CRUISE CONTROL By Herb Clark, President

Once again it has been a very busy month. Our members have had several car shows to attend and so many other activities. Congratulations to those who have won trophies. It is always good to see my fellow members haul off the “Iron.” How about John Rank? He is still winning trophies with his new “ride.” Congratulations to John.

Speaking of John, he is a valuable asset to ARC. He has detailed our “Raffle Cars” over the years, making them shine and look so great. THANK YOU JOHN!!!

If you haven’t heard, the Governing Board has approved for ARC to construct a new Paint & Prep Building attached to the back corner of the current building just outside the welding area. This building will be 1400 Sq. Ft. and house the downdraft spray booth as well as the prepping stations. Now we can truly be a full restoration center. It you were at one of the meetings leading up to the final decision, it was so great to hear the praises from the board about ARC and what we are doing for the community.. We thank them for their kind words. We thank our members for making so many good things happen!

We have many new members who we want to welcome! We also need to ask you to help us pay for our building. We are where we are by our generous members contributing to our building fund in several ways. As a 501 C(3) organization, your donation is tax deductible. We need your pledge now. Thank you!

If you are a snowbird and already left, we miss you! If you are still here but leaving soon, have a safe journey! Patty and I head back a little early this year to attend a wedding in Des Moines, Iowa. We will return on June 1st to prepare for the Great Race. We will head to San Rafael, CA around June 11th to start the journey. Thank you ALL for making this an incredible club!

The Prides would Like ARC’S Help!

Every Saturday you see them out on several of SCW’s roadways working from about 5 AM to 9 AM. They are the ones wearing the orange vests. This is a small army of volunteers that keeps our community looking clean, fresh and attractive. They are the PRIDES! We salute their efforts. Several of our members are part of this group of unselfish workers who keep our community beautiful.

They could use our help! They need a replacement pick up truck. Their truck is beyond repair. If someone can donate a truck to ARC (tax deductible) we will fix it up and give it to our friends at Prides! Contact Tom Jones if you can help! 503-887-3430. Thank you!

1936 Ford Phaeton Donated to ARC by Mel Martin of the Mel Martin Auto

Museum ARC is very fortunate to have been given a 1936 Ford Phaeton by Mel Martin of the Mel Martin Auto Museum. Mel Martin’s Museum is “Dedicated to the preservation of collectible and rare automobiles for educational purposes.”

Mel likes what ARC stands for and the work we are doing with youth. He decided to donate a vehicle to ARC to help with our goals. Several ARC members went to the museum and were allowed to select a vehicle from several that were offered. The Ford Phaeton was selected. It is already museum quality but ARC members plan to take it to the next level and either sell or auction it off. If you might be interested in owning this beautiful Ford, contact Herb Clark at 623-444-7778. It would be great to keep it in the ARC family!

The Mel Martin Museum is located at 17641 N. Black Canyon Highway (1-17 Frontage Road), Phoenix, AZ 85023. The phone number is 602-298-2377. Their hours are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We hope you will visit the museum and thank them for their generous donation. There are many beautiful classic cars there to see.

Thank you, Mel.

BUY A BRICK “SPECIAL” EXTENDED

The Bricks sales are coming in and so we decided to extend the program through May. Buying a brick for yourself, a friend, relative, loved one, or pet has inspired several members to buy. Whose name would you like to see on the floor of the ARC Showroom? When funds are available, the rotunda area outside, just in from Anna’s Courtyard, will be glassed in and become ARC’s showroom. The “Pavers” will be the floor.

If you buy 2 bricks you can buy one additional brick for half price. A 4 x 8 brick is $125. An 8 x 8 brick is $250. Depending on the size you buy the third brick is half price. Contact Sparky Jones for detailed information. You can pick up a form at the John S. Chaney Restoration Center in Don’s Garage or go online to our website restoration.scwclubs.com.

