Case of a Child Suffering from Ear Infections This is a case study of a four-year-old child, arriving with his mother for a first consul- tation on 28.4.10. Observation: a delicate looking child, with an adorable smile. Plays with the fairies and butterflies on my desk. The problem for which they approached me: repetitive ear infections. The child suffers from a common cold most of the time. The mother tells me that since he was a baby he suffered from recurring ear infections, a condition accompanied with secretion from the ears. He constantly suffers from the common cold, which became a chronic condition with a constantly stuffed nose. The last ear infection occurred a month ago, when he was found to have enlarged ade- noids, a third tonsil and an air blockage. The teacher in his playschool thought his hearing was decreasing. Medical findings showed a slight decrease. He grinds his teeth at night, especially when it is noisy for instance, when his baby brother cries. Still wets his bed at night. The mother narrates He has two older brothers (8, 11) and a younger one-year-old brother (received him relatively well, pretty much ignores him ) He is an amazing child, he becomes accli- matized quickly everywhere. He is very cool and gets along with everything. He has no anxieties during day-to-day life. He was always a calm child, and this is why I decided to have yet another baby but perhaps, something which is suppressed during the day surfaces at night? During the day he is calm, but a medium we con- sulted suggested his anxieties are related with a past life. He is occupied with what happens when one dies, what will happen when he dies? When his mother dies? He is a sensitive child, and highly sociable. He is friends with everyone in his play- school; when he sees someone from afar he will call him even if he is on the other side of the street. He is also quick to be- friend new children. He has a highly developed imagination and a high ability to concentrate; he can occupy himself on his own. He likes cuddling, falls asleep at night while stroking me. He is good with girls. He is not a fighting, physical boy. (Strokes himself with a feather at my office.) Knows how to express love, to cuddle and hold, can even hug and kiss his friends from time to time. Communicates, like my husband, some- thing optimistic, happy and safe. However, like him, he is addicted to control: he is bossy, tries to dictate the course of events so that things will go the way he intends them to. He dislikes changes. Rigid, even though from the outside he appears soft and sweet. Highly competitive he has to be in first place, it is very important to him, to be number one with his siblings in particu- lar, even though he is younger than they are. When his siblings fight he tells them he is friends with both of them. On the one hand he competes with them and on the other, it is highly important that everyone likes him. Should one brother tell him, I am not your friend”– he wants to die. This really threatens him. It is highly important that they will not be angry with him. If I am angry with him he is worried about it, from a young age. He is short for his age. Cravings: Sweets (3) especially lollipops, purple, pink and red ones. He likes to eat chocolate and cheese. Otherwise he is not much of an eater. He is not fond of tomatoes (recently) and potatoes. Pregnancy was desired and healthy but the labor was induced (Pitocin) since he was not yet born by his due date. The hospital pressured us to induce the labor, but it was unnecessary. The birth was horrific, and I went through immense pain. I felt horrible contractions the worst pain I ever felt.Speech late: it took a while until he spoke. To this day he mispronounces words. Pimples? The mom suffered from them as a teenager, the father did too. Case Analysis In approaching this case I used the Table of Plants structure (see further details later on), as the case demonstrates clear indica- tions of the fifth column in the Table: the competitiveness, bossiness, his need to control others, to be the first, to be taller. All that points to the fifth column. His need to establish relationships, his needs to please others, to be likeable in a charming way along with excessive emotional sensi- tivity, occupation with the world beyond, SUMMARY This case demonstrates the use of my systemʼs table of plants in arriving at and deciding the remedy and understanding the reasoning in this case. He likes cuddling, falls asleep at night whilestroking me. He is good with girls. He is nota fighting, physical boy. (Strokes himselfwith a feather at my office.) Knows how toexpress love, to cuddle and hold, can evenhug and kiss his friends from time to time.

thoughts about death and ghosts – all pointto the first row, particularly with the his-tory of an early-induced labor, which is aclear indication of a “pre” process, or thefirst row.

There is an excessive need to please, thegentleness, the desire to hug, kiss and cud-dle, and the desire for sweets; the “pink”aura that surrounds the entire case. Allthese point to the Rose family (which issituated in the beginning of the fifth col-umn).

Out of the Rosales, Rosa damascena has aknown affinity to ear pathology, and issueswith height and competitiveness. Thus itwas chosen as the remedy for the case (seeFig. 1 and Table 1).

Prescription: Rosa damascena C12 oncedaily

Follow-upAfter two monthsA day after taking the remedy for the firsttime he developed a high fever which,within one day, was gone, on its own. Sincethen he has been healthy, apart from oneoccasion onwhich the parents went abroadand he was in playschool. He got sick butrecovered two days after his parents re-turned. He was healthy until a flu epidemicerupted at school a few days ago. His par-ents travelled and left him with his grand-parents: he woke up saying that his bodyhurts and he cannot go to playschool. Has acough, which is rather deep, but no sinusi-tis even though he suffers from a slightcommon cold.

