POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR LEARNING (PBL) LAUNCH

2012 will mark an exciting milestone at Rutherford Technology High School with the introduction of Positive Behaviour Learning, more commonly known as PBL.

The PBL program was officially launched at a school assembly on Monday 6 February 2012. Guest Speaker was Rick Stone, Assistant Coach at the Newcastle Knights. Rick spoke about the ways that positive behaviour is reflected in the world of sport and throughout life.

The PBL program is designed to promote positive student behaviours and has been introduced at many schools across Australia, with a significant reduction in incidences of poor student behaviour. The focus is on recognising and rewarding positive behaviour, encouraging students to take responsibility for their own behaviour and learning.

Introduction of the program starts with determining core values and expectations that guide Positive Behaviour Learning. EXECUTIVE REPORT Welcome back to 2012, especially Year 7 students and parents who are entering a new phase of their education journey. I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year.

Email addresses

We urgently need email addresses to electronically send out the Newsletter. Please complete the return slip attached to the Newsletter.

Strategic Plan 2012-2014

Our school community spent a lot of time last year collaboratively deciding on our focus for the next 3 years. The focus will be on: Leadership and Management - Wellbeing and Engagement - Literacy and Numeracy. I will place an expanded version of these focus areas in the next Newsletter.

PSP Survey

You may be aware that Rutherford Technology High School has been on the Priority Schools Program (PSP) for the 2009-2012 period. Being on the PSP program brings significant benefits to all students. The additional $145,000 funding enables the school to engage three additional staff and provides extra resources that benefit all students. It also means that the school has access to regional support staff that provide invaluable assistance in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy.

The next round of PSP Funding for 2013–2017 will be determined as the result of a survey being done at the beginning of March 2012. This affects your child as it covers the period that they will be attending high school. This is early notice that the families of all Year 7 and Year 8 students will receive a survey during the first week of March. We are asking for your support in completing this survey and returning it to school. The survey is totally confidential and is returned in a sealed envelope that is not opened at the school.

Information compiled from the surveys is used to determine future funding therefore we ask for your help in ensuring that your child gets every possible advantage as they move through high school.

It is imperative for us to be successful in gaining this funding that we have 100% return of surveys. Please

help us in achieving this.

There will be incentives for students returning forms:

Every student returning their form will receive a small prize;

All students who return their forms will go in the draw to win an Ipad (donated by the P&C);

The first class in each year to return 100% of forms will receive a Pizza Party;

As each other class reaches 100% they will go in the draw for another Pizza Party. Further information will be forthcoming.

P&C

The P&C at Rutherford Technology do a fantastic job in supporting the school at various events and through their fund-raising efforts. They are an extremely sociable and friendly group. If you are interested in attending meetings they are on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Staff Common Room. The next meeting is on 20 February.

School improvements

A number of improvements took place in the school holidays:

We received three more demountable classrooms, including one for Metalwork;

Six classrooms were completely painted with two more to be done next holidays;

All the ramps near the Library were re-carpeted;

We have new signs for all rooms, directions and our core values;

Slabs were laid before the holidays by Mr. Kearney and a working party of students. The P&C has donated $10,000 for new seating that will be here in two weeks;

Mr. McMullen led a working party of staff that painted existing seating throughout the school.

We have also received a grant to completely re-furbish both Home Ec. kitchens. Work will start shortly, bringing short term inconvenience for long term gain.

MEDIA PHOTOGRAPHS

Rutherford Technology High School often uses photographs of students for the purpose of promoting the school and public education. Local media often come to the school to take photographs for newspapers such as the Maitland Mercury. This is a very positive way to promote the school and to keep the community informed about the many activities that take place at the school. If you do not wish your child to be included in photographic shots could you please contact the school and advise that this is the case.

CALCULATORS FOR MATHEMATICS

As part of the new National Assessment Program (NAPLAN), all students in Year 7 and Year 9 will sit for a Numeracy exam which has a non-calculator and a calculator component. This exam is held in May and to best prepare your child, it is important he/she has use of a calculator in class. Whilst the Mathematics faculty will continue to stress the importance of mental computation (with the majority of content being taught this way) it is also vital students learn to use calculators effectively as a technological tool to aid their learning. If you need to purchase a calculator, a scientific one is preferable, with the Casio fx-82AUplus model being a popular choice for our students and is the one recommended by the Mathematics faculty. It is often on sale at local newsagencies and retail stores but can also be purchased from the front office at RTHS for $25. This model has all the features necessary for the study of all Mathematics courses from Year 7 to Year 12 and, if looked after, should last that long. If you have any concerns regarding the above information please do not hesitate to contact me on the school phone number. Craig Trotter - Head Teacher Mathematics

YEAR 12 REPORT

Welcome back to Year 12, the final year at Rutherford Technology High School. I hope the holidays were restful but productive with summaries and study notes being produced. There will be assessment tasks, exams and the HSC, but in the midst of this the students are expected to be outstanding role models and leaders within the school.

