Editorial

am very pleased to report that our urgent plea has been answered! We

now have three new committee members, bringing the committee back to

full strength. This is wonderful news! The future of the Rye and District

Association now looks healthy. Long may this continue, so we can plan and

organise activities and events that are interesting and enjoyable, yet raise

funds for our local National Trust properties.

The title page photo was taken at the committee meeting on 1 November -

four members were unable to attend, so their individual photos are shown

beneath.

And now - welcome to your Winter-Spring Newsletter! It is full of many

interesting activities. Please do join us in as many as possible.

I do hope you enjoy reading the Newsletter. It is your Newsletter - please feel

free to email or phone me with any feedback - comments - articles - or any

ideas you may have for trips or events.

May I remind you that our latest Newsletter is always available on-line, as is

our current Events List. So, you should never be at a loss as to 'what's on',

even if you lose your paper copy! You can easily find them on the NT website

page for our Rye & District Association:

www.nationaltrust.org.uk/features/rye-and-district-association

Finally, very best wishes to each and every one of you, for the

religious and festive season of Christmas & New Year.

Chairman’s Report Autumn 2018

ow things can change in a matter of months!

In the last news letter, I had to announce a

severe warning that our Association could fold if

we did not have a response to our pleas for new

committee members. We had three vacancies to

fill. I am delighted to report that all three

vacancies have been filled and I am sure the

existing committee members will join me in giving

a very warm welcome to Dee Williams, Maggie

Wharton and Keith Sellens, who responded to the

urgent appeal. Dee is our new Membership

Secretary, Maggie now becomes our Outings Organiser and Keith, our

Bookings Manager for the outings. You will find the details of the new

committee members on the inside front cover of this edition.

A great day was had by all at our outing to Standen House in September, I say

this with tongue in cheek, as the day was unfortunately marred by an

unfortunate incident. Ann Rolfe was about to enter the coach on the

homeward bound journey when she fell and hurt her arm badly. Louise

accompanied her to hospital where it was proven that she had broken the

upper arm in two places. I am pleased to report that Ann is making a good

recovery and hopefully will be back to full strength very soon.

Our annual ‘Meet and Greet’ took on a different format this year. Nevertheless

it was a resounding success, and we recruited several new members there.

Also, Andrew Dyer, from Winchelsea attended and we presented him with a

cheque. (see Review on page 12)

Lovat Bonnet again organised a theatre outing. On 20 October we were

treated to ‘Rain Man’, a very thought provoking performance based on the

Oscar winning film that stared Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. It is such a

delight attending these theatre outings. All the work and research is done for

you and you get picked up and delivered to the theatre door and when the

performance is over, picked up again and delivered home, what can be

better? We look forward to the next theatre outing Lovat!

The energetic walking group have been as active as ever. Led by Phil and Phil

Maynard many parts of our beautiful countryside have been explored by this

enthusiastic group. I know the numbers enjoying this activity have been

H

steadily increasing, it’s a great credit to Phil that our members enjoy these

special rural outings. Although I am unable to take part, I do have very positive

‘feedback’.

I understand that Mrs Phil is to undergo surgery at some point in the future, we

wish her well and look forward to seeing her back to full fitness.

We have had our first lecture of the winter season. As usual, Maggie Brown

has a superb series of lectures lined up for us. Maggie works so hard in

researching these lectures, and believe it or not, is even planning our

Christmas 2019 entertainment!!

Speaking of Christmas, we have our Christmas party on 6 December which

this year includes a fun quiz. Further information is given later in this

Newsletter.

The season of ‘Goodwill’ is upon us, and so I would like to wish you all A

VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A HEALTHY NEW YEAR.

Marion Brunt

Treasurer's Report

e currently have a balance of £4,559 in the account following the

donation of £1,000 to Winchelsea (see Meet & Greet Review page 12)

and £1,000 to Bateman's (towards restoration of the papier-mâché Globes in

Kipling's study, but yet to be presented to them)

Also, we have allocated £2,000 to Smallhythe to complete restoration of the

chairs. This will then leave us with a balance of £2,559.

At the back of the Newsletter, is a report on our donations over the last ten

years. The donations planned for 2019 would bring the total to over thirty-one

thousand pounds - an amazing achievement from a relatively small

Association.

Fun Golf Day Review (31 August)

lovely sunny day greeted the twenty-eight players who took part in the

annual Fun Golf Day on 31 August. As usual, the event was held at

Sedlescombe Golf Club, where the ground staff provided the players with a

superb course on which to execute their skills.

