Season of PossibilityWith all of the fun that winter brings, like Christmas and New Year’s, it is easy to get bogged down in the adverse weather and general gloominess. Spring is a great opportunity to hit the reset button, so to speak. Now is the perfect time to set goals, try something new or learn new skills. Often, fear can be a detractor to our adventurous side. We get scared of failing, of what others might think of us or even just fear change. These are all valid, but there are for more reasons why you should do something new than not. You have more information at your fingertips than ever before. With our smart devices, we have the ability to learn real life skills and knowledge — take advantage of this! Psychologist Rich Walker, who looked at countless event memories, says, “People who engage in a variety of experiences are more likely to retain positive emotions and minimize negative ones than people who have fewer experiences.” Your mental health improves and maintains positivity easily with fun experiences. Nobody is saying you have to jump out of a plane or try your hand at a flying trapeze just to have a new experience. Of course, getting out of your comfort zone doesn’t mean you have to reach heights thousands of feet off the ground. Though, to be honest, trying something that’s foreign to you might just make you feel like you’re high in the sky anyway.

Common Sense Rules for CybersecurityJust like any other public environment, the Internet requires awareness and caution. Just as you use locks to keep criminals out of your home, you also need safeguards to secure your computer. Many of the crimes that occur in real life are now done — or at least facilitated — through the internet.

Below are some common sense rules from the real world that apply in the online world.

• Don’t judge a book by its cover. Cyber criminals hide behind the anonymity of the internet. What you say and do online is visible to others, and it’s not erasable. Don’t communicate or reveal any personal information to strangers online. Personal information includes your name, address, age, phone number, birthday, email address, social security number and insurance policy numbers — even your doctor’s name.

• Look before you leap. Don’t enter contests, join clubs or share your personal information for any reason, unless you know you are on a reputable website. Do not open attachments, click links or respond to email messages from unknown senders or companies that ask for your personal information. Most organizations — banks, charities, universities, companies, etc. — don’t ask for your personal information over email. Beware of requests to update or confirm your personal information.

• All that glitters is not gold. Be wary of emails offering “free” gifts, prizes or vacations. These are tricks designed to get you to give up personal information. Personal information can be pieced together to steal identities, money or credit.

A Message From Leisure CareAs you know, due to ongoing concerns about COVID-19, there have been many crucial changes to our daily routines in order to maintain the health and safety of our residents and staff. Following protocol from the CDC and state regulatory agencies, our activities and outings continue to be on hold until further notice. Instead of our monthly calendar, we are using these pages to provide you with activities and entertainment since we are practicing social distancing.

Please know that we are working hard to keep you connected. For our most recent updates, visit www.leisurecare.com/communication-plan. Please speak with your management team if you have any questions.

Simple Ways To Practice Mindfulness

• Savor a snack. Whether it’s a crisp, fresh apple or a decadent candy bar, enjoy a snack slowly and deliberately. Close your eyes and think about the food’s flavors and textures and the rhythm of your chewing.

• Enjoy nature — even from indoors. Look out your window to study birds and plants. Notice as much detail as you can. Or look at a nature photo from a book or the internet and gaze at it peacefully.

• Set aside specific times of the day to read a meaningful poem, quotation, mantra or prayer.

• Download a free guided meditation app. Search “meditation” in your device’s app store to see available options.

A Dose of Deep BreathingDeep breathing, also known as belly breathing, can help alleviate stress, increase relaxation and lower heart rate and blood pressure. You can do it almost anywhere. Breathe in slowly through your nose for four counts until your abdomen feels fully expanded, hold your breath for one count, then exhale through your mouth for five counts. Experts recommend doing this three times an hour.

Mandala MeditationFrom a Sanskrit word meaning “circle,” a mandala is a popular tool used in meditation, often representing wholeness. You may have seen a mandala without realizing what it was. Simply stated, it is a circular shape filled with repeating geometric patterns. Creating your own mandala — by drawing at least three concentric circles, then filling in the spaces between the circles with various shapes — can be therapeutic and relaxing. Coloring or painting pre-drawn mandalas has the same effect.

Brain Bender: What a DollAmy owns a four-piece set of Russian nesting dolls. Each of the four dolls has her own name—Anastasia, Irina, Katya or Natasha. Each is painted a different color—blue, purple, red or yellow. Using the following clues, can you place the dolls in order from smallest to largest, and determine the color of each one?

• When the dolls are nested, Natasha is only touching one other doll, the purple one.

• Katya is the red doll.

• The blue doll is larger than Irina, but smaller than Katya.

• The second-largest doll is not yellow.
