Keynote: “Making Experiential Learning Happen” - Addressing Five Key Factors Which Underpin Experiential Learning. In this interactive keynote session, Professor Race will help participants to identify five factors which underpin experiential learning. These five factors can be addressed purposefully in the design of experiential learning for students. Moreover, students themselves can increase the effectiveness and efficiency (and enjoyment) of their learning by consciously taking ownership of how these five factors operate in their learning. Excerpts from Race’s 2005 book ‘Making Learning Happen’ (London: Sage Publications) will be used as handout materials at the conference.

Topic: Integrating Assessment with Learning Professor Brown will facilitate one of the Experiential Learning Workshops “ Integrating Assessment with Learning ”. Assessment has a huge impact on student learning. Students derive cues from the kinds of tasks we give them and act accordingly in their study behaviour, treating marks like money (How much is this task worth? How much effort should I spend on this?). Assessment design is therefore crucial to ensuring that assignments result in real student learning, and that students spend their time productively. However, too often how we assess students is an afterthought in the design process, and we fall back on tried and tested methods (that are more frequently tried than tested). This highly interactive workshop will enable participants to go back to basics in thinking about assessment and to clarify purposes and practices, so that it becomes fully integrated and constructively aligned with learning.
