INTRODUCTIONRwanda

It is a landlocked Country lying south of the Equator in east-central Africa. The country covers an area of 26,338 square kilometers. It borders Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The country is in the African Great Lakes region and a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth, COMESA, Organisation internationale de la francophonie (OIF), African Union and the East African Community. The current population of Rwanda is 12,798,529 based on Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data (January 2020).

Rwanda has diversified agro-climatic conditions at high, medium and low altitudes; fertile soils; abundant water resources and affordable human resources to support production of quality and competitive horticulture products. Horticulture production in Rwanda is highly distributed in all 30 districts. The four key categories of horticulture produce in Rwanda are vegetables, fruits, Nuts and flowers.

Rwanda’s horticulture has preferential advantage to access markets like the European Union, U.S.A, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the Economic Community of the Great Lakes Countries (CEPGL).

FACTS ABOUT HORTICULTURE SECTOR IN RWANDA

Horticulture production in Rwanda is highly distributed in all 30 districts. The four key categories of horticulture produce in Rwanda are vegetables, fruits, Nuts and flowers.

Key Competitive factors

o Company Registration: The government has a One Stop Center for business registration which takes 6 hours to get business credentials with access through online platform.

o Facilitates negotiations to access land: The government facilitates investors to easy access private land for cultivation. The government has identified private land suitable for flower cultivation that needs expropriation of private activities.

o Subsidies on irrigation: The government provides subsidies of 50% on importation of small scale irrigation equipment. There are sites earmarked by government as irrigated schemes with developed irrigation facilities in the country (Gabiro and ETI).

o Tax incentives for horticultural machinery: The government has a list agricultural machinery and equipment exempted from specific taxes. The government gives a tax holiday of 7 years for investors depending on level of investment and nature of business in the value chain. A preferential corporate income tax rates of 0-15% depending on investment capital3.

o Cold Chain Facilities –The Government offers cost effective cold chain facilities to support exporters in the sector.

o Negotiated Air-Freight Services- The government and the Private Sector Federation (PSF) negotiates for subsidized rates of Airfreight services for stakeholders in the horticulture business.

In Rwanda, vegetables cultivation activity is undertaken countrywide. Vegetables cultivation provides exceptional opportunities for farmers in the country through employment creation and income generating businesses. This makes it a unique sector for economic development at rural level, national level and foreign exchange earner.

There are many vegetable products produced in Rwanda. They include tomatoes, cabbages, onions, sweet pepper, chili, baby corns, broccoli, French beans, green pepper, carrots, Okra, Eggplant and mushroom among others.

PRIORITY VEGETABLES EXPORTED BY RWANDAN EXPORTERS

Among the above vegetables grown in Rwanda, major prioritized vegetables for export by Rwandan exporters are French beans, Chilies (Peppers), Baby corns and Broccoli. The cultivation of these priority vegetables is distributed countrywide in all districts of the four provinces and Kigali City.

Brief Description

French green beans or haricot verts double as a legume and vegetable, contributing to eye and heart health and diabetes management.

CHILLI/HOT PEPPER

Brief Description

Rwanda hot pepper (Capsicum Annum) is the chili pepper that uses the ‘hot’ attribute because of its intense heat and different color other than red. It is a member of the pepper family with origins in Mexico. On average it is 9 to 12 centimeters long with very intense, spicy walls with similarly hot seeds. Though there are red types, it mostly ripens from green to a chocolaty-brown color. Its Scoville heat units (SHU) levels reach 360,000 which place it in the same capsaicin level as bird’s eye and habanero. Much of the capsaicin comes from the walls of the skin and the seeds.

EGGPLANTBrief Description

Eggplant, locally known as ‘vibiringanya’, is a nutri-ent-dense fruit that comes in a wide range of shapes, colours and sizes.

• Type of varieties grown in Rwanda: Graffiti Eggplant (the purple one), the white ones (Intoryi)

• Cultivation locations in Rwanda: Rubavu and Kayonza

• Climatic conditions for growth: They require high temperatures, similar to tomatoes and peppers. Grow fastest when temperatures are between 70 and 85°F (21 and 30°C)—and very slowly during cooler weather.

• Soils: It grows best in a well-drained sandy loam or loam soil, fairly high in organic matter.

SNOW PEAS

Brief Descriptionsnow peas (Pisum sativum var. macrocarpon) and snap peas (Pisum sativum var. macrocarpon ser. cv.) cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world. They are flatter than garden peas and are not fully opaque.

BABY CORN

Baby corn (also known as young corn, cornlets or baby sweetcorn) is a cereal grain taken from corn (maize) harvested early while the stalks are still small and immature. It typically is eaten whole – cob included – in contrast to mature corn, whose cob is too tough for human consumption.

MUSHROOMS

Brief Description

• Type of varieties grown in Rwanda: yellow oyster, lenthynus and juda’s ear,

temperatures year-round, and the sort of wet humidity conducive to mushrooms growth.

BROCCOLI (Brassica spp.)

