marmalade

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

1 teaspoon hot mustard

½ teaspoon sesame oil

Salt and pepper

8 ounces fresh green beans, trimmed

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Rub chicken thighs with

olive oil and place on prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle

with salt and pepper.

Wash and trim the beans.

Bake chicken for about 35 minutes (meat thermome-

ter 165 degrees).

of the sauce in a separate small bowl. Brush ½ the

remaining sauce on the green beans.

Remove chicken pan from oven and put beans on all

sides. Using the remaining sauce from the green beans

brush it on both tops and bottoms of the chicken.

Sprinkle on more salt and pepper on green beans and

on glazed chicken.

Put the oven on broil (500 degrees) and return baking

pan to oven. Broil about three minutes to get beans ten-

der and a nice brown crust on the chicken.

Serve the reserved sauce alongside to put on plated

chicken.

Quinoa “Fried Rice”

(serves 4)

1 cup quinoa, rinsed (follow package

directions to remove bitter coating)

Salt to taste

1 tablespoon extra-

virgin olive oil

1 large onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 large carrot, peeled

and diced

1 1/2 cups frozen peas

2 tablespoons soy sauce

3 large eggs, whisked

1 tablespoon sesame oil

Green onions, sliced

diagonally, for garnish

Cook quinoa with two cups of water in a medium

saucepan. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer

about 20 minutes until the water is absorbed. Salt and

toss with a fork. Set aside.

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add

onion, garlic, carrot, and frozen peas and cook until ten-

der, 8 to 10 minutes.

Add soy sauce and stir until combined. Add in beaten

eggs and stir quickly so that they scramble, about 1

minute.

Add cooked quinoa and stir to distribute. Let heat

through, about 3 minutes.

Drizzle with sesame oil, top with green onions, and

serve immediately.

Strawberry Fudge Frozen Greek Yogurt

(makes about 1 pint)

1 ½ cups Greek Honey Yogurt

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla

Pinch of salt

2 tablespoons strawberry jam or preserves

2 tablespoons chocolate syrup

For serving: shaved chocolate and

fresh strawberries

Whisk yogurt, lemon juice, vanilla, and salt until

smooth.

Process in ice cream maker according to directions.

Five minutes or so before the mixture is fully pro-

cessed, drizzle in strawberry jam and chocolate syrup

just to swirl the flavors through the frozen yogurt.

Put in airtight container and freeze for 2-4 hours until

frozen. Prior to serving, remove from freezer and let

stand for several minutes to soften. Frozen yogurt

freezes harder than ice cream.

While waiting, chop up strawberries and grate choco-

late to serve on top.

150 business days left until new TSA ID rules take effect

ADOT MVD urges Arizonans to get the AZ Travel ID

There are approximately 150 business days left until Oct. 1, and the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division remindscustomers to get the AZ Travel ID to make it through federal TSA airport checkpoints starting on that date.

“The clock is ticking and people need to get their AZ Travel ID,” said MVD Stakeholder Relations Manager Jennifer Bowser Richards. “Wedon’t want to see travel plans ruined because flyers don’t have an ID that the TSA will accept. That’s a very real risk for people who don’t getan AZ Travel ID.”

Customers should begin the application process at AZTravelID.com. They can make an appointment at ServiceArizona.com to visit an MVDoffice, or visit an Authorized Third Party office that provides license and ID services.

In order to get the AZ Travel ID, customers need to bring in a document such as a birth certificate or valid U.S. passport to prove identity and asecond document with their Social Security number. Finally, two pieces of documentation proving Arizona residency such as a utility bill, bankstatement or something similar with a current name and physical address (not a P.O. Box) are also needed.

The AZ Travel ID replaces the current license or ID and resets the expiration date. The cost is $25, and under federal law, it’s valid for eightyears.

Bowser Richards added, “There are customers who plan to simply use a passport even if they’re just flying to someplace like Atlanta, Denver,or L.A., which is their choice, but we suggest that the AZ Travel ID is more convenient. Other customers have told us they rarely, if ever, travelby air, but having an AZ Travel ID would be valuable in case of an unexpected trip that required air travel.”