He does not eat well. He only eats candiesand cakes.

The teeth grinding decreased, but it still ex-ists.

He does not wet his bed that much.

The competitiveness is still there: he mustbe first to receive the food; he fights overhis place with his elder brother, eventhough he loves him. Apparently, the issueis his young brother; it seems now that hewould have been happy to give him away.The jealousy is out.

He is more insolent and rebellious than be-fore. He used to be a conformist child. Heused to do anything to make you like him.Now he threatens to leave the house whenthings are not done his way.

Prescription: Switch to fluid Rosa damas-cena C12, 1 drop daily

Again two months laterBed-wetting ceased entirely: one day hesimply asked to sleep without a nappy andhas been dry since.

Teeth grinding has almost stopped. Hissleep is calmer.

He no longer suffers from the cold.

Mentally – he is calmer, less agitated, hasless tantrums, is still competitive with hisbrother and sister but the most clearchange is individualism, which was absentbeforehand. This can be seen with hisfriends: if they do not want to play hisgames – he goes on to play by himself, anddoes not try to please them. He began tak-ing his remedy by himself (with a shy andengaging smile he tells me that his motherhelps him. So this quality of the remedy isstill there).

Prescription: Raise potency to Rosa damas-cena C15 – 1 drop a day.

Later on, we further increased the potencyto C18.

Again two months laterPhysically he is fine. Hearing is normal. Si-nuses clean. No cold. The jealousy for hisbrother also passed and he is very nice tohim. Also, the anxiety level decreased sig-nificantly. In playschool he is highly popu-lar, a leader. Wants things to be done hisway – rather spoiled…

In the following winter they came for an ad-ditional session as he had a slight cold andsome teeth grinding. He has fears of ghosts.Again his mother tells me he is very popu-lar among his friends; he is bossy but in asweet manner (he intervenes and says: “Iam going to dress up as a king.”). He likes tofeel soft fabrics, strokes his motherʼs sleevebefore falling asleep. Again, he is jealous ofthe attention that the older sibling provideshis sister.

Now we refer to his eating habits: he is stilla very picky eater and will not touch manytypes of food. Eats a small variety of fruitsand vegetables and still prefers sweets.

Prescription: Increase to Rosa damascenaC30 1 drop daily

Fifteen months after intakeStill takes Rosa damascena C30.

The cold is gone and for the rest of the win-ter he did not suffer from it.

Sleeps well.

His eating habits have improved. All of asudden he has an appetite.

It turns out that there was something theynever reported: a tendency for weaknesswith heart involvement: it appears hewould get tired easily. Also, when he com-peted with a friend, if the friend was aboutto beat him, he would complain that hisheart aches. This has improved as well.

He remains bossy.

Treatment: continue for another monthwith Rosa damascena C30 and then in-crease to C200. Single dose.

Two months laterThe parents report that all is well. Shouldthe need arise, they will give a single doseof Rosa damascena C200.

The Structure andMethodology of thePlant Table

Plants are the source of natureʼs ability toevolve and develop. Observing nature, welearn thatdevelopment is inherent tothees-sence of the plants kingdom. Continuouslygrowing1 and ever evolving, plants adapt tonature and create it at the same time.

Plants were the first to fashion the idea ofseparation in nature: Unlike minerals,plants have a membrane separating themfrom the environment, an attitude that al-lows them to develop along their own evo-lutionary lines and pace, which is a quickerone than the mineralsʼ. The evolutionarychangesplantsgo throughpropel evolution-arychanges for thewholebiosphere, includ-ing the atmosphere, minerals and animals.

More so, plants are the foundation for theexistence of life, providing oxygen, carbonand nutrition. Plants propel minerals fromearth outward and from the air inward intothe earth, availing it to the biosphere, al-lowing growth and continuation of life onearth. In this sense, the plants kingdom actsas a stirring mediator between the worlds,expressing an archetype of continuousgrowth and development.

In accordance with its developing nature,the plant kingdomʼs evolution can be seento correspondwith human psyche develop-ment, seeing that both share the innate na-ture of growth and development. At timeswhere development is halted, manifestingas a disease, the corresponding plant canbe summoned. This is one more gift theplant world offers.

The Plants schema structure expresses thiscorrespondence in amanner akin to the ho-meopathic understanding of the Periodictable of elements; its axes, however, arefounded on evolutionary stages of botanicaldevelopment. The building block of the ta-ble is not a single plant or a remedy, but awhole botanical group. Thus every squareof the table contains one or few Orders2 orFamilies. The reason the Plants schemadoesnʼt present specific remedies as itsbuilding blocks is that while the MineralKingdom contains 118 elements, the PlantKingdom consists of thousands of plantswhich necessitated aggregating them bygroups – namely Families and Orders.

