Previous owner’s inscription. Else fine. $800The rare and very impressive original edition: one of only a few copies we have offered in the past 25 years. Published by the Cambridge University Press in an imposing single volume (a later reprint is broken into two volumes). While numismatics is only one area of its coverage, its treatment of the subject is expert and significant. The coins depicted on the plates are keyed to various collections, many of which are of the highest importance: “The following Per-sons and Institutions possess important collections of Greek coins from South Russia and to most of them as indicated below I am indebted for casts: H.I.H. the Grand Duke Alexander Michailovich; his is perhaps the richest of all ... The Hermitage ... The Historical Museum at Moscow contains Burachkov’s coins ... The Museum of the Odessa Historical and Archaeological Society ... The Countess Uvarov ... General A.L. Bertier-de-la-Garde ... Dr. I.A. Terlecki ... The British Museum ... The Imperial Cabinet at Vienna ....” Clain-Stefanelli 2624*.

It is not in the American Numismatic Society Library, where a number of original Valentine manuscripts reside, nor is it listed in Mayer. The ANS Library does have the photostat version present here, purchased in Kolbe Sale 40 in 1989 for $1300 on a $250 estimate. The only other auction record found is the sale of a similar photostatic copy in the October 1981 Anders Ringberg/Galerie des Monnaies Düssel-dorf auction where it was estimated at 10 but brought 4100 German marks, selling to an absentee bidder. This is only the second or perhaps third copy known to us, all of them old photocopies. The binding of the ANS Library copy is nearly identical to the present example.