Brad Huber is another unsung hero of ARC who works tirelessly to ensure the success of the club. As one of the original group that formed ARC, Brad has been doing this since nearly day one.

He led the Entertainment and Communications for the very first ARC car show and has been doing so ever since. He is one of the web monitors that keep the website updated. After the building was turned over to us, Brad has been working daily to ensure all of the work on the inside is done correctly and timely. All this adds up to hundreds, if not thousands of hours Brad has worked on various club projects. If all of that isn’t enough, he has now agreed to head up the maintenance of the new building too!

For all of his hard work, Brad seeks no special recognition. He prefers to work quietly in the shadows. My first attempt to get Brad to let me do a story about him was declined for this reason. Only after being subjected to the charming persuasions of his lovely wife Joyce and our beloved editor Patty Clark, did Brad finally consent. Thanks, girls!

Brad and Joyce have lived in SCW for 15 years, after spending most of their lives in California. They did live in Lake Havasu City from about 1965 to 1970, where Brad worked as an electrician. He actually wired the first lights on the London Bridge there! Meanwhile, Joyce was working at the MuCulloch Chainsaw

factory. They then moved back to California, where Brad worked for American Express – first as a programmer and later he was promoted to head the technical staff. Joyce worked mostly as a domestic engineer (stay at home mom!) from that point forward, but prior to them getting married, she also was a dental assistant. Brad and Joyce met in high school in Twenty Nine Palms, CA…. Yes, high school sweethearts! The couple h a v e 2 d a u g h t e r s a n d 5 grandchildren. They also raised their nephew and he now has 2 children that they lovingly consider their grandchildren also.

After retiring, they built a home in Meadview, AZ, because of the ability to satisfy their passion for boating, but found that there was not enough other activities there to keep them engaged. So they moved to SCW. Like most of us, they absolutely love it here! They also recently purchased a home in Prescott Valley where they will be spending most of their summer. It was the purchase of this home that led to their current cool car - a 2005 Dodge Viper SRT-10 convertible.

The Viper lived across the street from Brad and Joyce here in

SCW. Brad had been pining for this car for some time. After buying the house in Prescott Valley, they needed furniture. One day, the same people who owned the Viper had a sofa sitting out in front of their house for sale, so Brad asked Joyce to go check it out. Well,

Joyce must have some kind of gift for persuasion, because not only did she come home with the sofa, but the Viper as well! Needless to say, this was quite a pleasant surprise for Brad!

Brad’s interest in cars was initially sparked by his father, who was a mechanic. In about the 8th or 9th grade, Brad and his buddies started going out to the desert around Twenty Nine Palms and finding abandoned cars that were half buried in the sand. They would dig them up, get them running and turn them into dune buggies! In later years, Brad had several cool cars, including a Model A, an ’85 Olds 442, and two convertible hot rods: a ’39 Ford and a ’49 Ford. Maybe the coolest car of all though was a ’63 Austin Healey 3000! Not to be outdone by her husband, Joyce has had some cool cars of her own, including her first – a ’48 Merc! She also had a ’56 Chevy convertible.

Brad is committed to getting the John S. Chaney building built to its original planned grandeur. W i t h a l l t h e c l u b h a s accomplished thus far, due to t he he r cu lean e f f o r t s o f members like Brad, I have no doubt he will get his wish!

MEMBERS’ RIDES By Dwight Senne 57 years is a long time. I know, because that’s how long I have been alive! Think of all the cars you have owned in the last 57 years – and how many of those you wish you could have back. Jay Finlay does not have to wish. She has had her favorite car for 57 years! Not only that, but she has kept it looking as good, and in some respects, better, than when she first got it.

The car we are talking about is a 1953 Mercury Monterey Convertible. The Merc is powered by a 255 flathead V8 with factory automatic transmission, power steering, and power windows. According to Hagerty, there were only about 8400 Monterey convertibles sold in 1953, but significantly fewer with these options. The base price for the convertible was $2370 back in ’53. While the car was listed with a curb weight of 3770 lbs, Jay had hers weighed and it came in at 3980 lbs. The car only had about 49,000 miles on it when Jay got it. It now has nearly 330,000 miles! She is happy to say that she drives this car daily.