Although entries were considerably down this year, the golf was of the usual

high standard with some excellent results achieved, and skilfully recorded

once again by our photographer Laton Frewen.

The ‘Halfway House’, manned by Louise, Cathy and Lovat provided players

with a grand selection of goodies to help sustain them for the last nine holes.

The day concluded with an excellent carvery provided by Green’s Restaurant

staff, followed by the prize giving.

Our final profit of £500 was made possible by the generosity of sponsors and

players alike, and a very successful raffle run by Louise and Cathy.

The Results:-

Outing Review: Standen (17 September)

his was a very successful outing, and I am sure all who came along

enjoyed the day. The weather was glorious, a quintessentially British

summer day! So, after touring the house, it allowed us to take full advantage

of strolling through the beautiful grounds (a twelve acre garden plus eighty

acres of estate!), before sitting at the tables on the South Terrace and

admiring the far reaching views across the Sussex countryside. Indeed, some

of us ended the day relaxing in the reclining chairs on the lawn outside the

Barn Cafe (photo below).

On arrival a guide came onto the coach to give us a brief welcome talk, and to

issue us with timed entry tickets, and maps of the grounds. Luckily we had

time to enjoy a coffee in the Barn Cafe before beginning our tour. I must say,

the Barn Cafe provided excellent refreshment, and we enjoyed a good lunch

later in the day.

The Arts and Crafts style house, designed by Philip Webb, was a joy to

explore. Of particular interest were the William Morris patterned wallpapers

and furnishings (see photos), and the early design of light bulbs (see photo).

Also, it was fascinating to learn about the Beale family, who had the house

built in the 1920's and lived there for several generations.

There was so much to see and enjoy - and Lynda and I look forward to

returning on our own to revisit the house and explore new parts of the estate.

Sadly, as many of you will know, Anne Rolfe, who was leading our visit, had a

nasty accident just prior to boarding the coach to leave. She fell and injured

her right shoulder. Subsequent X-rays revealed two breaks. However, the

good news is that she is well on the way to full recovery. John Wright

Meet & Greet Review (6 October)

ur annual ‘Meet and Greet’ took on a different format this year.

We held a tea party in Brede Village Hall where delicious cakes were

provided by your committee and were eagerly consumed by all present.

We were also pleased to welcome Andrew Dyer, Winchelsea Area Ranger.

He gave us a very interesting talk on the work being undertaken by the staff

and volunteers of the Winchelsea National Trust, who maintain the land

owned by the National Trust in that area. The committee then presented

Andrew with a cheque for £1000 to help finance the purchase of a Tree

Popper (a machine for extracting tree roots), Chain-saw, and Field scope.

(We were very pleased to subsequently learn that Andrew had put a

photograph of the cheque presentation on Face Book. Good publicity is

always welcome!)

The event proved to be very successful and enjoyed by all - and we also

recruited several new members, which was wonderful!

Theatre Review: Rain Man (20 October)

At the Theatre Royal Brighton

any times a film

screenplay has been

rewritten as a play and

conversely a play has been

adapted for a film. Whichever

the case, the medium has to

stand on its own merits.

In my view the conversion of

Rain Man, the film, into a play

succeeded spectacularly. All credit should go to Dan Gordon, the play writer,

Jonathan O’Boyle, the director, and Bill Kenwright, the producer.

Mathew Horne's performance as Raymond, the autistic savant, was truly

remarkable. He simply became the character. Ed Speleers as Charlie,

Raymond’s self-centred opportunist brother, held the audience’s attention to

the action on the stage brilliantly.

Everyone appreciated a beautiful Autumn day in Brighton and a very

rewarding show.

Theatre Trip: The Lady Vanishes

Churchill Theatre, Bromley, Saturday 30 March, 2:30pm

he Lady Vanishes was one of Alfred Hitchcock’s best loved suspense and

lightly comic films. Bill Kenwright Productions has created a new adaption

for the stage with actors from the highly successful Agatha Christie Company

and the Classic Thriller Company.

Socialite Iris is travelling home to England on a train when an accident

introduces her to the mild-mannered Miss Froy. After her travelling companion

suddenly disappears, Iris is perplexed to find that all the other passengers

deny ever having seen her. With the help of urbane musician Max, she turns

detective, and together they become drawn into a complex web of European

intrigue, as they try to solve the mystery of why the lady vanished.

As usual, we will arrive in Bromley in good time for a stroll around the town

and some lunch.

