Boots and a lovely fawn
walking through our yard caught each other’s attention. Boots is enjoying the view from our basement window. She is 3 years old and full of love and spark. After we lost our cat, Mookie, we went to Lollypop to ease the sadness and void. We knew Boots was the one when she went over and sat on our son Jimmy’s lap. She has settled in nicely as part of the family. Jimmy captured this great picture.

Applewood Honey Chicken
Ultimate Grilled Cheese
Sandwiches
Makes 4 sandwiches, serves 4
Ingredients:
1 (20 ounce) package Farm
Rich Smokehouse Applewood
Honey Chicken BBQ
8 (1/4 to 1/2-inch) slices of a
whole grain bread loaf
4 ounces cream cheese,
softened
2 cups shredded sharp
cheddar cheese
2 tomatoes, thinly sliced
1/2 stick butter, melted
Spicy mustard for dipping
(optional)
Directions:
Prepare BBQ according to
package directions. Brush a
large non-stick skillet with
butter and place over
medium-low heat. Working
with two sandwiches at a
time, brush one side of two
pieces of bread with butter.
Spread 1 ounce of cream
cheese on the other side of
each piece of bread. Place the
two pieces of bread (butter
side down) in the pan. Top
each with BBQ, cheese,
tomato slices and more
cheese. Butter two more
slices of bread and place
them over each sandwich
(butter side up). Use a spatula
to smash the sandwiches just
a bit. Flip the sandwiches
over after about 2-4 minutes
or until the bottom pieces of
bread are dark brown. Cook
until the other side of the
bread is dark brown. Remove
to a paper towel lined plate
and repeat process with the
remaining slices of bread and
ingredients to make two more
sandwiches. Serve with spicy
mustard for dipping.
Gluten-Free Doesn’t Mean Grain-Free If you’re building a gluten-free menu, it’s important to include whole grains, which provide many es sential
nutrients. Try some of these options in your meals, from breakfast to dinner, to get a taste of the flavors and
textures that whole, gluten-free grains have to offer:
• Amaranth - Popped like corn or added to soups or a pilaf, this heart-healthy grain adds great
taste and texture.
• Buckwheat - Whether used whole or ground as flour, buckwheat provides a rich, nutty flavor.
• Corn - A classic American staple that is as versatile as it is easy to find.
• Millet - Let it stand alone as a side or bake it into crunchy crackers; millet’s mild flavor ensures that it
plays well w ith other ingredients.
• Oats - Oats themselves are gluten-free, but they’re often processed in places where gluten products are
also made. Make sure your oats are certified as free from cross-contamination.
• Quinoa - This nutrient-rich grain has been a staple in the Andes Mountains for centuries, and it’s gaining
in popularity for its versatility and subtle flavor.
• Brown and Colored Rice - Rice itself, or products made from it, like noodles, can be used to prepare
delicious dishes from around the globe.
• Sorghum - Flour made from this nutrient-packed grain can be used to make everything from pie crust to
pancakes. It can also be popped - it’s a fun treat that looks like mini-popcorn.
• Teff - Tiny teff grains (3,000 grains weigh just one ounce) make a flavorful flour that can be used for
crepes, breads or injera, the spongy flatbread that is a dietary staple in the grain’s native
country of Ethiopia.
• Wild rice - Hearty, nutty and utterly delicious, wild rice is a welcome addition on any plate. Use it as
stuffing, in a salad or simply on its own.

Drive with care everyday
Do not race your car’s engine during start-up.This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside.
Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation.
Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea. The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components.
Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped.
Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs.
Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber.
When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.
Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer. Service Hrs: Mon., Tues., Wed., Fri. 7:30-6; Thurs. 7:30-9; Sat. 8-noon