Public Service MessageTo the Community of Munds Park:

To assist in delivering your mail in a timely and efficient manner,

please make sure that ALL ordered items include your PO BOX in a second

line of the address (example below), as UPS and FedEx sometimes turn

items over to the Postal Service. Many vendors’ websites reference the US

Postal Service database when customers enter their address, NO Munds

Park Street addresses appear in that database. This sometimes causes the

website to automatically convert the address you enter to some similar

address in Flagstaff. Other times, the website will challenge as incorrect,

but will allow you to click confirm the address as you entered it. At times,

some vendors’ websites will altogether reject the address as entered, and

you must call Customer Service, who can override the website’s rejection

on their end.

FOR ONLINE ORDERS you should always include your PO BOX

number as well as your street address, so you’re covered for whichever

carrier the vendor chooses. One of the following almost always works:

John Doe123 Whatever Street*Use the second line to enter PO BOX#, or it may get cut off in printing by

Vendor if on the first line, the options are below:

•Unit 12345•or Apt 12345•or #12345•or 12345 is my box Munds Park, AZ 86017

Items that arrive without a correct PO BOX number are typically returned to sender around 4pm. Mon-Fri.

Thank you for your attention on this matter.

Sincerely,

Munds Park Neighbors Trying to help.

The National Sleep Foundation will host its annual Sleep Awareness WeekMarch 8 to 14, 2020. According to www.sleepfoundation.org, “the annualevent celebrates sleep health and encourages the public to prioritize sleep toimprove their overall health and well-being.”

Sleep Awareness Week raises our consciousness of safe sleep – especially forour children. Safe sleep for children in foster care is the primary service ofArizona Helping Hands. In the summer of 2013, we learned that there wasno charity in Arizona that assisted with beds and cribs for children when theyare placed in the foster care system. We stepped in to fill this void, and bydoing so have cemented our position as the largest provider of essential needsto Arizona’s boys and girls in foster care.

Prior to 2013, it was not unusual to hear of children who had been removeddue to abuse and neglect who slept on piles of blankets on floors or foughtover whose turn it was for the sofa at Grandma’s house. Safe, comfortablesleep cannot be overestimated for children. A good night’s sleep preparesboys and girls to be alert at school and helps alleviate anxiety and tension inlives that have seen way too much stress.

Think of the babies - the consequences of babies not sleeping safely can havehorrific consequences. Did you know that every 5 days, a baby in Arizonasuffocates while sleeping? Do you know the ABC’s of safe sleep? A babyshould always A) Sleep Alone, B) on their Back, C) in a Crib.

Over the last 7 years our Safe Place to Sleep program has provided 14,344boys and girls with their own sanctuary – a twin bed or crib to sleep ontonight. Sleep Awareness Week is a perfect opportunity to say thanks to allthe donors who have made this important service possible. Without contribu-tions from our community, and the dollars Arizona taxpayers donate to usthrough the Arizona Foster Care Tax Credit program, Joey and Kaisha wouldstill be fighting over whose turn it was for the sofa tonight, and who wouldbe left to sleep on the floor!

As you read this, 14,000+ children are in our state’s foster care system.Every day we meet foster parents, grandparents and others who are calledinto service to provide love and safety to these kiddos at a moment’s notice.Arizona Helping Hands is frequently the first stop on their foster care jour-ney. They know we will help with beds, cribs, clothing, diapers and more toprovide safety, stability and health to boys and girls whose lives have beendisrupted and put at risk.

Please consider donating to support our work. The State of Arizona allowsindividual taxpayers to contribute $1,000 per year ($500 as a single taxpayer)to Arizona Helping Hands (QFCO#10003) and receive every dollar backwhen you file your State tax return. You can decide if your dollars will gointo our State treasury or be directed to give a child a place to safely laydown their head tonight.

During Sleep Awareness Week, I hope you enjoy many nights of peace andsafety, but please don’t forget the thousands of children who rely on ArizonaHelping Hands to experience basic comfort and safety in their very own bed!

Dan Shufelt is President & CEO of Arizona Helping Hands, the largest

provider of basic needs to Arizona’s children in foster care. Learn more

People ask me how the Wuhan Coronavirus affects the way Itravel. Will I cancel travel because of the Coronavirus? Here’sthe truth about how Coronavirus affects me as a traveler andthe Wuhan Coronavirus tracker

Last weekend at a party someone said, “The Wuhan Coronavirus has spread toHawaii now.” I checked my Coronavirus COVID-19 Global Cases tracker by JohnsHopkins and saw nothing to back up that report.*

“Will they cancel our conference in Sicily?” lamented a fellow travel blogger on theconference’s Facebook page. Since cluster cases have shown up in northern Italy nearMilan, the page is buzzing about predictions of cancellation. I replied, “I’m pressing on,regardless.”

