SINUMERIK 840Di can offer you muchmore. Of special interest is the levelof integration of the SINUMERIK fam-ily. NC and PLC functions, operatorfunctions and machine data are com-patible between, say, a SINUMERIK840D and a SINUMERIK 840Di, andthe relevant NC and PLC programsrun on both systems. And since thesystem is so open, the software ap-plications can also be used on bothsystems. SINUMERIK 840Di is part ofthe automation environment ofSIMATIC® and SIMODRIVE®.

Distributed configuration withPROFIBUS-DPThere is a clearly discernible trendtowards distributed systems. Anotherimportant feature of the SINUMERIK840Di is PROFIBUS-DP with MotionControl. This is, after all, the uniformfieldbus for drives and I/O and allowsdistributed configuration of the entiresystem. Such a configuration providesthe advantage of being able to installdrive units and components, such asI/O modules for on/off signals, in thevicinity of the machine. In this way,you can reduce the area needed forthe control cabinet and you can makereductions in wiring overhead.

In the basic version, the hardware ofthe SINUMERIK 840Di comprises theindustrial PC and an interface boardwith integral hardware PLC, the MCIboard. You can choose between twoPC variants, depending on the appli-cation. The first is the PCU 50, a rack-mounted PC with shallow installationdepth. The rugged steel housing withunder-pressure ventilation has a harddisk with specially mounted shockprotection. In addition, there is a num-ber of interfaces for the most variedrequirements. There is an optionalexternal 3.5” diskette drive as well asmemory expansion.

The second variation is the PCU 70with greater installation volume toaccommodate several PC cards.

Everything on-board for optimalcommunicationsThe MCI board is a PCI plug-in card.This module comprises an integralSIMATIC S7 315-2DP PLC-CPU as wellas interfaces for MPI (multi-point in-terface) and PROFIBUS-DP. The 840Diis connected to the drives and theI/O via the PROFIBUS-DP interface.The SIMODRIVE 611 universal andSIMODRIVE POSMO can additionallybe connected as the digital drive sys-tem. When using the ADI4 interfacemodule (Analog Drive Interfacefor 4 axes), analog drives such asSIMODRIVE 611 can be used.And the SIMATIC DP ET 200 modulerange is available for the I/O. Options for user-friendlyhandlingThe MPI interface of the MCI boardprovides flexibility with regard to de-vice connections. It is used for optio-nal connection of a machine controlpanel, a hand-held operator/pro-gramming device or an external pro-gramming device for the SIMATIC S7PLC. Also optionally available is an MCIboard extension. You can connect fourhigh-speed digital I/Os, two measur-ing pulse sensors and two electronichand-wheels via this board.