3 ways to improve indoor air quality all year long
As winter wears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold weather climates to experience some cabin fever. Winter weather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear.
In addition to contributing to cabin fever, winter weather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. While air pollution is something most often associated with densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long winters when windows are often closed for months at a time. Though open windows in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are ways to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of which season it happens to be.
1. Clean the floors: Dirty floors are one of the chief contributors to poor indoor air quality. Dust, dirt, pollen, and pet dander can accumulate on floors, leading to poor air quality and potentially aggravating respiratory conditions such as asthma. When vacuuming, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, which is a uniquely designed mechanical air filter that traps harmful particles such as pollen, pet dander and dust mites. When you finish vacuuming, mop floors to gather any dust or allergens that escaped the vacuum.
2. Control indoor air moisture: Moist air is great for dust mites and mold, both of which are very bad for humans, so do everything you can to maintain healthy levels of indoor air moisture. Dehumidifiers can reduce indoor air moisture and control allergens, but it’s important to take additional steps as
well. When bathing, try to keep a bathroom window open on a slight crack to prevent mold growth. When preparing meals in the kitchen, make use of your exhaust fan. In addition, don’t overwater houseplants, as they can become breeding grounds for mold.
3. Resist synthetic fragrances: A home that smells good tends to feel more pleasant, especially during winter months when windows are closed. But synthetic fragrances, such as those found in detergents and air fresheners, may be providing that welcoming scent at a heavy cost to a home’s inhabitants. Such fragrances may be emitting various chemicals, including volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, into the air, affecting indoor air quality and possibly even human health. When buying laundry products, look for those that are fragrance-free, also choosing home cleaning products that do not include any artificial fragrances.
Indoor air quality tends to suffer in colder months, when windows are closed and doors are open only briefly. But homeowners can take a handful of simple yet effective steps to ensure the air in their homes is healthy all year long.
Mopping after vacuuming can remove any lingering allergens and improve indoor air quality.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
BMI Not a Total Picture of Health DEAR DR. ROACH: About seven years ago, my blood pressure was high, and I was overweight and in a stressful job.
I quit the job, my blood pressure went down, and I lost over 40 pounds. I have kept the weight off all these years. I work part time, standing on my feet about 25 hours a week. My doctor has been happy with me. At my last appointment, I was told my BMI is too high and that I am obese.
Where did this “BMI” come from? I am 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weigh 194 pounds. I am a large-framed woman (I delivered 12- pound babies through NATURAL childbirth!). Now I feel like I should forget it and go back to eating what I want, when I want! -- P.S.
ANSWER: BMI, the body mass index, is a way of determining obesity by standardizing weight for people of different heights. It is equal to weight (in kilograms) divided by height (in meters) squared. BMI predicts the development of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and even overall mortality rates moderately well. It is certainly not a perfect measurement. Someone whose BMI is obese (over 30) might have very little body fat; he or she might be very muscular or have larger bones than another person of the same height.
Some physicians measure waist circumference, since that looks at abdominal fat, and research shows that using both measurements gives a more complete picture of health.
Personally, I congratulate you for getting and keeping off 40 pounds, and think you made a wise investment in your health by finding a less-stressful job. Your BMI is 31, just in the “obese” range. However, women of your BMI but whose waist circumference is less than 31.5 inches (80cm) have a much lower risk of medical complications later.
By the way, having babies that large does indicate an increased risk for Type 2 diabetes later in life. Your doctor hopefully is checking you periodically. Getting regular exercise and eating a good diet reduces your risk for Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, so please don’t get frustrated by this single, incomplete measure of your health.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Last night I washed my face with soap and water. I toweled dry and saw blood dripping from the side of my nose. I figured I must have scrubbed too hard and opened a pore. This pore bled and bled for over an hour before I used styptic powder. That stopped the bleeding instantly. Now I’m afraid to wash that area, as it may start bleeding again. I’m 61. I don’t take any medication except a baby aspirin every night, and Aleve when my arthritis kicks up. Is this common? -- J.R.
ANSWER: No, that isn’t common. It makes me concerned that the pore you think is bleeding actually may be a subtle or early skin condition predisposed to bleeding. The ones I am most concerned about are basal cell and squamous cell cancers. See a dermatologist and get it examined.
Aspirin and naproxen (Aleve) do make bleeding more likely, but I still think you should get it looked at.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) W hen a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A w orking smoke ala rm
doubles your chances of survival, yet more than tw enty percent of American homes are w ithout them. E nergizer and the International Association of Fire
Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families.
The peak time for home fire fatalities is betw een 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., w hen most families are asleep.
Bedrooms Do not trap electrical cords against w alls. Heat can build up, posing a fire hazard. Use only lab-a pproved electric blankets and w armers. M ake
sure cords are not w orn or coming apart. Do not leave electric blankets sw itched on all night unless they are marked “ suitable for all night use.” Keep
bedding, curtains and other combustible items at least three feet aw ay from space heaters. Never smo ke in bed. Replace mattresses made before the
2007 Federal M attress Flammability Standard. By law, mattresses made since then are required to be s afer. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and
outside each sleeping area.

