Gold Medalist to Share Experiences with Students Motivational Speaker Part of 2012-2013 Lyceum Series

Gold medal winner and Olympic basketball coach Jennifer Gillom will visit Rust

College Wednesday, February 13. Gillom was an assistant coach to the 2010 USA

Women’s Basketball World Championship team and the Olympic basketball team from

2012 Summer Olympics in London.

A native of Abbeville, Mississippi, Gillom attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in Oxford where she earned a career record of 103-23, and appeared in four NCAA tournaments—including two appearances in the Sweet 16 and two appearances in the Elite Eight. After leaving Ole Miss, Gillom went on to play with the 1988 Gold Medal Olympic Team. She played seven seasons with the WNBA (Phoenix Mercury), and she is also the former head coach of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks and the Minnesota Lynx. She is currently an assistant coach for the Washington Mystics.

Awards for Jennifer Gillom include the 1985 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year Award, the 1986 SEC Female Athlete of the Year Award, and the 2002 WNBA Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award. She was inducted to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (Knoxville, Tennes-see) in 2009. The sports complex at Ole Miss was named the Gillom Sports Center after Jennifer and her sister Peggy. She is also the sister of Coach Priscilla Gillom-Fisher, Director of Student Activities for Rust College.

Ms. Gillom will speak at 3:00 p.m. in Heard Auditorium of the McCarty-Varnell B.C.S. Building. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

Upcoming Lyceum Events:

Wednesday, March 6—7:00 p.m.: The Innovators, an a’cappella music group from

Zimbabwe. The group was formed in 2007 and have recorded three albums and two singles.

Their amazing tour journey helps fund the needs of the youth, children and families in

Zimbabwe.

Tuesday, March 12—7:00 p.m.: Watoto DeAfrika, Memphis Watoto

Performing Arts Ensemble. This program uses a variety of afrocentric literary

styles including movement and black poetic composition and expressions. The

Memphis Watoto group has performed for Rust College students and community

residents twice, with one performance incorporating members of the Rust College

student body.

A Sooooooo Sweet Week with the Ladies of

Zeta Phi Beta By: Hope Green

The lovely women of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Iota

Gamma Chapter, started the week off in the 1950s. Their

theme was entitled “1950s Musicals” and from their

creative decorations in the cafeteria, one could definitely

feel the 1950s vibe. The events during their week ranged

from a sock-hop to a Zeta Carnival.

2014 Miss Blue Revue and Mr.

Debonair Pageant, crowning Ms. Shakeitha Gardner and Mr. LeDarius Davis. They

welcomed Soror Amy Bolton-Curley, who has produced several television specials

including “The Trumpet Awards” and BET’s “Sunday Best”. Bolton-Curley gave a

powerful speech on Thursday during the weekly AEP assembly.

“The student response to our week was absolutely phenomenal!" said Portia Ellis,

president of the Iota Gamma Chapter. "We were a little apprehensive because the

weather got so severe during the week to the extent that classes were canceled.

Nevertheless, the events remained, and we had a larger number of student attendance and more positive feedback than

we could have ever imagined!”

Black History Moment: Carter G. Woodson

Carter G. Woodson is known as the Father of Black History. In 1915, Woodson helped found the

Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (which later became the Association for the

Study of Afro-American Life and History), which had the goal of placing African-American his-

torical contributions front and center. The next year he established the Journal of Negro History, a

scholarly publication.

Woodson also formed the African-American-owned Associated Publishers Press in 1921 and

would go on to write more than a dozen books over the years, including A Century of Negro

Migration (1918), The History of the Negro Church (1921), The Negro in Our History (1922) and Mis-Education of the

Negro (1933). Mis-Education—with its focus on the Western indoctrination system and African-American self-

empowerment—is a particularly noted work and has become regularly course adopted by college institutions.

In addition to his writing pursuits, Woodson also worked in a number of educational positions, serving as a principal for

Washington, D.C.’s Armstrong Manual Training School before working as a college dean at Howard University and the

West Virginia Collegiate Institute.

To help teachers with African-American studies, Woodson later created the Negro History Bulletin in 1937 and also

penned literature for elementary and secondary school students.

Woodson died on April 3, 1950, a respected and honored figure who received accolades for his vision. His legacy

continues on, with Black History Month being a national cultural force recognized by a variety of media formats,

organizations and educational institutions.

Guest Professor Lectures On Emancipation Proclamation

The Division of Social Science welcomed Dr. Michael Williams, professor of African

American History at Mississippi State University, Monday, January 28. Dr. Williams

presented a lecture to students and faculty, “Realizing the Promise of the Emancipation

Proclamation: Medgar Evers and the Black Freedom Movement in Mississippi”.

Dr. Williams received his Bachelor of Arts in History in 2000; a Master of Arts in

History in 2004, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy in 2007 from the University of Mississippi.

Following his graduation from Ole Miss, Dr. Williams served as an adjunct professor

at Rust College, teaching U.S. History, from August 2007 until December 2007. He

joined the Mississippi State faculty as an assistant professor of history and

African American studies in August 2008.

A PHantastic Week with the K’s By: Hope Green

The pretty women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Theta Upsilon Chapter began their

week with awe-inspiring décor and class. As the students of Rust College graced the cafeteria, they

were met with decorations that were just as graceful, classic, and elegant as the members of the

sorority they represented. The theme of AKA Week 2013 was “PHantasy Island” and from the looks

of things one could tell that PHantasies would definitely come true.

Activities such as: Know Your Mate, Roommate, or Best friend Game Show, a

dance-a-thon, and a movie night were just a few of the many that occurred

during Theta Upsilon’s week. The organization crowned Shamya Howell as

their Miss Pink and Green 2013-2014 on Tuesday January 22. The AKAs

stunned the pageant audience with their lavish decorations which included a six-foot clam with a

pearl inside. The ladies welcomed Mrs. Victoria Burley-Whigham, a graduate of Rust

College and a 1991 initiate of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. , who gave a meaningful speech

during the women’s Academic Enrichment Program assembly.

“Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Theta Upsilon’s 2013-2014 Week was more than a success,”

said Theta Upsilon Vice President and program chair Tenisia Russell. “ I was stopped constantly

on campus by students with positive feedback

on our week. To ensure that our chapter has

more successful weeks to come, we will con-

tinue to plan ahead as we did this year—as well

as have full participation by each soror. I am

elated to know that we fulfilled the

‘PHantasies’ we had for our week.”

PHantasy Island ended with community service

at Trinity Mission Health and Rehab of Holly

Springs on Saturday, January 26th.

Loan disbursement and refunds will be issued after authorized charges have been deducted (tuition,

room & board, etc). All student must be enrolled with at least six (6) hours each module in order to process

the loan.

Loan Disbursements Spring Semester All Students with “30” hours or less will have their

loans disbursed to the college in (2) equal payments each semester:

2013 Spring Semester (Students enrolled in the Fall 2012) 1st Payment January 16, 2013 2nd Payment February 28, 2013

(Students enrolled in the Spring 2013) 1st Payment February 7, 2013 2nd Payment March 7, 2013

If the student account shows a credit balance after pay-ments have been applied to the student’s college ex-penses (tuition, room & board, etc.) a refund check will then be issued to the student no later than 14 days after

the credit balance has been noted.
