FLOTTWEG – the company
FLOTTWEG machines for a clean environment
Until today, FLOTTWEG has
manufactured and sold thou-
sands of centrifuges and
hundreds of belt presses
worldwide. FLOTTWEG
products are well received in
the mining, petrochemical,
chemical, pharmaceutical,
food, and manufacturing
industries as well as in the
environmental area like
treatment of waste water or
oil sludge.
FLOTTWEG is a worldwide
leading manufacturer of sedi-
mentation centrifuges. The
company was founded in 1932
and started to develop and
manufacture decanter cen-
trifuges (solid-bowl scroll
centrifuges) in the 1950s. Over
the years, FLOTTWEG has
gained considerable expertise
in many solid-liquid separa-
tion applications. FLOTTWEG’s
current product line comprises
solid-bowl scroll centrifuges,
disk stack centrifuges, belt
presses and systems for
capacities from pilot plant to
large industrial installations.

Solid-liquid separation
these simple methods is the
separation by gravity settling,
i. e., sedimentation by gravity
on one hand as well as
mechanical pressing on the
other hand. Using centrifuges,
gravity is replaced by centrifu-
gal force. In today’s centri-
fuges this centrifugal force
Since antiquity, mankind has
been making use of mechani-
cal separation for wine clarifi-
cation, milk skimming and gold
washing. Characteristic of
generates up to ten thousand
times the force of gravity.
Separation using centrifuges
is performed faster and more
efficiently than via gravity
sedimentation. The pressing
principle is performed using
modern filter presses and
centrifuges.
In many processes, mechani-
cal separation is responsible
for product quality, production
efficiency and environmental
compatibility. Mechanical
separation processes are
found in practically all industri-
al sectors, such as food pro-
cessing, chemical, pharmaceu-
tical, biotechnology, metal
processing, and environmental
protection.
Modern centrifuges have many
advantages compared to
other mechanical separation
processes:
compact design
sealed construction to avoid
odor emissions and product
contamination
ease of handling through
continuous, automated
operation
no need for expenditure of
filter media or filter aids, etc.
FLOTTWEG has developed
solid-bowl scroll centrifuges
such as DECANTERS,
SEDICANTERS®, TRICANTERS®
and SORTICANTERS® as well as
DISK STACK CENTRIFUGES
for many different applications.
FLOTTWEG BELT PRESSES
complete FLOTTWEG’s prod-
uct line. In contrast to the centri-
fuges the solid-liquid separation
is performed via filtration and
mechanical pressing. Compared
with other filtration methods, the
advantage of the belt press is
the continuous operation.

FLOTTWEG DECANTERS are
used for continuous separation
of suspended solids from liquids,
clarification of liquids, classifi-
cation of fine pigments, etc.
FLOTTWEG provides a broad
range of decanter sizes, from
pilot scale or small production
up to industrial scale with
capacities with product of

FLOTTWEG’s range of
SEDICANTER® sizes includes
capacities with product up to

FLOTTWEG TRICANTER®
FLOTTWEG TRICANTERS®
enable three-phase separation
with simultaneous separation
of two immiscible liquids with
different densities and one
solid phase, provided that the
liquids have a different density
and the solid phase is the
heaviest phase. Construction
and function are similar to the
decanter. The most important
difference is the separate
discharge of the two liquid
phases.
FLOTTWEG’s TRICANTER size
range is from pilot scale or
small production up to industri-
al scale with capacities with
product of 80 m3/h (350 gallons
per minute).

FLOTTWEG SORTICANTER®
FLOTTWEG SORTICANTER® are
specialized horizontal decanter
centrifuges for the continuous
separation of 2 solid phases with
different densities from a liquid.
The process is assisted by a
carrier liquid with a specific
gravity that is between the
densities of the two solid
streams to be separated.
FLOTTWEG’s range of
SORTICANTER® sizes is up to
1 000 kg/h solids, dependent on
the properties of the feed.

FLOTTWEG DISK STACK CENTRIFUGES
Disk stack centrifuges with self
cleaning bowl are used for clari-
fying and 3-phase separation
of liquid-solid suspensions. Clari-
fying is to separate suspended
solids from liquids (2 phases).
3-phase separation is to
separate two immiscible liquids
and solids simultaneously.
FLOTTWEG recently devel-
oped the AC series of disk
stack centrifuges. They are
equipped with the SoftShot®
discharge system and feature
an accurate partial discharge
and smooth operation.
FLOTTWEG’s product range
for disk stack centrifuges
comprises several sizes and
includes capacities from below
1 m3/h (5 gallons per minute)
up to 85 m3/h (370 gallons per
minute).

FLOTTWEG BELT PRESSES
FLOTTWEG BELT PRESSES are
used for the continuous separa-
tion of liquid from different solid-
liquid mixtures.
In some processes they enable
an advanced dewatering of the
solids phase from a decanter.
Characteristic for FLOTTWEG
BELT PRESSES is the entire
construction in stainless steel.
This provides high hygienic
standard and long term durabili-
ty. FLOTTWEG BELT PRESSES
include an efficient, well thought
out design with easy accessibili-
ty for operation and cleaning.
A pneumatic belt-control system
provides for reliable operation
with minimum manpower.
FLOTTWEG’s product range for
belt presses comprises several
sizes and includes capacities
from 1 up to 40 tons per hour

wedge zone
L-profiled roller

linear/peripheral pressurepipes with high pressure
spray nozzles
Via a feed box the product is
spread continuously and
uniformly on the lower belt. In
the wedge zone the upper belt
exerts a constantly increasing
surface pressure on the prod-
uct, thus building up a stable
filter cake. In the pressing
zone, the dewatering process
begins in the first stage via the
L-profiled roller which pro-
vides a quick discharge of the
separated liquid to both sides.
In a second stage the product
is pressed via multiple press
rollers with decreasing roller
diameters. By the alternating
pressure and shear stress, the
product is dewatered quickly
to an optimum. As an option,
there are rollers available for
linear and peripheral pres-
sure for further optimization of
the machine’s efficiency.
In order to achieve a consis-
tently high pressing capacity,
the belts are cleaned continu-
ously using pipes with high
pressure spray nozzles.

FLOTTWEG SYSTEMS
In order to operate centrifuges
and belt presses some addi-
tional components are often
required such as control units,
pumps, heat exchangers,
skids and enclosed containers.
If required, FLOTTWEG
SYSTEMS combine all these
components in a unit ready for
connection.
For oil recovery from residues
containing hydrocarbons
FLOTTWEG provides
DECANTER and TRICANTER®
SYSTEMS including pumps,
oil suction unit, intermediate
tanks, flocculant dosage,
control unit, etc.
There are FLOTTWEG
SYSTEMS for a broad range
of applications. FLOTTWEG
SYSTEMS are available skid
mounted on one or multiple
platforms or as container units.
For the extraction of premium
juices FLOTTWEG provides
complete lines of fruit process-
ing to juice producers. The
FLOTTWEG multi-stage press-
ing process with extraction in
an intermediate tank provides
high juice quality and efficient
