Many members of PGS-MN have visited Poland, either self-guided or on tours. We think that those who areconsidering such a trip might benefit from the experiences ofthose who have been there. refu, xe do[rvrw i[;-',,iJ,t#f; f;: fii;tr i;;i:;i t: ;'fil];;,First of all, I was very pleased with the prompt and

Kashubian researchI always read with interest the PGS-MN Newsletter.

I am impressed with the hard work put into it and lookforward to receiving it. Please keep up the good work.ln the latest issue (Winter 2000-01, p.6) a letter fromScott Writz raised my interest.

Mr. Writz was inquiring atter the sumame WRYCAtiom Berentfi(reis Berent of West Prussia. It was notedthat the town is now known as Koscierzna.lt was alsonoted that searches there might reveal that the surnamehe was looking for might well be from the surroundingrural area.

I have been working on the surname WREZA in thesame Gdansk area. In my search I had the opportunityto cr)rrespond with Adeline Sopa at 2711 DanbarDrive, Green Bay WI 54313-7002. She advised methat she had no direct knowledge of the name but wasaware that a common name in central Wisconsin wasWRYCZA and those that she knew had origins in theSuleczyno and Stezyca parishes in the Gdansk area.Looking a map shows both of these are close to Kos-cierzna.

A similar letter to Shirley Connolly, 21 GranvilleAve, Ottawa, Ont. KIY OM5, resulted in the informa-tion that she had come across the name WRYZA in theparishes of Lesno and Lipusz. These too are in theCdansk area. She adds that it is a common Kashubianname. I also find it interesting that in a search of thesurname index featured by PGS-MN at the MGS"Branching Out" meeting reveals that the Wreza sur-nanre is particular to the Gdansk area with abc:utZ1listings in 1990.

I would apprcciate if you would forward this infor-maticrn to Mr Witz.I hope it is of some help to him. Iwould also appreciate if he would watch out tbr theWrcza sumame in his search. It is likely there is somec()nnection. My surname came over around 1875 andsettled in Gilman area of central Minnesota.

thorough review of the MATROS surname throughoutPoland. But, I was absolutely ovcrwhelmed whcn yousent the email telling of finding their home parish atFalkowice. I am most grateful.

The baptismal dates match their birth dates closely(I had their binh dates previously). Frank Matros wasborn on October 4th, 1866. He was baptized a daylater. The same pat0em is true for Magdalena Jacubik. She was bom on lily 22,1868, and was baptized a daylater.

Until your email, I had hit nothing but blank walls.A certificate of citizenship for my grandparents did notindicate the place of birth. Death certificates had aspace that asks about their place of birth. But all theysaid was "Germany." No town or parish.

Again, my most sincere thanks!

Translation GuideI am having difficulty translating a microfilm from

the LDS tibrary on the Polish parish where my grand-father was born. It is in paragraph form and very hardto decipher. A suggestion was made to me from some-one on the Polish Forum thar the book, A GenealogistsTranslntion Guide to Polish Documents, by Shea and

Hoftman might be helpf'ul. Are you familiar with thisbook and if so is it worth the $30'?

Also, will I be able to extend the rental on thismicrofilm at the LDS library'?

Newsletter [Winter 2000-0I l, pp.8-9):My husband and I were inlolved in a prtiject spon-

sored by the Morrison County Historical Societywhere they had us locate each ancl every grave in acemetery and record the marker type, size and i\LLthe infbrmation that appeared on the gravestone andthe location of the grave within each cemetery, Thiswas done so that all this information could be put oncomputer and indexed tbr use by the public. We re-corded 3 cemeteries for this project "[ or 5 years ago.So the project could very well be completed by now.

We recorded St. John's, St. Joseph's and [.one Pineall in Morrill, MN, Morris<.rn County. St. Michael'sin Buckman is in Morrison Co. so it is also proLrablyrecorded. We emailed this intbrmation to Mr. LaMottealong with the address: Morrison County HistoricalSociety, 2151 Lindbergh Drive, Little Falls, MN56345. Phone (320)632-4C[7. We are passing thisinformation along to you in the hope that it will alsobenefit others.

