There’s a Learn to Swim class for everyone at the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre
Works UpdateIn spite of the recent wet weather, a major footpath upgrade at Waterloo Road in Macquarie Park has been finished on time and on budget. The projects were undertaken concurrently:• A shared user path for bicycles and
pedestrians was constructed on the northern side between Lane Cove Road and Macquarie Shopping Centre.
• On the southern side, new granite paving was laid between Coolinga Street and Byfield Road.
In addition to constructing the paths, the project also included replacement
of old telecommunications pits, relocation of bus shelters and installation of safety fencing to ensure compliance with Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) standards. The area bordering the paths has also been returfed. The paths have been so well received that they will be extended further over the next 12 months. This project was jointly funded by the City of Ryde, the RMS and the Macquarie Park Levy Fund. It is one of many initiatives that help us to achieve our goal of making our City a City of Connections, where residents, workers
and visitors have the option of safely and conveniently driving, walking or cycling to their destination.
Want to splice through the water like James Magnussen or Stephanie Rice? Or do you just want to beat your own personal best or improve your stroke technique? The Swim School at the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre (RALC) has a class for everyone: babies and kids, teenagers, young people and adults!
Babies and kids
It’s the perfect time to enrol your kids in learn to swim classes, to ensure that they have the skills that they need to stay safe around the water when summer comes. Our Learn to Swim Program provides swimming classes suitable for infants and children of all abilities. The programs are structured to promote water familiarisation, safety, correct stroke technique and personal development within an enjoyable and safe environment.
Our professional and friendly instructors are all AustSwim and CPR qualified and will guide each student from a non-swimmer to a proficient, confident and safe swimmer. Our next session begins on Monday 20 August, so you can harness your kids’ Olympic enthusiasm to inspire them to become better swimmers, just like their favourite champions!
Adolescents and Teenagers‘Teen Active’ is a program for swimmers aged 12 years and over. It’s a fitness class for swimmers who want to improve endurance and fitness, or just swim for fun. This program is perfect for teenagers who want to continue swimming without focusing on competition.‘Teen Active’ classes run for one hour and you have a choice of four different sessions: Mondays at 6.15pm, Tuesdays at 5.30pm, Wednesdays at 5.30pm, Saturdays at 8.00am, 9.45am or 10.45am and Sundays at 8.30am or 10.15am.And for less confident swimmers, we also run beginners and intermediate classes for 10 – 14 year olds.
AdultsHave you always wanted to learn to swim but have been shy about trying? We run beginners and intermediate classes for adults, so you can learn this vital life skill and be ready for pool parties with your family and friends when summer comes!
Classes are a maximum of one instructor: eight adults, so you’ll get the personal attention you need to learn the basics, or to improve your technique and endurance. If you’re not comfortable in a group, private lessons are also available.
An Added BonusEnrol before Monday 20 August and get one class for free!Everyone who enrols in the Learn to Swim program will also receive a booklet with over $90.00 worth of vouchers to spend at the RALC – that’s great family value! And don’t forget that the water temperature at the RALC is a pleasant 29°C all year round, so a Learn to Swim class is actually a great way to escape from the winter weather outside. For further information about our Learn to Swim programs go to www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/ralc or call 8878 5111.

The deal meets market expectations and abides by standard industry practice and regulations.
“The deal does not stack-up” WRONG
Ryde Civic Precinct Good Economic Sense - The Facts
www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/rydecivicprecinct
There will be NO increase of rates to pay for this development.
The developer will have financial obligations to Council to deliver our new community facilities.
The project utilises $40 million worth of infrastructure already built at no cost to Council. It makes full use of the traffic improvements provided to Council from the construction of Top Ryde City shopping centre and will stop rat-running in local streets.
THE FACTS THE ALTERNATIVES
• DoingnothingwillcostCouncilaround$500,000 annually in maintenance until the building fails: this is expected in the near future.
• RefurbishmentwillcostCouncilconsiderablymore (estimated at $39.2 million) than the proposed development with none of the community benefits and NO new facilities. Council would need to borrow funds for no real benefit.
The proposed Ryde Civic Precinct will provide much needed facilities for Ryde at a fraction of the cost of maintaining or refurbishing the existing building. Council would like to correct many misleading statements in the media.
Council is selling around 60% of the site to allow development which will create $79 million of value including new community facilities and a new administration building. Council will retain ownership of these facilities and the land.
WRONG“ Council is ‘giving’ Lend Lease 70 per cent of the land”
Lend Lease is financing the entire development with the option for Council to provide funding fully guaranteed by Lend Lease. This option (if pursued) will benefit Council by $6 million. We reiterate this loan is an option only.
“ Council is acting as a banker, providing a $35 million loan with no financial guarantee”
WRONGCouncil’s maximum cash contribution to the project will be $5.8 million after 10 years.
“ Council is paying $21 million to relocate services and will also pay Lend Lease $8 million for new facilities”
WRONG
DuringthedevelopmentCouncilkeepstitle to the entire site and Lend Lease will provide a corporate guarantee.
WRONG“ Ratepayers lose
if Lend Lease goes bust”

gRAnnY smitH FestivAl ApplicAtionsThe City of Ryde’s biggest and most popular festival is a true community carnival, full of colour, variety, entertainment and good old-fashioned fun.We celebrate the life and legacy of one of our district’s most famous citizens, Maria Ann Smith – aka Granny Smith – who, back in 1868, ‘accidentally’ grew the first batch of green apples that bear her name and are now grown all over the world. The Festival kicks off with the ever-popular street parade, featuring marching bands, dancers, floats and stilt walkers.Throughout the day there will be entertainment by local performing arts groups on six stages around the festival precinct in Eastwood. There are also hundreds of stalls selling everything from food to French linen, exotic plants to African art and much more!
Be Part of the Festival! This year the Granny Smith Festival will take place on Saturday 20 October.Applications are now open for parade participants, stage performers and stallholders. For application forms go to www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/grannysmithfestival or call 9952 8222.Applications and supporting documentation must be returned by Friday 31 August 2012.