Nevertheless, I checked the Johns Hopkins tracker to monitor the situation in Italyand finally changed my flights in and out of Milan. I am currently booked in and out ofRome, but continue to monitor the status. Since then, the US State Department is ask-ing citizens not to travel to Lombardy, the province in which Milan is located. In rebook-ing last-minute flights (from Milan to Sicily) and hotels, I’ll lose money, but I believethat it is worth the effort.

“Should I wear a mask?” I wondered boarding a flight from Minneapolis to Phoenixon January 27. “I don’t want to scare other passengers, but I want to keep myself safe.”

That week at Bible study in Munds Park, anotherstated, “The Coronavirus affects the very young andold.” “Not, really,” I replied. “That’s true for regular fluviruses, but not his one. You probably heard that earlyon from journalists who hadn’t done their fact-check-ing.”

The fact is, we’re all talking about the Coronavirus, aka COVID-19, and wondering how it will affect ourtravels.

You Can Track the Spread of the Coronavirus

In three days, I hope to be boarding a plane forRome and Sicily—that blogger conference mentionedearlier. I’m trying to get all the info I can about the Coronavirus before I go. I’m usingthe Johns Hopkins University website with mapping that allows us to see where theCoronavirus has spread. And you, too, can track the spread of the Coronavirus with thistool at

http://bit.ly/CV-Johns-Hopkins.

Should I Wear a Mask?

I ended up wearing the mask on the Minneapolis to Phoenix flight and my final leginto Flagstaff. But as it turned out, a stomach bug hit me by the time we landed inFlagstaff. Since you typically have the virus before showing symptoms, I had been con-tagious when I put the mask on.

Consequently, I was protecting others from mygerms rather than the other way around. Theblessings of irony! Fortunately for me, it was a 48-hour (or so) stomach flu. I have flown twice sincethen and did not use a mask.

Why are we so concerned about WuhanCoronavirus?

Some of us are concerned about Coronavirusbecause other flu epidemics have affected ourfriends or family members. The 1918 Pandemic Flu,also known as the Spanish flu, killed 50 million peo-ple. My great aunt, Mabel Silverness Esterson, wasone of them. Mabel, a mother of two toddlers, wasonly 25 years old when she died of influenza inMinnesota. The 1918 Flu hit young and middle-aged adults (aged 20-50) as the Coronavirus isdoing today.

Cancel travel because ofthe Coronavirus? I didn’t

cancel this January 27flight

How Coronavirus Affectsthe Way I Travel

By Stacey Wittig“Unstoppable

Stacey”Travel Writer

The other thing I hear at partiesand gatherings, “So what? The flu killsevery year – this Corona outbreak isno big deal.” However, Coronavirus ismore transmissible and looks to havea higher case mortality rate than thetypical flu.

How does Coronavirus Affects theWay That I Travel?

So is Coronavirus affecting the waythat I travel? First, I’m flexible tomake last-minute changes in my plans.(Check my Facebook to see if I actuallyleft on March 5.) Secondly, I wash myhands more frequently. I bring hand sanitizer with me and use it. I refrain fromshaking hands with people. Elbow bumps are good!

I ordered Clorox Wipes that kill influenza germs. I will use them to wipedown the tray table at my airplane seat. It’s said that the tray is one of themost germ-bearing pieces of equipment on a plane.

Covering my mouth with the inside of my elbow when I cough or sneeze ismandatory. That’s why I now carry a mask with me. Some say they are not sobeneficial, but if I get stuck next to someone hacking without covering theirmouth, I’ll put it on. That will make me feel better and give me compassion forthe cougher. As further prevention, I’m also taking a double dose of theturmeric that I take every day, trying to get more sleep and simply distancingmyself from sick people when I can.

I’m also watching my Johns Hopkins Coronavirus COVID-19 Global Casestracker.

• Wash hands frequently

• Tote hand sanitizer

• Wipe down tray tables

• Cover mouth with an inner elbow when coughing or sneezing

• Carry a hygienic mask

• Double dose of turmeric

• Social distancing

• Watch Johns Hopkins Coronavirus COVID-19 Global Cases tracker.

*Although there are no Coronavirus cases in Hawaii, the New York Timesreported that Japanese medical experts confirmed that a man and woman inJapan have the virus after the couple returned from vacationing in Hawaii.

