Russian ii
As you know, Russian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet A full listing of the alphabet has been included for your reference, beginning on page 3 In the Reading Lessons which follow, it is assumed that you have completed the Reading Lessons included in Pimsleur’s® Russian I If you have, you will recognize the letters of the Cyrillic alphabet, and you will be able to reproduce the sounds they represent If you have not yet been introduced to the Cyrillic alphabet, we suggest that you go back and begin with the Readings from Russian I
In the reading lessons for Russian II, you will continue to practice the pronunciation of Cyrillic letters and combinations of letters, as well as their use in different words and contexts You may remember that stress in pronunciation can change the sound(s) of Russian vowels, and even some consonants As there is no universal rule as to the stress and patterns of stress with which each word is pronounced, we have indicated where the stress is to be placed by showing the stressed vowel(s) in boldface
introduction
2
Russian ii
For those who are interested, an English trans-lation of the words and sentences making up each lesson has been provided immediately after the page(s) containing the text for that lesson You may enjoy learning some new Russian vocabulary after completing each lesson, but when doing the lessons, first use the text WITHOUT translation It’s important that as you first read through each lesson, you concen-trate only on the recognition and pronunciation of the Cyrillic Also, the cues indicating stress are found only on the page without translation
There are twelve reading lessons for Russian II These can all be found at the end of the program You can either do these lessons along with the units --- for example, a new reading lesson after every two or three units --- or, if you find it more convenient, you can do them all together after completing the thirty units Full instructions for the Readings can also be found at the end of the program

the cyrillic alphabet
The Cyrillic alphabet is comprised of 33 letters, listed in order below, along with a guide to the sounds represented by each letter Many Russian letters (mostly vowels, but also some consonants) have more than one sound, depending on the amount of stress given to the letter or its position in the word The examples listed below in the “Guide to Pronunciation” are APPROXIMATE English equivalents --- as in any language, the pronunciations will vary slightly in different letter combinations