In order to maximize comfort and create environment conducive to study the Year 12 lockers have been relocated and can be hired at a cost of $20 for the year. Tea/coffee/milk is provided in the Senior Study at a cost of $10 per student. Year 12 has been given the opportunity to show their honesty, integrity and my trust in them by using the facilities immediately rather than being asked to pay before use.

Year 12 students are asked to be cooperative in having photos taken for inclusion in the school magazine or in the Year 12 DVD.

Please note that there is no such thing as a “free period”. These are for homework, study, preparation of study notes and revision.

I am very aware of the cost of Year 12 – subject fees, school fees, uniforms, excursions, lockers, tea/coffee, formal wear, etc. I will continue to remind students of the costs so that they can budget accordingly throughout the year.

Finally, please find the time to sit with your son/daughter and discuss their role as school leaders who will display a mature approach throughout Year 12.

Kevin McMullen

Year 12 Advisor

SENIOR STUDY

It may be the beginning of a new school year for all other year groups in the school, however for our Year 12 students Term 1 is a continuation of the HSC work which began at the beginning of Term 4 last year.

It is important that students use their time in the senior study to go back over work covered during class time, complete any unfinished class work, homework or assessment task work which has been set by teachers. Having an organised approach and working consistently over the next three terms will help students to achieve their full potential.

All students should have a copy of the Year 12 HSC Assessment Booklet. This booklet has information relating to assessment procedures and also includes assessment schedules for all subjects. Spare copies are available from Ms Turner in the Senior Study.

SCHOOL A-Z

School A to Z is a new online school community for parents. It includes a website, a free mobile app and social media channels on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. It is designed to give parents the support they need to help their children’s learning, wellbeing and overall development, and provide advice on appropriate use of technology. Included in the 1,000 content items are assignment starters, easy to read subject glossaries on Maths and English terms, “how to” videos and podcasts full of expert tips and information.

Common parent concerns covered by School A to Z videos, featuring advice from NSW public school teachers, include:

Advice on how to prepare for the various stages of school life. Tips on how to handle bullying and build resistance. How parents can help with homework. Preparing for the HSC. How to help with Maths homework. Advice on how parents can best communicate with their school. Strategies to build reading skills and how to tackle essay writing.

STAMPS FOR CHARITY

Thank you to the students and their families who supported this charity during 2011. The group we support raised over $30,000 (a record) during 2011 and have distributed about $15,000 in charitable donations, with more about to be allocated, through the efforts of groups like us across NSW. A reminder for those wishing to help in 2012, and information for those new to the school; the charity collects and resells used stamps to collectors, stamp dealers and retail stores. You can help by keeping the envelopes from your mail (as intact as possible) and sending them to me at the Math’s staffroom at School. It would be good if you can send the entire envelope, as often the logos and postmarks are as collectible as the stamps. If, however, you would prefer to tear the stamp from the envelope, please try to include the postmark as well as the stamp and avoid tearing very close to the stamp, as stamps with torn perforations are of no value. Thanking you in anticipation, David Carratt

PREMIERS VOLUNTEERING CHALLENGE

At the end of 2012 two of our students, Ebony O’Hara and Alexandra Varley, were invited to attend the NSW Premier’s Student Volunteering Awards ceremony. Ebony O’Hara received a Black Opal award for achieving over 150 hours as a St Johns Ambulance volunteer, the highest level of award achievable. Alex received a Diamond Award for achieving over 100 hours as an SES volunteer. Rutherford Technology High School students in Years 9 and 10 are encouraged to take part in the NSW Premier’s Student Volunteering Awards.

This program is a NSW government initiative that encourages all students to undertake a minimum of 20 hours of volunteering during the time they are enrolled in Years 9 and 10. In appreciation of this contribution to the community, students will receive Premier’s Certificates. Congratulations to both Ebony and Alex for their

outstanding efforts as volunteers in the Maitland

community.

TAS FACULTY NEWS

Welcome back to all students, and to our new Year 7 students, welcome to High School. Many of our students have been going through introductory booklets for their TAS classes. The Year 7, “What is Technology about?” booklet, includes some information about the subject Technology (Mandatory) as well as some interesting lateral thinking exercises. Students in Year 7 have also been given a homework booklet for Term 1. These booklets have been designed to be completed in stages, one activity per week. We have asked students to show their family the homework booklet and return the finished work with a parent signature. Students in all TAS subjects will be receiving regular homework this year with a focus in Design activities, literacy and/or numeracy in Technology subjects. Students in Years 9 and 10 TAS electives have received a booklet regarding the expectations of students and safe work practices in practical rooms. Students will need to bring the parent acknowledgement slip back and give it to their classroom teacher, before they start their practical work. There have been many discussions in classes lately about the issue of shoes in practical rooms and students have been advised that they will not be allowed to complete any practical activities if they do not comply with the Department’s safety requirements (including shoes, safety glasses, hair restraints etc). Fees for all elective subjects are now due and payment is required by all students who chose to take these elective subjects. We are looking forward to everyone working together to make 2012 a great year. MRS C WEBER AND MR C HALL Relieving Head Teacher TAS