Mr. Valentine

By Annie Weissman

Single Senior

I used to like Valentine’s Day until my second husband chose that

day to tell me he wanted a divorce. I try to ignore the day now.

I got a message on an internet dating site on Valentine’s Day. The

fellow’s profile seemed okay so I agreed to meet him at The Sugar Bowl,

my favorite ice cream place in downtown Scottsdale. I had a luscious hot

fudge Sunday with chocolate chip ice cream while he had a sandwich since

he hadn’t eaten dinner. We talked and laughed and seemed to get along.

We went across the street to Grimaldi’s for some cocktails. We had to wait

for a table and spent some time talking with some women in their early

forties about dating. We did a lot of laughing. He was quite attentive and

gave me mucho compliments.

At the table, we continued to banter and laugh. I had two Mai Tais

and was felling good but not high or drunk. I had to take a seven a.m.

flight on Monday to Hobbs, NM and he offered to stay overnight and drive

me the next morning. I just laughed, knowing it was too soon for that kind

of involvement.

He walked me to my car, about three blocks away from the restau-

rant. He kissed me, which I invited. Then he tried more and I pushed him

away. I smiled, got into my car, and drove home. He looked surprised.

He texted me the next day, anxious to sleep over before my flight.

However, I woke up with a cold and started taking Zicam tablets (they

work!) so I wouldn’t get a full-blown cold. I texted him that I was sick and

I didn’t want to do any socializing before I left since I was trying to head

off the cold. He texted me back once, then not again.

He was a Player, a guy who roams Internet dating sites in order to

score. In other words, a guy who flatters women until he gets them in bed

and then drops them. If the woman is not willing or available in the next

few days, he goes on to the next.

I felt good about the date. I had a fun time on Valentine’s Day and

expected nothing else.

If you’re up for an R rating book, check out my new one, Sex and the

Single Senior, available on Amazon in paperback or Kindle.

MARY NAILS HARRY TO THE WALL

Our friends, Harry and Mary, had ben dating for some time,

long enough that Mary knew she had better draw the line.

Friends and family were asking them when they were getting married.

It wasn’t Mary’s doing, it was Harry who had tarried.

Harry’s always figured Mary ‘d make him a fine wife.

Trouble was, he wasn’t ready to settle down to married life.

He really cared for Mary’s kids, he just didn’t want to be a dad.

He started thinking about an old girlfriend that years ago he’d had.

It so happened that this former flame had recently become single,

The more he thought about her, the more his heart began to tingle.

So one evening he told Mary he wouldn’t be seeing her any more.

Mary was so shocked and hurt she nearly hit the floor.

Harry felt a little guilty, he was behaving like a louse.

But Mary got on with her life, even bought a little house.

She tried to heal her broken heart by fixing up the place,

But memories of all they’d shared she simply could not erase.

A few weeks passed and then one night she got a call from Harry.

He sounded very timid and his words were somewhat wary.

He said things had not worked out between him and Rosalie,

and could Mary go to dinner tomorrow night, if she were free?

Mary answered coolly, “I’m sorry, I have a date.

Ted and I are skiing, we won’t be home till late.”

It had never entered Harry’s mind that Mary would start dating.

He’d just assumed, when he was ready, she would

be there…waiting.

Mary made him wait a week before she let him take her out,

And she was so cool and stand-offish that Harry began to pout.

“Look,” he finally said, “I’m really sorry about Rosalie,

but I simply had to find out if she and I were meant to be.

The entire time I was with her, well, I kept thinking about YOU,

And how much you mean to me….and I’ve been really blue

to have been so blind a fool that I’ve lost all I had…”

and Harry’s eyes were filled with tears,

which really made Mary glad!

So Mary said to Harry, “You just might like the married life.”

And Harry said to Mary, “Mary, will you be my wife?”

Mary’s eyes were twinkling, “I’ll think it over,” she replied.

Harry kissed her long and hard until at last she sighed,

“All right, Harry, you’ve worn me down, so let’s no longer stall.”

The next day they went to Vegas and Mary nailed Harry to the wall.

Arizona State Public Health Laboratory

Confirms One Presumptive Positive Case of COVID-19

in Maricopa County

Case is the First to Be Identified by the Arizona State Public Health Laboratory

PHOENIX — Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) and the Ari-

zona Department of Health Services (ADHS) confirmed a presumptive positive case of

COVID-19, bringing the total COVID-19 case count in Arizona to two, with both cases

in Maricopa County. The case, a man in his 20s, is not hospitalized and is recovering at

home. This individual is a known contact of a presumed positive case outside of Ari-

zona who had traveled to an area with community spread of COVID-19.

