HighlightsE n j o y an ape’s-eye view on elevated walkways in the canopy of the Nyungwe forest, listening for the calls of monkeys and chimpanzees.

V I S I T a Rwandan genocide memorial, a local primary school and an institute dedicated to the empowerment of female entrepreneurs.

C o M E face-to-face with endangered mountain gorillas, and learn about efforts to conserve and grow their population through the efforts of local scientists and veterinarians.

Nothing can prepare one for the thrill of sitting mere yards away from a 400-pound silverback gorilla as he contentedly feeds on forest vegetation in the misty underbrush of the Virunga Massif. These majestic and extremely rare creatures have always been a huge draw for ecotourists to Rwanda. But few people venture beyond Kigali and Volcanoes National Park in this tiny, yet fascinating, country. On our unique adventure, led by biological anthropologist Jamie Jones, we also explore the lush forests of Nyungwe National Park, where chimpanzees and black-and-white colobus monkeys abound, and we meet the resilient Rwandan people who have endured atrocities they are determined will never be repeated. This is a truly extraordinary place, and we hope you can join us here.

SUNDAY, JULY 6KIGALI / NYUNGWE FOREST NATIONAL PARKDepart Kigali and drive south through the scenic countryside of western Rwanda, crossing over terraced farmland and passing through lively villages. In the town of Butare, visit the National Ethnographic Mu-seum, established in 1989 and recently renovated, and view exhibits on the traditional crafts and artifacts of Rwanda’s ethnic groups. After lunch at a local hotel restaurant, continue our drive south to Nyungwe

Forest National Park. In the early evening, arrive at our luxurious lodge, set in the midst of an emerald-green tea plantation on the edge of the forest, and enjoy dinner. NYUNGWE FOREST LODGE (B,L,D)

MONDAY & TUESDAY, JULY 7 & 8NYUNGWE FOREST NATIONAL PARKNyungwe formally became a national park in 2005, after first being established in the early part of the 20th century as a forest reserve. Its temper-ate rain forest is the largest Afro-montane forest on the continent, with incredibly tall mahogany and other primary trees, and is home to hundreds of species of birds, 13 spe-cies of primates and a colorful array of flora, including many species of orchids. Spend two full days exploring the best of the park’s natural wonders. For the extremely fit, enjoy a thrilling chimp trek with a park guide, as we make our way through the forest, up and over hills, listening for the loud calls and watching for members of the two local, habituated chimp groups. Other options include more leisurely guided walks in search of the 12 other species of primates, such as the black-and-white colobus and L’Hoest’s mountain monkeys;

W h a t t o e x p e C tWe consider this to be a fast-paced program that requires travelers to be fit, active and in excellent health. Tracking gorillas and chimps requires patience and can be strenuous, demanding and wet; hikes take place on steep, hilly terrain, where paths and roads are usually nonexistent, the underbrush is thick and difficult to navigate, and it may be necessary to hike for three to six hours at a time. Gorilla tracking occurs at elevations ranging from 6,000 to up to 10,000 feet above sea level. For participants unable to attempt the gorilla tracking, portage is available at an additional expense. Some of the roads in Rwanda are winding, bumpy and in poor repair, so travel may be slow at times. Our accommodations range from deluxe 3- and 4-star properties to our luxurious 5-star accommodations at Nyungwe Forest Lodge. Rwanda’s national parks system requires all travelers participating in gorilla or chimp treks to be at least 15 years of age on the date of the excursion.

J A M E S “ J A M I E ” H O L L A N D J O N E S , who joined the Stanford faculty in 2003, first became interested in primatology as a child watching the National Geographic specials on Jane Goodall and Birute Galdikas’ work with the great apes. Though he trained as a primatologist, he now works mostly in the fields of demography and infectious disease ecology. In these fields, he has conducted research on both people and primates and a number of infectious diseases that include a virus closely related to HIV-1 that infects chimpanzees and gorillas. Having led our East Africa Safaris in 2009 and 2011, he is thrilled to be returning to one of his favorite places on the planet: Rwanda.

“I’ve spent a great deal of time watching primates,” says Dr. Jones, “and I can say that there is something special and particularly intimate about seeing gorillas and chimps in the wild.” His lectures during our program will include an overview of comparative ape ecology and social systems, human evolution, and the epidemiology and evolutionary biology of HIV.