During the 1990s, an assortment of books on Polishand Polish-American genealogy was published. Ofthem all, Rosemary Chorzempa's fine Polish Roots(Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company, I 993)was the only true general reference, all of the othersrvere specialized as to function (translation guide, gazetteer or gazetteer aid, etc.), locale (by Partition orAmerican subject), or both. As Polish Roots went intoreprinting without revision, however, we needed some-thing more for the next stage of our general research. The maturing of Polish-American genealogical socie-ties, the expanded tilming programs of the LDS Fami-ly History Library, the increasing interest in geneakrgyin post-communist Poland itsell and the evolution ofsecondary sources on the World Wide Web all criedfor a guide to introduce them to researchers who'dgotten beyond fledgling status.

We don't quite have that comprehensive advanced-Ievel guide yet. However, we do have something that's,.Jamed close, and just in time for the true millennium.Jonathan Shea and William F. "Fred" Hoffman are twoo1' the most prominent Polish-American genealogists.Among their many joint and individual publicationswas Following the Paper Trail, an aid to translatingdocuments in the major ianguages relevant to genea-logical research within the boundaries of the PolishCommonwealth. Rather than revise that work withinits original one-book format, Fred and Jon decided toexpand it to tbur sepamte volumes, each to cover oneof the languagcs, and to get into more and differentsorts of genealogical data sources. Logically enough, the first covers the Polcs' native tongue.

were ubiquitous in the Russian Partition. These arevery helpful to beginner and experienced genealogistalike, building on prior treatrnents and offering newangles. As one would expect from Fred Hoffman, deanof American translators from Slownik geograficznykrdlesiwa polskiego, there is a long guide to thatsourceo the principal 19th-centtry gazetteer of thePolish lands of Europe. It collates the best content ofFred's many articles in the publications of the PolishGenealogical Society of America.

But In Their Words goes beyond those expectedtopics, to include other genealogical sources little-heeded or not reccntly covered in the literature. I wasable to use the volume to great advantage in translatinga Polish-lamguage obituary from a Wisconsin newspa-per, and in puzzling out the liactured Polish spellingsin gravestone inscriptions that I had transcribed at St.Isidore's Cemetery in Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota. There are guides to church histories and directoriespublished in Poland, consular records, passports, per-sonal lettcrs, and military documents. There are intro-ductions to major Germerr- and Russian-language gaz-cttcers, tor thcir material on lands that were populatedby Polcs.

He marriedJohanna about 1884 and had a daughter, Maria, sup-posedly bom 1885 in North Prairie MN. They settledin the Gilman area of Benton County. Johanna died1894. Peter rema:ried Elizabeth SNYDER. Both areburied in St. Anna, Steams County. I would like anyinformation on the Goltz and Strjszek families, espe-cially on Johanna. Also are there any booklets, etc. onNorth Prairie 1850-1900. Church S ponsore d B ride s

We all have family stories that contain little "snip-pets" of information that make us want more. For anumber of years.I have been seeking more informationon the possibility that the Catholic church may havesponsored women tiom Poland to come to the U.S. tomarry Polish men who had immigrated earlier. I be-came interested in this because my understanding isthat my grcat grandfather's second wil'e was sponsoredby the church. She was quite a bit younger than him,but at an age where she would have been considered a

spinster and not likely to marry. I have been told lhatshe came to St. Paul, Minnesota (about 1907) fromPoland sponsored by the Catholic church.I wrote toPGSA. and both the PGS in Michigan and Wisconsinsome years ago. None of them had information onchurch sponsored brides but all were eager to hear if Iever learned more. I was encouraged when an elderlyrelative told me his mother-in-law had been sponsoredby a Lutheran church to come to the U.S' fromdermany to find a husband. So I feel this was actuallypractice by some churches. Does anyong else-have anyiamily evidence or information that will verify thispractice'l
