President’s Message

Janice Murphy

Snowflakes will be flying soon as we approach the season of giving. We will be busy with our own preparations for the holidays, but we also have to be aware of the needs of others at this special time of the year. Val Luscott will be making some special deliveries during this Christmas season in the city and the county, and I am sure she and her committee would appreciate the assistance of a few extra elves. Please let her know of your interest.

In December we will be celebrating together at our Christmas luncheon where we will continue to support our theme of Caring and Sharing. Thank you for your continued generosity and support . It is so appreciated when you bring your donations to every luncheon. A thank you to those who volunteer to deliver those donations to their specific destination on behalf of RWTO/OERO after the festivities have ended.

The Initiative Committee’s objective is to create new opportunities for our RWTO/OERO members to participate in group activities. The details can be found on the following pages.

Please take some time to look through the following pages of this RWTO/OERO newsletter so you can make yourself aware of the activity opportunities that you can take part in. There are also informative articles

that will help to keep you up to date on the latest news concerning your Windsor-Essex Branch.

Just a reminder that all members are welcome to attend our Executive meetings . They are held on the second Tuesday of every month with the exception of June and September. We meet at 9:30 a.m. at the WFCU on 2800 Tecumseh Road East ( the corner of Tecumseh Rd and Drouillard Rd). Come join us.

Your Executive wishes each and everyone of you and your families a peaceful and joyous Christmas and Happy Holidays. We also wish for you the sounds of laughter, carols, traditional Christmas stories, and the time to spend with loved ones.

Rewards Incentive Program

Make the choice, to take the chance, to make a change. The objective of the incentive committee is to support our RWTO/OERO theme of Caring and Sharing. Its various activities will create new opportunities for sisterhood by allowing members to participate in group activities, to meet new people, to step beyond their comfort zones and try something new, all while learning more about how RWTO/OERO functions.

Here are some of its exciting ideas:

Reward Cards

You will receive one reward card with five areas that can be punched. One punch on your card will be awarded for each of the initiative activities that you attend. Completed

cards will be placed in a container for a draw which will take place at our spring and winter luncheons. A new card will be issued when your completed card is handed in. Prizes will be announced.

Attendance at any of these activities will equal one punch on your reward card.

assist women and children by giving food, toiletries and money to many community and service groups.

creativity and interaction.

Home Care Insurance Plan which supplements the provincial health plan and is available at a reasonable price.

our $50 annual cost seems reasonable.

we could not offer these benefits without the support of members who keep our RWTO/OERO Branch thriving by renewing their membership every year. Without paid members, we wouldn’t have our Branch and all of the above listed activities would cease to exist.

Thank you to all who have paid their 2016-2017 fees, especially if you paid before November 1st. There is still time to pay your membership fee of $50. Just send your cheque payable to RWTO to Gayle Broad at 2170 Trappers Ave., Windsor, ON N8P 1T3.

If you move or change your phone number or e-mail address, please forward this change to Emy McBride at (519) 945-1380 or [email protected]. This helps to keep branch and provincial records up-to-date.

If you are not renewing your membership this will be your last newsletter. Perhaps in the future, you will rejoin our Branch.

P.S. If anyone knows Kelly Paquette, would you have her contact Gayle Broad at (519) 971-9488 or [email protected]?

Issues and ConcernsPat Wales

Follow the Dream is the theme of Convention 2017. The AGM 2017 convenors would like to build upon that theme with a Follow the Dream in the World of Retirement exhibit that will feature members who have pursued retirement activities entirely outside the field of education.

Brief stories and photographs will be displayed to describe how members have engaged in wide-ranging activities to fulfill their retirement dreams and passions. This could include examples of how members have taken on new careers, challenges or volunteer activities in retirement.

Are there Windsor-Essex members who have followed a dream in retirement? Absolutely!

Any member can submit their own story or that of a fellow RWTO/OERO friend for use at the 2017 provincial convention.

Each submission needs to include:

the member set about to achieve the dream. It can include challenges and obstacles faced.

AGM in Ajax, Ontario in June 2017.The goal is to create an inspiring display at Convention 2017 to honour the creativity, altruism and passion of our members as represented by some of their retirement activities. Please submit Branch member articles to me at the contact below before March 15, 2017.

If You’ve Got It, Use It!

At the September Area 3 Insurance Meeting in Chatham, Bertha Breen, Provincial Insurance Convenor, related the following incident and recommended we pass it on to our members.

A fellow retiree told Bertha she wished to cancel her Manulife Insurance, and when Bertha asked her why, she said she never used it and it was a waste of money every month. Bertha asked whether she had had any surgery or sickness over the years and the woman told her yes, she had had several surgeries, including a hip replacement.

Bertha asked why she had not taken advantage of her Manulife coverage. The woman said she had not even thought of it or looked into it.

Consequently she missed out on the advantages of the insurance, and since it is not retroactive, nothing can be done.

If you have the Manulife Hospital and Home Care Plan, be sure to use it when you can. You might be surprised at the reimbursements you could receive.

If you have any questions about the insurance plan, contact Terry Kennedy or myself.