STUDENTS HELP TO BEAUTIFY SCHOOL

At the end of 2011 a group of hard working students, Adam Aldous, Adam Hart, Jeremy Lambourne, Lane Southern, Tyson Pelley, Hayden Slade, Shelbi Hill, Trent Tuck, Nick Bakuis and Mathew Berry, worked with teacher Steve Kearney to form the groundwork and lay three large concrete slabs that will form the base for sheltered student seating. The work was physically demanding – blistered hands and aching backs were the order of the day, however the level of job satisfaction was high – leaving no doubt that these young people have made a significant contribution to the comfort of students who will enjoy a shady place to have their lunch in coming years. The commitment demonstrated by these students was outstanding with all of them volunteering to put in extra hours and attend school right up until the very last day of term to ensure the job was completed. The pride that these students took in undertaking the task and ensuring a quality job is to be applauded. On behalf of everyone at the school a sincere THANK YOU for a job well done.

YEAR 10 REPORT

Welcome Year 10. Year 10 has had a positive beginning to the year. We have welcomed a number of new students to our year group and they have been made to feel part of the group straight away. I am impressed with the wearing of the correct uniform from 99% of all students. Students do need to remember however if the correct footwear is not being worn it will mean they will not be able to participate in specific lessons. It is also good to see and hear how Year 10 are paying attention to teacher requests regarding equipment which includes the use of computers and exercise books. Laptops are to be used but under the direction of the teacher. Year 10 is a busy year without a school certificate set of exams. In the next newsletter I will pass on to parents the information I have been given from employers regarding expectations of Year 10 and what they will be looking for in the report cards. I have been giving this to the students in our LAW lessons. This year Careers is a subject which Year 10 undertake for one period a fortnight. Mrs Elliott and myself will be working very closely with the students, and with your help as well we will endeavour to have all students having at least one stint of work experience during the year. I am excited to be back in the role of Year Adviser and as always am looking forward to working with the students and parents in making this a very positive year together. Two of our Year 11 students, Ebony O’Hara and Alex Varley, were both nominated for the Maitland Junior Citizen of the Year award as part of the 2012 Australia Day celebrations. At the Australia Day celebrations held at Maitland Park, Alex Varley received the Junior Citizen of the Year award.

Ebony puts in many hours as part of her St Johns Ambulance Brigade duties, while Alex puts in a similar effort as a member of the Maitland SES. Both girls recognise the value of volunteering in their local community and are to be congratulated for being recognised for their efforts.

SCHOOL PHOTO DAY

School Photo Day will be held on Friday, 24 February. We will have a make up day on Friday, 2 March for any students absent on 24 February. Our dress code for photos is school uniform with no visible undershirts, no dangly earrings and no facial studs please. Your son or daughter will receive a personalised envelope about a week before the Photo Day. MSP Photography advises the following: “Payment for the whole family may be placed in one envelope. It is important that each family member hands in their own personalised envelope to the photographer indicating where payment may be found. The pre-pay envelope must be handed to the photographer before individual portraits will be taken. Please make any cheques payable to MSP Photography or enclose correct money as the school does not handle any money or change. There is a 100% money-back guarantee if not satisfied with the photos.” MSP has been our school photographer for many years now and are part of our school community in so many ways. Please mark the date on your calendar and remember to ask your child to show you their personalised envelope when they receive it. Your school photo day coordinator - Mr. Brown

SCHOOL BANKING WITH THE MAITLAND MUTUAL For students wishing to take advantage of School Banking a reminder that Maitland Mutual offers this facility at Rutherford Technology High School. A representative from The Mutual visits the school every Thursday of the school term and collects deposits from the locked safe box located on the wall outside the Front Office. Spare envelopes are available on top of the locked safe box. The deposits are taken to The Mutual’s Rutherford branch for processing. This is a continuation of The Mutual’s financial literacy program, bank@school, and is a great way to develop a regular savings pattern. To be part of this program students need to hold an account with The Mutual, who offer a range of accounts for students, such as:

Student Saver account, which is exempt from all transaction and account keeping fees (incl. Redi ATM). It also

provides you with a range of options to access your funds, such as Internet banking and Neo Visa Debit card; or Bonus Saver account, which rewards you for regular savings. For more information please visit The Mutual’s student website www.myneo.com.au or contact the Rutherford branch on 4932 1000.

31 January 2012 Dear Parent / Caregiver,

DER devices (laptop computers) for students in Years 9, 10, 11 & 12 The Digital Education Revolution program is an important initiative that ensures all students are given access to ICT technologies to enhance their learning opportunities. Your support is essential for the continuation of this initiative. It is important that we take the necessary steps to ensure all student DER devices are maintained and operating to the required standards so that all lessons can benefit from the use of these technologies. Unfortunately the warranty on these devices has limitations and not all incidents are covered. If a device requires repair outside of the terms of the warranty, a fee of $249.00 is applied from the manufacturer. As a result, if your child’s DET device requires a non-warranty repair, a fee of $249.00 will be required to be paid to the school in order to undertake the necessary repairs. Rutherford Technology High School values your support in this matter. Sincerely,

Michael Whiting Principal
