Out of the 29 schools taking part, our students succeeded in winning 4 th place and we were the highest placed non-selective school. It was an amazing achievement for Zak Smith, Skye Salek-Haddadi, Joseph James and Chloe Norwood and testament to the support of our Maths staff. On Thursday, Roding Valley High School celebrated World Book Day and the students really did enjoy it. There were a wealth of activities happening around the school and I am so delighted that many staff dressed up for the occasion. It really made it fun and engaging for our students. We are committed to providing students with choices and educating them about the career opportunities available to them. On Thursday, our Year 8s experienced a day where they had the opportunity to speak with a variety of employers. The employers were varied and worked in various fields including law, journalism, aviation, FSA, banks, accountancy. Students also had the opportunity to write a CV, a personal statement and log into the Job Explorer Database (JED). This makes careers information understandable, interesting and engaging. You can try JED for free at home but each student does have their own login. This coming Friday 15 th March is Comic Relief, please be aware that this will not be a non- uniform day; however, students may wear something red. They are still required to wear their blazers, skirts and trousers, but they can wear a red shirt tie, socks or jumper. It can also be pattered or plain red. The donation is £2 per child and will be collected by our Sixth Form students and staff at the school gates. Thank you for support such a worthwhile cause. On Tuesday 5th March 2019 we went with Chloe Norwood and Zak Smith to Bancroftrsquos School for the annual UKMT Team Maths Challenge We left around 910am and arrived soon after raring to go 29 schools were present at the event First was the Group Round where we were given 10 questions to work through as a team This round went very well as we earned 45 marks out of 60 Second was a Cross Number round - we split up into 2 pairs one of which had the across clues while the other had the down What made this challenging is that some of the clues could be independently

solved while others required other answers for example lsquo10 across divided by 4 downrsquo We also couldnrsquot talk to each other so we had to ask the teacher to tell the other pair to work on a particular clue We scored 49 marks out of 56 making this the round that we did best in After lunch they announced the top five schools in no particular order and we were among them This was exciting for the whole team and motivated us to work harder in the final 2 rounds

The third round was the Shuttle which was split up into 4 parts A B C and D Each part had four questions the first of which could be done without any extra information while the others required the answer to the previous question Once again we were in our pairs and the first pair had questions 1 and 3 while the other had 2 and 4 We only had 8 minutes to complete them all with an extra 3 marks available if we did this in 6 The questions increased in difficulty as we went becoming very challenging near the end of the round We totaled up the marks and got 39 out of 60 We didnrsquot do so well in this round but that made us want to do better in the final one

The fourth round was the Relay We were in pairs again and had to answer a question to unlock the next one which we had to transport to the other pair across the room We were moved to different tables and the teacher sat at the end of the hall This was a speed round meaning that we had to answer as many questions as possible in the amount of time that we were allotted This meant that we had to run and near the end of the round Skye barged someone out of the way to give in an answer It was a well-performed maneuver that was a testimony to the spirit of our team We managed to score 46 marks out of 60 which set us up for the results

At the end the top three scoring teams were announced and went up onto the stage to receive their certificates Somewhat unsurprisingly Bancroftrsquos came first and will be moving on to the National Team Challenge We were not part of the top three but cards were given out at the end that revealed where each team had placed and we came fourth - the only non-selective school in the top 5 We were overjoyed and Mr Rahman could hardly believe it We (Skye and Joseph) will be taking part again next year and we hope to do even better We would all like to thank Mr Naidoo for driving us to the event Mr Qureshi for taking us and supporting our team the Maths Department for arranging this and last but not least Bancroftrsquos for hosting the event Also Mr Rahman was quite helpful too

Our Year 8 students took part in a lsquoCareers Drop Down Dayrsquo on Thursday to increase their knowledge of the vast array of careers available and the pathways needed to achieve them Students took part in workshops and presentations on topics such as LORIC skills and life skills as well as having the chance to research careers and talk to employers Employers from a wide range of careers including aviation accountancy engineering and journalism talked to students about skills qualities and qualifications needed for their area of work

The fast paced action pack day provided the students with the chance to obtain information on a range of careers to help support them make well informed option choices for Key Stage 4 and beyond These opportunities are invaluable to our students understanding of their opportunities and choices they will be making This will begin with their GCSE options next year so we need to be confident our students are equipped with all the knowledge they need

From the feedback students thoroughly enjoyed the day and were engaged and interested throughout All our visitors also commented on the excellent attitude and enthusiasm of our students Well done to them all Written by Miss Williams

Message from Mr Ryan

This week saw the launch of the year 9 4040 lectures On Thursday 40 selected girls attended the introduction hosted by Mr Naidoo Next week it is the turn of 40 boys In the coming weeks they will be invited to attend a series of lectures during Period one aimed at expanding their general knowledge School is a time where we encourage children to do the best they can in their subjects but this can be at the detriment of general information The lectures are aimed to impart knowledge be it on how to qualify as a pilot or the effects of Communism

I would like to congratulate two students from Year 9 who have successfully competed in the Maths Challenge Chloe Norwood and Zak Smith out of 29 schools competing- they came 4th

School Communications

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school The app gives you direct access to your childs attendance timetable absence records achievements behaviour and much much more You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your childs education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school We can also embed links to regularly used systems for example ParentPay amp Doddle so you can keep everything in one place You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own studentrsquos information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App

We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively We found however our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App

But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this

when clicking on the My Students tab The MyEd app is available for

both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links

Message from Mr Price

As our second set of Pre-Public Exams (PPErsquos) come to an end it has been an extremely busy start to this half term and our year 11s are on the home straight heading towards the Public exams Our year 11s need as much support as they can get both at school and at home to ensure that they are doing everything that they can to achieve their potential

Now is the time to really push on with revision and ensuring that our students have revision timetables set up and that they are following these

PE GCSE Moderation Day

Well done to our GCSE PE students and Mr Jones and his department for holding such a successful moderation day on Tuesday All pupils involved were a credit to the school and the array of talent on show was wonderful to see

Hospitality and Catering Practical Exam

Well done to all students involved and Ms Barclay The standard of cooking was excellent and it was great to see what talented and budding chefs we have here at RVHS There were a number of teachers that were keen to try some of the baked goods on display and the feedback was very positive

GCSE Drama Performances

A number of students have been involved in the GCSE drama performances this week They were a real credit to Mrs Walker and Mr Wilson Some of performances were outstanding and even produced tears through their emotive performances The support that all the group of students gave each other was really lovely to see and gave one another confidence when performing

Ellie Blundy

For her performance in Catering and sharing her

Victoria sponge with lots of happy members of staff

Archie Williams

For his efforts during the PE moderation