Of course, a car of this vintage, with this many miles is not maintained in this condition without work. Over the years, Jay has rechromed the bumpers, got a new interior, had the engine overhauled, and just recently, had the car repainted. But many of the pieces on this car are just as they were in 1953. The clock even still works!

Having a car this long is going to have a lot of interesting stories attached to it. For example, In 2003, she drove her pride and joy 5800 miles round trip from Redding, CA to Detroit to participate in the National Early Ford V8 Meet. But that is not the most interesting story….

In 1983, Jay had her car at a big car show in California that featured several big name entertainers including Wolfman Jack. It turns out he had seen her car there and fell in love with it and he took note of who the car belonged to. Later, after standing in line to get his autograph, Jay was able to talk to the Wolfman. He recognized her as the owner of that Merc that he loved and offered to buy it. She told him it was not for sale. He then offered her $50,000 for it! That was very difficult to turn down but she did! Now you have some idea of what this car means to Jay.

GREAT RACE 2016

Five ARC team’s have entered the Great Race. The race/rally this year will loosely follow the “Lincoln Highway.” The Lincoln Highway was the first Transcontinental Highway across the US. Congress approved the highway in 1908. It spanned from San Francisco to New York. Later it was replaced by Interstate 80, but much of the old highway and buildings remain. The course this year will start in San Rafael, CA on June 18th, and finish in Moline, IL on June 26th.

This year’s teams will consist of: Don Kloth and his grandson Chris, Tom and Suzanne Jones, Dick and Beth Crabtree, Herb and Pat Clark, and our dear friends from Dysart High School. The Dysart team has been helped by several of our ARC members. We are very close to getting their ’67 Cougar on the road. Thanks to Five Star Engines for their support in supplying a new crate engine.

In the past, many of our members have wanted to know how the trip was going on a daily basis. Also, several Arizona newspapers carried the daily reports written by Pat Clark. This year she will be driving Herb’s 1951 GMC pickup. If you want to be on her email list, you need to send her an email requesting to be included. Her email is [email protected]. You can also get race coverage by googling greatrace.com. This site will be about the full slate of cars involved, Pat’s will basically cover stories about our hometown teams. Good luck to all involved!

EDITOR’S GARAGE By Pat Clark This winter season in SCW has flown by! A lot was accomplished! When we arrived in the fall, we got to watch the ARC building take shape. Each day was a delight to see the progress being made. When the building was turned over to ARC, it was amazing to watch our members transform the inside into a working garage. Our first event in our new building was a birthday party for Zane Childress, our honorary Make A Wish member. Later in January, we celebrated the Grand Opening of the John S. Chaney Restoration Center with thousands of our friends. What a good time! February kept us all busy with the Car Show/Swapmeet. In March the work in Don’s Garage continued. There were also numerous car shows that many ARC members attended. ARC has gotten some national attention for our charitable work in the community and for our work with youth (especially with Dysart High School). People noticed us and EVIT (East Valley

Institute of Technology) donated two paint booths to ARC, and Mel Martin of The Mel Martin Car Museum donated a 1936 Ford Pheaton. Now plans are underway to add a “Paint and Prep” room to our building. This addition has been approved and building can start any time. This will make ARC a full service restoration center. None of these things could have taken place without our members who volunteer to help. There are so many who have put in numerous hours to make ARC what it is today. There are still a lot of you who have not volunteered though. Just think how great we can be if everyone gives a little! The sky is the limit! As we prepare to leave SCW for the summer, we are excited to see what the fall will bring. We will be doing the Great Race again this year in June. If you wish to get daily updates on the progress of the 5 ARC entrants, please email me at [email protected]. Love you and have a great summer!