The combined cost per person for both the theatre and coach seats is £45 per

person (including coach gratuities). We have to pay the theatre

significantly before the show, so early bookings are greatly appreciated.

2019 Spring Lunch

The Cooden Beach Golf Club - Saturday 27 April 2019

o join us for our Annual Lunch!

After a very successful 2018 Spring Lunch at the new venue of the

Cooden Beach Golf Club, we have decided to return again in 2019.

The food was very good, the staff were very helpful and there were no hold

ups at the bar. We shall again be in the first floor restaurant with lovely views

across the golf course, and also a convenient stair lift which proved very

useful for some of us last time!

The address is: Cooden Sea Road, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, TN39 4TR.

It is approximately 13 miles from Brede Village Hall, a 25 minute drive.

We have been able to agree a really delicious menu, and for the same price

as last year, namely £26.50pp (including tea/coffee and gratuities).

A Menu and Booking Form are in the back pages. Please complete the form,

cut off from below the menu, and return as stated on the form.

We shall meet in the bar at 12.30 with the lunch scheduled for 1.00pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity for us all to get together and enjoy good food

and conversation in a really attractive setting. We all look forward to seeing

you there!

Outings: The Royal Pavilion Brighton

Tuesday 11 June 2019

he Royal Pavilion holds a very special place in our hearts. It is romantic,

opulent and flamboyant. It belongs to an era of privilege for the few and

drudgery for the many.

Do join us for a visit to this extraordinary building, including the recently

restored sumptuous Saloon.

The building was begun in 1787 as a seaside palace for the Prince Regent

who later became George IV. The palace was extended by John Nash and

has been restored to reflect the fashion for Indian architecture of that time. It

was a safe place for George’s lavish entertainment away from the restrictions

of London. Here he hosted banquets, gambling and much more!

We plan to have an audio tour so that we can each progress at our own pace

in exploring the Pavilion.

There is a tea room that provides light lunches and cream teas, and also a

café in the garden which has been restored to Nash’s original Regency vision.

Cost per person (including coach, entry, audio tour & coach gratuities):

£40.00. (Refreshments at own expense).

Please help us by booking as soon as you can, using the Booking Form in

the back pages.

Lectures for 2018/2019

ll lectures start at 2:00pm at Brede Village Hall.

Thursday 6 December: "Christmas Celebration Tea

with a Fun Quiz"

This year we are going to be

holding our usual Christmas Tea

with all the usual Christmas Fare,

but including a Fun Quiz. So get

those thinking paper hats on, and

come and have some fun. (note:

there is a small extra charge for

catering).

2019 Lectures

Thursday 17 January: Dave Clarke - "Three Castles and an Ironmasters

House"

David is an author and a member of The

Ramblers and the Long Distance Walkers

Association. His talk will take us on a walk

past Bodiam, Sissinghurst and Scotney

Castles and Batemans. Along the way we

will discover the rich history of the High

Weald. This is a talk for walkers who love to

get muddy and for those who prefer to stay

dry!

Thursday 21 February: Andrew Ashton -

"Rubens with Jokes - the Art of Beryl

Cook"

Andrew returns for our AGM, to give his talk

on Beryl Cook. We enjoyed a very interesting

talk from him last year, on Banksy. Art lovers

and others, should come along for what I’m

sure will be a very informative and

entertaining talk.

A

- 18 -

Thursday 21 March: Sian Trevellian - "The First

Women Doctors"

Sian will give a talk about these incredible women,

one of whom was born in Hastings, and another who

died there. Sian qualified as an engineer and spent

her working life in technical roles, which would have

been unheard of but for those brave women who

fought for the vote and equality. This, following the

centenary of some women getting the vote, is our

tribute to them.

Thursday 18 April: Joseph Whelan -

"People of Nymans"

Joe is the Head Gardener at Nymans,

which is one of the National Trust

principal gardens. It was the home of

the Messell family. Joe’s talk will focus

on the people and gardeners that have

contributed to making Nymans the

garden it is today.

Thursday 16 May: Martin Lloyd - "Passports, Assassins, Traitors and

Spies"

As it is likely that the British passports issued

after October 2019 will again be the iconic

blue and gold, it seemed a good time to

welcome Martin back to our group again. This

time he will be telling us about passport

stories from history, showing why changes

were brought about regarding regulations and

design.