I found Cronquistʼs3 systematics suitable forthe tableʼs scheme as it is led by evolution-ary vision, being grounded mostly on ho-meopathic-like “signs and symptoms” offunction and sense in the Plant Kingdom.

When the table is systematized in such anorder, with vectors of botanic evolution, it

becomes quite easy to decipher the homeo-pathic sense of it by assembling theMateriaMedica information from all the remedieswithin each family – “as if one remedy”,and interpreting it according to its locationin the table. In an astonishing order, the ax-es of botanical development and their cor-respondent remedies are found to parallelstages of human development.

This way, each square in the table presentsa convergence point of two axes – Ego con-struction and levels of growth and develop-ment: the horizontal axis is formed by sep-aration and individuation stages while thevertical axis forms maturation levels. Thisprovides physiological, emotional andmental content to each family of plants.While Families of plants present the collec-tive themes that correspond to any givenlocation on the table, a single remedy de-scribes only certain variations of thosethemes.

The Table of Plants thus provides a schemathat links plantsʼ developmental stages tohuman developmental stages. The table re-fers to the challenges and obstacles metduring the developmental journey of theEgo from a primary stage of union and one-ness to an advanced stage of individuality.Learning and absorbing the lessons of thefeminine and the masculine elements.

The Plants table provides reason and expla-nations to remedies, as well as to qualitiesof families of remedies. It allows betterunderstanding of cases, as well as promot-ing understanding of small remedies andnew provings. The Plants table can providean understanding as to why the remedydisplays certain characteristics as well asto why a case calls for a remedy belongingto a certain Family. The beauty of the planttableʼs systematics is that, without contra-

diction, it complements and adds depth tocase analysis, regardless of whether the ap-proach is of a conservative or modern ho-meopathic method.

Extended description of the essence ofthe columnsThe First Column (Unity) depicts an initialstate of awareness to the unified femininequality element that, by its nature, givesbirth and initiates processes. The first col-umn represents a unity with the infinityfrom which everything bursts, and is sym-bolized by water, first chakra and more.Problems or lessons related to the first col-umn can be expressed as a lack of bound-aries and discrimination, a weak, depen-dent and influenced Ego, spaced out andinattentive. A state of awareness might bethere, yet the inability to act. Typical rem-edies are: Op, Staph, Arist, Lotus, Asar, Nux-m, Acon, Puls.

In the Second Column (Here or There) theinitial separation begins (a first masculine

impulse enters the process of the table), fol-lowed by a sense of smallness and weak-ness, as effort is put into “standing by one-self”. Issues presented are related to beingsmall or big, being in this world or remain-ing in the other world (or remaining in anyother previous state). Here or there, indeci-sion, “should I return to the unified state orshould I separate?” “Will I create bound-aries or will I have them blurred?” Rem-edies such as Cann-i, Urt, Ficus and Quercusare characteristic to this column. The strug-gle and lessons are still in the territory ofthe feminine quality.

In the Third Column (The Hero), there is astrong and intensive battle to separate fromthe feminine-maternal quality that thoughbefore gave life, is now perceived as stran-gling and limiting. Expressed as a struggleto separate from anything that appears“controlling”, the developing Ego fights forits individuality: with the characteristicstatement: “I want to do it my way”. Char-acteristic remedies are the various Cacti.

In the Fourth Column (Nurturing andMa-turity), the maternal element is attainingmaturation. After the previous columnʼsjourney in the feminine element, the indi-viduation process reaches a stage where itnecessitates gaining equanimity: an abilityto nourish or be nourished, provide, giveor take without being belittled for it. Thelesson obtained is maturity of the maternalquality, an ability to give or receive yet keepyour separate individual identity. Imbal-ance at this final maternal column wouldbe expressed as mother/daughter issues,family issues, complications related tomotherhood and elements of abandonmentand dependency. We shall often see over-responsibility for the family, anxiety aboutfamily matters and carrying the burden offamily, which sets the ground for exhaus-tion of personal energy, fatigue and backpains. Eating and digestive disorders willoften ensue. Typical remedies are Bamb,Sacc-a, Trit, Cypr, Thea, Choc, Bry, Brass,Sin-a.