Broccoli (Brassica spp.) They mature between 60-90 days depending on the type of species. Important species grown in Rwanda include Green sprouting, Early green F1 Hybrid, Stalto F1, Ritardos, and Heritage. grows well in cool weather under the following conditions in Rwanda.

• Altitude: Cool high altitude regions• Outdoors temperatures between 18°C to

21°C conditions. • Rainfall: Mean annual of 800-1000mm and planted

with sufficient water• Soils: Soil pH of between 6.0 and 7.0 in a well-

ONIONS

Brief Description

Onion (Allium cepa). Major types of onions farmed in Rwanda are bulb onions and spring onions.

OKRA

Okra also known as as lady’s fingers is a herbaceous annual plant in the family of malvaceae which is grown for its edible seeds pods. The Pods are rich in vitamins C and E, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds, especially flavonoids. Are usually ready to be harvested between 45-55 days depending on the species.

• Altitude: Grown in Rwanda on an altitude of no more than 1100 m above sea level

• Temperature: Grown in areas with high sunlight and hot temperatures between 20°C to 30°c.

• Soil. Well drained light sandy to medium loam with high organic matter.

CARROTS

Brief Description

Rwanda’s relatively cooler climate is favorable farming high quality of carrots. The excess carrots are exported to various countries in the region and beyond.

• Type of varieties grown in Rwanda: Nantes, Royal Chantenay, Baby carrot and Nevada.

• Where it is grown.: Nyagatare, Gatsiro, Kayonza, Burera, Musanze, Rusizi, Nyamasheke Muhanga Nyanza, and Gasabo districts.

• Climatic conditions for growth; cooler climatic conditions with temperature range from 15° to 20°C,

• Soils: deep, well-drained, well-prepared sandy loam or loam soils are most suitable.

CASSAVA LEAVES

Brief Description

The cassava leaves also popularly known as isombe (pounded cassava leaves) is a typical Rwandan stew made from mashed cassava leaves. Its leaves originally came from DR Congo and eventually filtered through to Rwanda and Burundi. Ordinarily, isombe is made by pounding fresh cassava leaves in homes or sold ‘ready to use’ in markets and supermarkets. Value added innovations have been introduced by entrepreneurs to improve the shelf life of isombe and make it more appealing to buyers in and outside Rwanda.

• Types of varieties grown in Rwanda: Sweet cassava and bitter cassava T• Cultivation areas in Rwanda: Ruhango, Muhanga, Gisagara, Kamonyi, Nyanza, Bugesera• Climatic conditions for growth: It grows in any setting as long as it can get at least ten months of growing

time and plenty of heat.• Soils: Cassava likes to grow in rich, moist soil that has been loosened up. It grows under very poor

conditions. • Quantities of export: 242,920 Kgs/ year are exported to region and international market.• Total Revenue: 73,858 USD • Export market destinations: Cassava flour is also being exported to UK, France and Belgium.

Fruits are cultivated across all districts in Rwanda. They provide opportunities for employment at input supply, production, value addition and market phases of respective commodity value chains.

The essential types of fruits produced in Rwanda include Pineapple, Avocado, Passion fruits, Tamarillo, Sweet banana, Plantain banana and Mango.

PRIORITY FRUITS EXPORTED BY RWANDAN EXPORTERS

Pineapple, Avocado, sweet banana and Tamarillo are the prioritized fruits for export by Rwandan exporters. Their cultivation is distributed countrywide in all districts.

PROFILES OF PRIORITISED VEGETABLE PRODUCTS

PINEAPPLE

Brief DescriptionPineapples is a fruit crop that originated from Latin America. It reached Africa between 16th and 17th Century and in Rwanda after 1962. In Rwanda Pineapples are commonly grown in western, northern, southern and eastern provinces.

• Type of varieties grown in Rwanda: Queen and Smooth Cayenne and Sugarloaf, Pineapple

• Cultivation locations in Rwanda: It is mostly grown in Kirehe, Ngoma, Bugesera, Kayonza, Nyagatare, Gisagara, Huye, Kamonyi and Muhanga districts.

• Climatic conditions for growth: Pineapple grows in warm and humid climate at low elevations areas within temperature range of 15ºC to 30ºC. It is drought tolerant because of the special water storage cells.

• Quantities of export: 58,638 Kgs (Jan-Dec2019).• Total Revenue: 220,333 RWF• Destination: Netherlands and UAE.

Fruits

AVOCADO Brief DescriptionAvocado (Persea Americana), is a tropical tree fruit crop which originated in Central and South America and now widely distributed in the tropics. In Rwanda, the fruit it is grown in all the regions with Southern province leading followed by Western, Eastern, Northern and the least being Kigali City. The crop is grown for both local consumption and export. The crop is a good source of income for farmers besides earning foreign currency.

• Type of varieties grown in Rwanda: Hass, fuerte, Ettinger, Booth, Choquette and collisson, Nabal, Puebla, Reed, Simmonds, Pinkerton and Bacon. The most popular varieties for export in Rwanda are Hass and fuerte.

• Cultivation locations in Rwanda: Although Avocado crop is grown all over the country, it is predominantly found in Gisagara, Butare, Nyagatare, Nyanza and Rusizi districts.