Admission is £4 for members and £5 for visitors, but the charge includes

refreshments! However, for the Christmas Event, the charge will be £8.50

Walking Group

Interesting facts

y the time you read this we will have undertaken our last walk of 2018

and for us that's eight full years of organising and leading the group. 2019

sets some challenges but more of that later. I decided to take a look back at

the last eight years which seem to have flown past. During that time we have

organised seventy-three walks of which just three have been cancelled; two

due to heavy rain and one because I was ill. The furthest north and east we

have reached is Walmer and the furthest west the Seven Sisters Country

Park. We have visited sixty-six different pubs/lunch locations of which sadly

five are now permanently closed. There are two pubs we have visited twice

(both called the Red Lion) which are at Hooe and Brede and we have visited

the Rose and Crown in Beckley three times. I've calculated that we have

walked in excess of 500 miles and assuming an average of 14,000 steps per

walk, we are only one walk away from completing one million steps!!! The

body is an amazing thing...

So on to 2019. Those of you taking part will have noticed over the last couple

of years that the group has become much larger resulting in the walks taking

longer and we have already moved the start time forward thirty minutes.

Although still pleasurable, organising and leading the walks has become a lot

more difficult. To add to this as some of you will know Mrs Phil is to undergo

surgery to her heel at the end of January with recovery time uncertain but

unlikely to be less than two months and probably a lot longer before she can

B

walk any distance. Unfortunately we are therefore unable to carry on as

normal. Despite this I have pencilled in all the dates for 2019 but for now have

organised just the first two. Along with my still mobile assistant I will be leading

the January walk and one of our group, Keith Sellens, has kindly agreed to

lead the February walk. Beyond that our plans are uncertain but we hope to be

able to complete the full programme and if anyone feels able to step in and

help please do let me know. Everyone will be kept informed through the

regular walking group emails. See you all in January.

2019 Walks

All Walks now start at 10.00am and are approximately five to six miles

followed by lunch. There is a £2 charge for each walk which includes entry to

both the 'Guess the Steps' competition and the lunchtime Trivia Quiz, and of

course with luck you may recoup your investment!

1. Tuesday Jan 15th Hidden Hastings - exploring Alexandra Park and

its reservoirs, Castle Hill and Bohemia with lunch half way round on

the seafront. Hastings is hilly! Meet beside the park on the main road

into Hastings the A2101 St Helens Rd just past the junction with

Parkstone Road where there is ample parking.

2. Thursday Feb 14th Meet at the Ferry Inn at Oxney. A circular walk

via Appledore and along the Royal Military Canal. Mainly flat except

for a climb up to Stone.

3. Tuesday Mar 19th

4. Thursday Apr11th

5. Tuesday May 14th

6. Thursday June 20th

7. Tuesday Sep 17th

Data Protection Requirements

any of you, if not all, will be aware of the Data Protection Act.

This, from time to time, explicitly impacts our lives – sometimes

irritatingly. Most of us will have encountered frustration when we seek

information over the telephone but are denied because of ‘Data Protection’.

However, the purpose of the Act is to protect each of us from unwanted or

illegal use of our information – names, addresses, bank accounts and such.

All organisations that collect personal data, no matter how little the data, do

have a responsibility under the Act. The extent of the legal requirement upon

an organisation does depend on the type of organisation and its use of data.

We are a non-profit voluntary organisation and the National Trust advise that

we are not required to formally register with the ICO (Information

Commissioner’s Office) as a Data Controller or Data Processor. However, we

are legally required to take due care of your data and only use it for purposes

of which you are aware and to which you are in agreement.

So, we have now set out a Data Protection Policy. This is on the reverse of the

Membership Form (at the back of the Newsletter) and will be displayed on the

notice board at meetings, on our webpage and also Facebook page.

It is important for each and every one of you, our members, to read this policy.

Hopefully you will find it both acceptable and reassuring.

The amended Membership Form (introduced December 2017) has wording

such that by completing the form you consent to the policy.

Members who joined prior to December 2017 and renewed without completing

the amended form, and who did not consent to the policy, were requested to

contact the Membership Secretary as soon as possible and prior to the AGM

of February 2018. Members who did not contact us before the AGM, to

object, were assumed to consent to the policy.

Members are able to request at any time, reduction or amendment of their

data that we hold. Clearly, if any member requires us to delete/destroy all their

data, then they could no longer be a member of the Association, and would

effectively be asking us to terminate their membership. We sincerely hope

none of our members would demand this!

Finally, on a legal note, new Data Protection legislation came into effect in

May 2018: the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This is an EU

legislation and is essentially a tightening up of the pre-existing UK Data

Protection Act (DPA) of 1998.