“With the case counts increasing around the country, it is no surprise that we have an-

other case here in Maricopa County,” said Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, medical director for

disease control for Maricopa County Department of Public Health. “The good news is

that this individual is in stable condition and is expected to have a full recovery, as are

most people who become infected with this disease”

The ADHS State Public Health Lab began testing for COVID-19 on March 2 and was

able to detect this positive case on its first day of testing, the same day that MCDPH re-

quested that this individual be tested.

“We’re fortunate to have a state-of-the-art public health laboratory in Arizona that will

help us identify additional cases of COVID-19 quickly,” said Dr. Cara Christ, ADHS di-

rector. “Our lab has routinely been on the forefront of testing for emerging infectious

diseases including Ebola, Zika, and now COVID-19. I’m grateful to our dedicated labo-

ratory staff who support Arizona public health daily by providing testing services to in-

form public health decision making.”

After receiving the presumptive positive, MCDPH staff have interviewed close contacts

of the case and recommended that they monitor for symptoms and quarantine them-

selves for 14 days based on the risk of exposure.

“As far as risk to the public, we are still doing the case investigation of this individual,

however, because we know when and where this individual was exposed, this does not

represent community spread,” Dr. Sunenshine said.

COVID-19 is believed to spread mostly through respiratory droplets produced when a

sick person coughs or sneezes. Signs and symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough,

and shortness of breath. The best way to prevent COVID-19 and other respiratory dis-

eases is to:

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Stay home when you are sick.

• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

• Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces using a

regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap

and water is not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

For more information please visit http://www.Maricopa.gov/Coronavirus. For statewide

case counts and information about testing at the Arizona State Public Health Lab, please

visit www.azhealth.gov/COVID-19.

Annual Willard Springs green waste burn in progress

Coconino County Public Works, in conjunction with the U.S. Forest

Service, has ignited the annual green waste burn at the Willard Springs

Transfer Station. The burn is lo-

cated 17 miles south of Flagstaff

on the west side of I-17.

The annual green waste burn re-

duces the existing stockpile of pine

needles, tree trimmings and other

green waste at the transfer station

prior to the 2020 fire season. The

burn is expected to smolder until

mid-spring and will be monitored

by the Mormon Lake Ranger Sta-

tion, Pinewood Fire Department

and the Coconino County Public Works Solid Waste Division.

Based on wind and weather conditions, smoke may be heavy at times

and visible to motorists on I-17. The Coconino National Forest plans to

post signage on I-17 as necessary to notify motorists about smoke

from the burn and to drive with caution. Smoke will be most promi-

nent during the ignition period, which is expected to last for approxi-

mately three weeks.

When smoke levels are high, the appropriate protective measures

should be followed:

• Reduce or avoid outdoor activities.

• Use the recycle or re-circulate mode on the air conditioner/heater in

your home or car.

• Do not add to indoor air pollution. Don’t use anything that burns,

such as wood fireplaces, gas logs, gas stoves, or even candles.

People with pre-existing conditions should avoid exposure to the

smoke as much as possible and consult their physician if they have any

questions or experience health issues. More information regarding the

health effect of smoke from prescribed burns and wildfires is available

at http://bit.ly/SmokeHealthAwareness.

For more information, please contact Ron Hollamon, Coconino County

Public Works Solid Waste Manager at (928) 679-8300

32 March 9, 2020 Pinewood News

Boy oh Boy, the onslaught has begun! People fleeing California and moving to

Arizona has become a daily occurrence. While it is a benefit to those of us in

real estate, as many folks from California pay cash and buy large beautiful

homes, the rise in the relocations is truly amazing. My first five sales of the

year were all older couples fleeing California to the safety and desirable living

standards we enjoy in Arizona.

Couple number one moved to Arizona a few years ago and live in Queen Creek

and decided they would like to escape the summer heat. After looking for a few

weeks last December, they settled on a $1,965,000 Pine Canyon home in

Flagstaff which closed the second week of January. Very nice, nearly 7000

square foot home overlooking the golf course and facing the San Francisco

Peaks.

Couples two and three both vacated Southern California to settle in the Tatum

Ranch area and Vistancia, both in half million dollar homes as they were down-

sizing and expect this to be their final home purchase. In each instance, these

two couples explained that the quality of life they had been used to in Califor-

nia had eroded over the past few years, coupled with the crime, traffic and

taxes, they were elated to be moving to Arizona.