• Climatic conditions for growth: In Rwanda, Avocado trees do best at moderate warm temperatures between 15ºC to 30 ºC with moderate humidity. Avocado is moderately drought tolerant and thrives well in areas with an annual precipitation of 1000 -1200 millimeters. In Rwanda Avocado trees are planted in March through June.

• Soils: In Rwanda, Avocado grows in a wide range of soil types ranging from deep, fertile, well-aerated, sandy or alluvial loams with neutral or slightly acid pH values (pH 5 to 7).

PASSION FRUITS

Brief Description

The passion fruit (Passiflora edulis), family Passifloraceae, is a native of Brazil. It is shallow rooted, perennial and climbs other plants to search for light by means of tendrils. Passion fruit was introduced in Rwanda for commercial juice processing. Rwanda produces passion fruit both for the local and export markets. The country exports fresh purple passion fruits to the European market.

• Type of varieties grown in Rwanda: Passiflora edulis (Purple passion fruit) na Passiflora flavocarpa (Yellow passion fruit), Sweet passion fruit, Giant passion fruit, Banana passion fruit. The fresh purple passion is the dominant variety produced for both local and export market.

• Cultivation locations in Rwanda: Popularly grown in Gakenke Nyaruguru, Rulindo, Gicumbi, Musanze and Burera districts.

• Climatic conditions for growth: In Rwanda, passion fruit grows well up to an altitude of 2000 m with an annual rainfall of 1000 to 2500 mm. The crop thrives well at tropical to subtropical humid climate and temperature of 200C to 300C.

• Soils: It grows best in light sandy loam well drained soils with pH between 6.0 -7.0.• Quantities of export: 529, 156 Kgs (Jan-Dec2019)• Total Revenue: 357,909 USD• Destination: UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Uganda, DRC, Congo Brazzaville.

MANGO

Brief Description

Mangoes mangos are tropical fruits that belong to the same family as that of pistachios, gandaria, mombin, and cashews. It originated in South-East Asia and is the most important crop among the tropical and subtropical fruits grown in more than 110 countries of the world. In Rwanda, Mango is cultivated in all the provinces, although the Eastern Province is well suited for mango production. Mangoes contribute to farmer family diets as well as serving as a cash crop.

• Type of varieties grown in Rwanda: Zillate, Alfonso, Apple, Kent, Keitt, Sensation, Tommy atkins, Bire and Dodo.

• Cultivation locations in Rwanda: Burera district, Musanze district, Ngororero district, Nyamasheke district, Gitarama district, Kamonyi district

• Climatic conditions for growth: Well suited in both tropical and subtropical conditions in Rwanda temperatures between 20-26°C. Suitable in a dry period of at least 3 months during flowering and sufficient heat during fruit ripening time.

COOKING BANANA

Brief Description

Banana also known as Musa sapientum; Musa cavendishii and Musa nana. Plantain bananas are normally eaten when cooked. Plantain banana are ripe banana species eaten either when cooked or roasted.

• Type of varieties grown in Rwanda: Injagi (76.6%), Intuntu (72.7%), Kamaramasenge (64.9%), Gross Michelle (51.6%), Kayinja (42.9%), Intokatoki (42.4%) and Mujuba (21.2%).

• Cultivation locations in Rwanda: Muhanga, Kivu Lake Border, Cyangugu, Kigali Rural regions, Ngoma District, Kirehe District, Kicukiro, Gasabo, Kibungo.

• Climatic conditions for growth: Thrives well in places with a lot of water with temperatures between 26-30°C and high humidity.

• Quantities of export: 2,471,002 Kgs (Feb-Oct 2019).• Destination : UK, Netherlands, Uganda, DRC.

SWEET& APPLE BANANA

Brief Description

Rwanda sweet banana also known as Musa acumunata or Igisukari (ibisukari) in the Kinyarwanda language is the elongated banana meant for eating when it ripens into either yellow or green skin color. The banana crop was introduced in Rwanda in 1971. The sweet banana is rich in potassium,Vitamins C and B-6.

• Cultivation locations in Rwanda: Muhanga, Kivu Lake Border, Cyangugu, Kigali Rural regions, Ngoma District, Kirehe District, Kicukiro, Gasabo, Kibungo.

TAMARILLO

Tamarillo is a member of the Soloanaceae family, with potato, tomato, pepino and naranjilla. Once known as the ‘Tree Tomato’. Native to the Andean region of Bolivia and north-west Argentina, the wild tamarillo seems to have all but disappeared from its native habitat. Tamarillos were first introduced to New Zealand in the late 1800’s from Asia. However, the red tamarillo was developed by an Auckland nurseryman in the 1920’s. It was not until the 2nd World War that substantial quantities were produced, then an increase in production with the horticultural boom in the 1970’s.

• Cultivation locations in Rwanda: Countrywide• Soil and climate requirements: Climatic conditions for growth: The tamarillo prefers subtropical

climate, with rainfall between 600 and 4000 millimeters and annual temperatures between 15 and 20 °C. It is intolerant to frost (below -2 °C) and drought stress. It is assumed that fruit set is affected by night temperatures.