In the Fifth Column (The Other), the Ego isalready solid and constructed. In order tocontinue its development, the Ego must at-tend fully the lessons of the masculinequality, which creates boundaries, rulesand separation, giving purpose and direc-tion. By the masculine borders, the Ego isenabled to realize what is apart from him-self, to separate from what is not himself –and thus come tomeet the other, as an indi-vidual by itself. This separation allows ama-ture relationship to be created, so that iswhy the subject of relationship is of utmostimportance, especially in its beginning (i.e.,the Rose family). Later on the emphasisturns to the expression and fulfilment ofoneʼs role outside the family, to doing andacting. The split of the masculine from thefeminine element is the strongest issuehere, causing rigidity, stiffness, and in theend (like in the Conium family) to drynessand suppression of the feminine, emotionallevel. Relationship will be an issue in thebeginning of the column, later to be shiftedto suppression of the heart and relation-ships, competition, work, duties, rules, reli-gion and rigidity. Prominent remedies areRose, Crat, Anac, Rhus-t and Con.

In the Sixth Column (The Group), onemeets the world at large, stands up to it,fights with it, conquers oneʼs place and de-fines oneʼs place in it. The sixth column fitsour time: an age of individuality that vergeson egotism. Here the feminine and mascu-line had not recovered from the split, thusfighting amongst themselves, always on

ColumnsThe columns present the 10 botanicalSubclasses of the table, portraying atransformative journey of differentiation,separation, independence and individua-tion, while aspiring toward freedomfrom the Ego boundaries. The “Ego” istransported from a state of oneness, fromthe whole, indistinctive “Self”, towardsformation and realization as an individu-al Ego – preparing to shed its Ego layeragain, wiser than before. From unity toindividuation and back to unity again.The journey is initiated by contendingwith the feminine element. Once the les-sons are learned, separation and a splitfrom the feminine element occur, thestruggle shifts, and the Ego has to facethe masculine element. Gaining the mas-culine elementʼs experience and lessonsallows departure from the Ego closureand progression toward interaction anda relationship with “the other” and withthe world at large. From union and one-ness to a differentiated Ego, now able tobe part of the outer world, to cooperateand unite again, yet retain its distinctive-ness and unique presence.

In the developmental journey as present-ed by the columns, the human soul as-

pires to acquire awareness, conscious-ness, identity and uniqueness, subse-quently returning to the source, this timethough as a conscious part of thewhole, awitness of creationʼs wondrous harmony.

The Columnsʼ attributes are looselylinked to C.G. Jungʼs stages of develop-ment of the Ego. More about that inWon-drous Order, the systematic table of plantremedies.

RowsThe Rows present large botanical groupsdescribing levels of development andmaturation within each column, begin-ning with pre-birth and proceeding withinfancy, childhood, adolescence maturityand finally old age.

Rowsʼ attributes are based on Erik Erik-sonʼs human development stages [2].

IntersectionsMeeting points of rows and columns:Each column presenting as a stage of Egoseparation and individuation progressesaccordingly, expressed within itselfthrough nine levels of readiness and ma-turity, presented by the rows.

guard, causing the intra-relationship to bedifficult and physical infertility at times.Also the need of the now fully developed

Ego to display itself, prove oneʼs worth andfind oneʼs place in society can escalate to aclash with the world. Physically this can be

expressed as allergies or a tendency to getworms: any other thing that violates oneʼsboundaries or is even perceived to do it.

On the one hand it has over sensitivity tothe worldʼs impressions, on the other handit shows ambition and aggression: “the de-veloped Ego fights back”. The sixth columnexpresses a battle to function within agroup, while yet maintaining oneʼs hard-earned individuality. Prominent remediesare Verat, Lil-t in the Monocots and Bell,Stram, Coff, Chin, Nux-v, Ign, Menth, Abrot,Cham and Arn – in the Dicots.

This is the end of our journey, and, perhaps,a preparation for the seventh stage, whereall will be returned to the unified state,keeping a complete awareness of theuniqueness that will have been attained.

Development across the ColumnsAll columns are divided by levels of devel-opment – The rows (which follow E. Erik-sonʼs levels of development [2]). The rowsexpress the lesson of each column, initiat-ing the journey at a juvenile and unpre-pared state, evolving to maturity and even-tually growing old and ending. Priming it-self to begin the next step in the journey.

The columns are constructed according toJungian developmental stages and Kabbal-

istic lore. The human journey toward ac-quiring awareness finds its parallel in anumber of developmental sequences: thedevelopmental stages of the minerals, theprogress of the history of humanity, thefirst six chakras and the six first days of cre-ation. Like a gigantic fractal, theworld dem-onstrates its patterned rules of creation inevery aspect of life, all in a wondrous order.

Wondrous Order book and schemaThe Table of Plants cannot entirely be ex-plained in one article, the above is only theessence, a short portrayal, but the informa-tion perceived through the plant tableschema can be easily validated by beingcompared to oneʼs knowledge of remediesand cases.

An extensive description and much moreinformation is available in my book “Won-drous Order”. Sadly, for the time being, thebook is only available in Hebrew. However,it is in the final stages of translation intoEnglish so it should be published in a fewmonthsʼ time.