My most recent sale was a listing in Scottsdale, 85254, that was listed at

$525,000 and sold two hours after the listing was activated for full price. It is

closing next week. The buyer, a lady who moved from Los Angeles about a

year ago and has been renting, waiting for the “property” she wanted to be-

come available. In the greater metropolitan Phoenix area, it is a full-out “Sell-

ers’ Market” for those homeowners who present a clean, updated and ready to

move into property for sale. No Quibbling…full-price. Location, of course, is of

upmost importance.

On the other hand, in the Munds Park arena we are dealing with a whole other

issue. The year has started out to be the best in memory with 26 sales totaling

$5,721,500 versus last years eleven sales totaling $3,050,600 in sales ( through

March 5th). The inventory is the absolute lowest of anytime since I have been

writing these articles (ten plus years) with only 41 available properties on the

market ACTIVE and for sale totaling $15,931,500 in inventory….virtually noth-

ing. It represents a mere 1.2% of the total properties in Munds Park. Yes, it is

early in the selling season and more listings will come onto the market but with

this limited supply of homes available the pickings are puny and the multiple

offer syndromes are bound to occur. Factor in that of the forty-one properties

available, they are listed by twenty-two different listing agents. Synopsis: real-

tors are going to starve this year! With so few properties listed and so many

hands in the pot trying to sell those few listings, it is going to get downright

ugly.

The moral of my story is to choose your realtor well. Choose someone who

lives and works in Munds Park and can show your property in a minute. Choose

a realtor who will present you with a captivating marketing plan rather than

just “list” and “watch.” Provident Partners realtors live and work in Munds Park

and will list your property in both the Northern Arizona Multiple Listing System

and ARMLS, which is the MLS service in Phoenix…this is very important.

Additionally, choose a realtor who actually knows about Munds Park and can

answer the variety of site specific questions that only a resident could answer.

Prepare your home for showings by making sure your front door is easy access,

clean and that the door lock works. Simple things that make all of the differ-

ence for a first impression.

For more ideas on how we would present your property for sale and market it

professionally to insure your greatest possible return on your investment, call

us at 928-286-9171 or you can reach me personally on my cell phone at 602-

622-1196. Spring is just around the corner…the top selling time of the year!

Looking forward to hearing from you.

18- to 24-Year-Olds Who Don’t Live With

Parents Are Hard to Count

AMERICA COUNTS STAFF

More than half of the 18- to 24-year-olds in

the United States live with their parents and

will be counted in their parents’ home when

the 2020 Census begins this spring.

The other 45% of young adults don’t live at

home and are considered less likely to re-

spond because they are what the U.S. Census

Bureau calls “young and mobile.”

The “young and mobile” population is

made up of the youngest Millennials born at

the tail end of their generation but it primarily

includes the oldest members of Generation Z

born after 1996.

These 18- to 24-year-olds are living on

their own or with roommates, and tend to be

unmarried and renters. Many have moved so

frequently that surveys and mailings from the

Census Bureau may never reach them.

And when census takers attempt to reach

them in person, the multiunit buildings in

which many live can be difficult to access be-

cause of locked gates or lobbies. If census

takers do reach their front doors, often the

young people who live there may be out and

about, rather than at home.

Because they were too young to take the

last decennial census, some young adults may

not understand that they’re supposed to fill

out a census questionnaire or why it’s impor-

tant.

More than 39% say they’re not familiar

with the 2020 Census and more than 18% say

they’re unlikely to respond, according to the

2020 Census Barriers, Attitudes and Motiva-

tors Study (CBAMS) on attitudes towards re-

sponding to the 2020 Census. The Census

Bureau surveyed nearly 17,500 people (out of

a nationally representative sample of 50,000

households) and held 42 focus groups in mul-

tiple languages.

The “young and mobile” population is

made up of the youngest Millennials born at

the tail end of their generation but it primarily

includes the oldest members of Generation Z

born after 1996.

Reaching the Digital Generation

For the first time, almost everyone will be

invited to respond to the census online.

Internet Self-Response (ISR) is just one of

several census operational features that will

help the Census Bureau engage with a young

and mobile population in 2020.

T o drive responses to the 2020 Census, a

paid advertising campaign — based on survey

and focus group research into barriers, atti-

tudes and motivators for census participation

— will engage young adults in places they

frequent online.