CONSERVE ENERGY THIS W INTER BY CHOOSING THE RIGHT W INDOW S
W inter is upon us, but the w indow hasn’t c losed for homeow ners to keep their heating bills from going through the roof.
While exploring tactics for cutting energy costs, there might be no more critical consideration than w indow s. A home w ith ineffic ient w indow s is almost like a home w ith a hole in the w all -- and installing energy-effic ient w indow s can shave up to 15 percent off heating and cooling bills, according to estimates based on data set forth in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Star Savings Estimates (w w w.energystar.gov/w indow s).
Numerous fac tors determine a w indow ’s energy effic iency. W indow s w ith a low er “ U-Factor,” for example, are preferable in colder regions because they allow less heat to escape.
Here are some other tips to find the best w indow s for your home:
• Consider your conservation goals. One homeow ner may simply w ant greater energy effic iency. Another may be draw n to “ passive” or “ net zero” building practices -- w hose requirements are designed to maintain comfortable temperatures w ith incredibly minimal heating and cooling systems.
• Don’t sacrifice beauty for efficiency. W indow s should be beautiful, functional, durable and energy effic ient.
• Add w indow treatments. Certain w indow treatments also can help maintain comfortable temperatures in a home.
• Consult an expert. Homeow ners should speak w ith a professional w hen selecting w indow s, to explore and identify solutions for their home and c limate.

For over seven years Brittany Bartell has helped administer the Senior Bingo Club at Eighty Parrish Street, the retirement and senior apartments in Canandaigua. The Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua oversees this fun activity one evening each month and Bartell is among those who enjoy socializing with the 60 to 80 residents. Bartell’s involvement was initially prompted by her membership in the Kiwanis Key Club which offers youngsters opportunities to provide service both at school and in the community.
“Being a part of Key Club really helped grow my love for helping others. It taught me to be a proactive member of the community and really just how great our community is,” said Bartell. The Kiwanis Key Club, started in 1925, is an international student-led organization that helps build character and develop leadership skills. It is the oldest and largest service club for High School students in the world. Bartell joined when she was a freshman at Canandaigua Academy and has worked alongside Kiwanis members, not only in their outreach to seniors, but also in fundraising efforts for children.
“Brittany is always willing to help at the Kiwanis-led events at the Salvation Army, Primary School Easter Egg Hunt, and the summer event at Sonnenberg,” said longtime Kiwanis Club member and past club President Marianne Gallagher. “She is a dedicated and focused young woman who exudes the Mission of Kiwanis to ‘Serve the Children of the World,’ and who has developed leadership skills that have enhanced her school and her community. We are extremely proud of her focus and determination to be a contributing member of her community.”
The 18-year old, now in her first year at Finger Lakes Community College, gives even more to her community as a volunteer fire fighter. Bartell began at in the Canandaigua Fire Department in January 2013, joining her father, Richard Bartell, mother, Sonja Bartell, and brother, Bryan Bartell, who are all active. “It was
a proud and scary moment,” recalls Sonja Bartell, an aide to the Canandaigua Fire Chief, when she saw her husband, son, and daughter go into a burning building last year.
“The Canandaigua department consists of a great group of guys and they all bring their own knowledge and experiences to the table. We all share a passion for helping others,” said Brittany, adding, “We have drill nights on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month.” After attending the NYS Fire Academy this past summer Bartell became a certified fire fighter at both the state and national levels.
As a result of Brittany’s demonstrated community and volunteer involvement, good grades, and interest in pursuing a four-year college degree, she received a $1,000 Scholarship to FLCC, awarded in memory of Denett Pimkowski, a local woman who touched many lives through her chosen careers and volunteerism. This award, along with other scholarships to high school seniors in Ontario County, are funded largely by proceeds from the annual Canandaigua Classic Antique Show and Sale, held this year on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at the Finger Lakes Gaming and Race Track in Farmington.
The Canandaigua Classic Antique Show, organized by a committee of volunteers in partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua, presents a quality antique show which also funds grants to non-profit organizations in support of the arts, culture and learning in Ontario County. Grant applications and a discounted admission coupon for the antique show can be downloaded from the show website www.canandaiguaantiquesclassic.org.

EXCELLENCE IN SURGICAL CARE
Did you know that dental implants are frequently the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth? Rather than resting on the gum line like removable dentures, or using adjacent teeth as anchors like fixed bridges, dental implants are long-term replacements.
Thinking about dental implants?
To better serve our patients, we are now accepting Delta Dental, Guardian, Met Life and Blue Cross and Blue Shield dental plans. Youth is a wonderful thing.

Cleaning Made Simple (Family Features) Giving your home a good cleaning doesn’t have to be a big chore. You can make the whole house look and feel fresher by focusing on a few key areas. Bathroom - Freshen up the
bathroom with these simple
cleaning tricks.
Take care of the tub by
scrubbing with baking soda
on a clean, damp sponge.
Rinse, then wipe dry. You can
clean and deodorize your
vinyl shower curtain by
giving it the same baking
soda treatment.
If you have stone, granite or
marble surfaces, use a
cleaner made specifically for
those materials, such as
DuPont(tm) Soap Scum
Remover or DuPont Mold and
Mildew Stain Remover for
natural stone. Some general
purpose cleaners may
contain acids, bleach or
ammonia that could break
down the sealer on natural
stone, making the surface
more likely to stain.
Brighten up the bathroom
by cleaning the w indow,
m irrors, light fixtures and
even the light bulbs w ith
multipurpose surface wipes.

On Friday I was at
Walmart in Henrietta. My
friend and I notice a sign for
a special on a mani-pedi. I
said “Should I?” And she
said go for it. First I had my
first Pedicure ever. Kim did a
wonderful job. I felt like a
queen. My friend took
pictures and said to me
“Now that’s off your bucket
list.” I was unaware that one
of the customers asked my
friend what that meant. She
explained that I have cancer
and had never had a
pedicure. Next I had a
wonderful manicure and
had more fun picking out
colors of nail polish. When I
was done the manicurist
said there’d be no charge.
Everyone in there chipped
in to pay for me! I was so
surprised. They also gave
me a $15 gift certificate to
Walmart. What a wonderful
surprise. I’d like to thank
those who were at Regal
Nails at the Henrietta
Walmart!
So you work for this company for 6 years, show up every day, do any job that was asked of you, work nights, weekends, holidays, whenever needed, never have an issue with a fellow employee, have the respect of fellow employees, never an issue with a customer, never do any damage to equipment, told you’re an outstanding employee and amazing work ethic but you get terminated because they’re making changes in 2016. So that’s the American dream? Does everything right and it still doesn’t matter? Thanks guys!!!
We had a party at our home in an east side suburb last night. Guests included members of a local private school football team. As they were leaving, neighbors (who know us well and have our phone number) called the police. When you see these young men in the newspaper being
lauded for their grades and athletic achievements, I hope you are all ashamed of yourselves. Would you have called 911 if they were white? The police officers who responded were thrilled to meet these well-known local athletes. These boys were walking to their cars. And you called the police. Disgusting.
Shame on people who book an appointment with a hair stylist and then fail to show up, or even call to say you can’t keep the appointment. It is more disgraceful when the appointment is for three or more hours. You are stealing money from the stylist, who more than likely is paid on commission, and cannot fill the time with someone else. Have consideration for a person who is working to make a living!
On January 16th about 10am, my brother was in a terrible accident, caused by a station wagon cutting in front of him. Swerving to miss this person, he crashed head on into another car! The person left the scene leaving behind two people who were taken to emergency! If anyone witnessed this accident, please contact Monroe Co. Sheriff’s Dept. This person is a menace to the roads and needs to be caught before someone is killed!
Thanks very much to the
person (s) who found &
turned in my keys at Tops!
I wanted to say “Thank
You So Much” to the
gentleman who helped me
and my children change
our windshield wipers in
the Geneseo Dollar Tree
parking lot the Sunday
before Christmas. Thank
you for also teaching my
son Trevor how to remove
the old wiper blades for
future reference.
Sincerely,
A very grateful
single mom!
The residents of Lakeville
Estates want to give a huge
THANK YOU to all the local
merchants who were so
generous with their
donations of gift cards and
merchandise to use as door
prizes at our Community
Christmas Party.
Gratefully Yours,
Residents of
Lakeville Estates
Many thanks to the
beautiful young woman
who took her winnings and
purchased a $40 Wegmans
gift card for my husband
and me to make our new
year happier!

How To Banish Stress • Try exercise: Exercise can be very good at pumping endorphins through the body, which provide a feel-good sensation. Exercise can also work the tension out of the body and give your mind something else to think about.
• Do something you enjoy: Maybe you enjoy the pampering of a massage or pedicure, or the thrill of being out on the golf course. Turn your mind to a task you enjoy and take some time out to do it. A life balanced by work and enjoyable activities could be less stressful.
• Talk to a doctor: Some bio-feedback or counseling may guide you through ways to alleviate stress. A family physician may also think it’s a good idea to prescribe medication, primarily if stress is short-term from a traumatic event. You can work with doctors to develop a program that works for you and your overall health.

Share the responsibilities. W hile the days of the single-income household may be a thing of the past, many of the conventions of those days remain. Women may still feel the responsibility to cook family meals, c lean up after the children and make it to all of their children’s sporting events or other school-related events. But those responsibilit ies should be shared so w omen can ensure they’re giving both their careers and families the attention each deserves. Devise a schedule w here both parents tackle such responsibilities equally so each parent know s w hen they have some w iggle room. For example, if your husband routinely cooks on Tuesdays, then you know you w on’t need to rush home on Tuesday night and you might be able to stay at the office a little later to w ork on a projec t or catch up on w ork. Such sharing and sc heduling c an considerably reduce the stress of juggling a family and a career.