Social media will allow direct engagement

with the young and mobile audience.

The Census Bureau is also recruiting appli-

cants on college campuses across the country

to fill up to 500,000 temporary positions to

help count everyone in the United States.

Why the Young and Mobile Should Care

About the Census

The 2020 Census will be the first census

that young adults have a chance to respond to

on their own.

It’s important for young adults to partici-

pate because their answers will help shape

their futures. The count will determine how

many seats each state gets in the U.S. House

of Representatives. It will also inform the dis-

tribution of billions of dollars a year in federal

funding for public programs that many young

adults value, including pedestrian-friendly

urban development and public transit.

Among other things, local, state and federal

policymakers use census responses to decide

how to award federal transit grants.

Census statistics also inform funding for

Pell Grants — the federal student-aid program

many low-income young adults rely on to fi-

nance their higher education. More than 7.5

million students without a bachelor’s degree

were projected to receive the grants in fiscal

year 2018, according to the Congressional

Budget Office.

And these young adults won’t be young

forever. By the next census in 2030, more

may be married, have children, and be settled

in a community. That’s why they should care

about the federal funding for schools, fire-

houses, local parks and education programs

for their children.

“ By filling in the census, you are partici-

pating in a democracy,” said Cecilia Clarke,

president and CEO of the Brooklyn Commu-

nity Foundation and a member of the Brook-

lyn Complete Count Committee. “Your voice

matters, and that voice can be an engine to

make things better in this country.”

Communities Depend on Young and

Mobile Responses

The census tracts most heavily populated

by young and mobile adults are largely con-

centrated close to the coasts, most of them

east of the Mississippi River, according to the

Census Bureau.

One hub is the New York City borough of

Brooklyn — population 2.6 million. Like the

city’s four other boroughs and communities

across the country, its residents depend on

census-informed federal funding to support

their schools, public housing, roads, bridges

and other public services.

Yet only 35% of households in some New

York City neighborhoods responded to the

2010 Census, officials say.

“The more New York City is under-

counted, and the more Brooklyn is under-

counted, the less federal investment there is,

the less desirable it becomes,” Clarke said. “It

essentially would make it ultimately a not

very desirable place to live if it doesn’t have

hospitals and good schools."

***Emergency Change Notification***Pinewood Fire District has the capacity to use the siren to

communicate a true emergency to our community.

The Omni-directional Siren will now be utilized ONLY in the

event of a TRUE EMERGENCY. The Thorgard Lightning

detection system will remain in place at the fire station. The

Thorgard system includes a set of air horns located on the

roof of the fire station and will still sound when there is light-

ning in the area. The Country Club will then set off their

electronic siren (located near the pro shop) to notify golfers

on the course.

Again, the Omni-directional Siren located at the playground

will now be exclusively used to notify community members

of a true emergency. The activation of this siren will coincide

with a message from the Coconino County Emergency

Notification System.

We encourage everyone to sign up for the County alerts at

Additional information will be available on the District

website at www.pinewoodfire.org and on our Facebook page

MUNDS PARK COMMUNITY CHURCH UPDATE by Mike Simswww.mundsparkcc.org

DO IT!!

Do you continually worry about something in the past?Perhaps it’s a misunderstanding with a friend that youthink you caused. It could be something you’ve doneand feel guilty. Could it be you would like to speakwith a friend you miss, but it seems like you are alwaysthe one who calls and by golly you just aren’t going todo it!

I have to admit that I have experienced all of theseemotions at one time or another. Sometimes the personI mistreated hadn’t even taken my perceived slight as aconcern. I ended up beating myself up for no goodreason. In spite of the other person’s insistence thatthey were not offended, I felt a lot better once I apolo-gized.

I stopped keeping count regarding who called whomlast. What a waste of my time! I don’t know what theother person has going on in their life. Why worryabout them not calling me? When I call and have agreat conversation, I’m glad I took the effort.

Are you a sneaky little devil from time to time andonly you know what you did? You feel guilty andcan’t forgive yourself. Just confess your mess to Jesusand ask for forgiveness and then let go of it!

As my friend Judy says, worrying about stuff is likegiving problems “Free Rent in Your Head.”

In Mark 11:25 we read, “And whenever you standpraying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone,so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgiveyou your trespasses.” Forgive others and forgive your-

self! DO IT!

Please join us for a Bible study or church servicesoon.

God bless each of you!
