RURAL DEVELOPMENT SHORT COURSES

WELCOME TO the Borders College Rural Development Short Course Programme. Our aim is to provide courses that are relevant, topical and supportive of our clients’ needs and an example of the course provision on offer is reflected within this publication. This short course programme compliments the varied sector-specific courses delivered to our clients.

If the course you are interested in is not listed in this booklet, please ask! This publication contains dates for some courses however other dates are added throughout the year. If the dates listed in this publication are not convenient please contact us to obtain an updated list and to discuss your requirements.

These courses are delivered by our team of professional trainers at a range of quality venues, selected to accommodate the requirements of our clients across the Borders and in Edinburgh. However, these courses can also be delivered at your own premises and on an individual or an organisational basis as flexibility is our key strength.

Individual Learning Accounts (ILA’s) are for people who are 16 or over and living in Scotland. You can apply for an ILA if you are not in education, do not have a degree or above and are not taking part in a National Training programme (Modern Apprenticeship, Get Ready to Work or Training for Work). You must also have an income of £22,000 a year or less, or be on benefits to be eligible to get up to £200 towards the cost of learning or training with an Individual Learning Account from Skills Development Scotland.

Individual Learning Accounts are available if you are interested in learning something new or brushing up your skills. All Terrain Vehicles (ATV)

Course Content This is a basic course designed for the beginner wishing to operate and maintain an ATV safely over a range of ground conditions with an awareness of the legal requirements. Although designed for fun as well as hard work, these machines do have limitations and are a potential hazard if operators are not trained correctly. These courses are NPTC assessed.

Entry Requirements There are no formal entry requirements.

All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) Refresher

Course Content This is a course designed for the experienced user who wishes to update their operational ATV skills over a range of ground conditions with an awareness of the legal requirements.

These machines do have limitations and are a potential hazard if operators are not trained correctly. Successful completion will lead to a Borders College attendance certificate.

Entry Requirements The operator should already hold a recognised ATV qualification.

Duration Half-day course

Attendance This half day training course is available, both on and off site, at various locations throughout the Borders. Please contact the college for further details and future commencement dates.

Chainsaw Maintenance Cross-cut and Felling

Course Content A very practical hands on course where candidates will practice a range of chainsaw operations such as felling, delimbing and cross cutting. After 3 days of demonstration and practice a one day assessment will be carried out and successful candidates will be awarded a certificate of competence through LANTRA.

This course is an ideal starting point for those interested in using Chainsaws or those who have used Chainsaws previously but have no formal qualifications.


Duration 24 hours

Attendance Four-day course with certificate of competence awarded on completion from LANTRA.

Refresher Chainsaw Maintenance Cross-cut and Felling

Course Content 2 day refresher for those who have a certificate from LANTRA or NPTC and who wish to update their skills with the felling of small trees with chainsaws.

If it is more than 3 years since you completed your training it is a recommendation that you complete a refresher course.

Entry Requirements Candidates must hold a recognised chainsaw certificate prior to entering this course.

Duration 12 hours

Pesticide Application (PA1)

Course Content This short course covers health and safety legislation, understanding chemical labels, safe storage and use of chemicals, safety clothing and care and maintenance of equipment in preparation for candidates sitting their PA1 test. An on-line test will also be arranged for candidates and the use of our facilities is included in the cost.

Entry Requirements No formal entry requirements.

Duration 6 hours

Attendance One-day course with attendance certificate on completion.

Pesticide Application: Ground Crop Sprayers (PA2)

Course Content Key topics include: legal requirements, checks prior to use, application rates, calibration, safe operation, general maintenance, safety clothing and equipment.

Entry Requirements Candidates must hold a PA1 certificate prior to entering this course.

Duration 6 hours

Attendance One-day course and test facilities and test will be arranged for the candidate after training.





Pesticide Application: Knapsack Sprayers (PA6)

Course Content Key topics include: the safe operation, maintenance and calibration of knapsack sprayers.

Reference will also be made to the range of legislation and codes of practice to ensure the safety of operators, general public and the environment.

Entry Requirements Candidates must hold a PA1 certificate prior to entering this course.

Duration 6 hours

Attendance One day course with attendance certificate on completion. Test facilities and test will be arranged for the candidate after training.

Deer Management (DMQ) Level 1

Course Content The aim of the Standard and related assessments is to enable candidates to demonstrate their understanding of basic deer management principles and to show competence in legally, safely and humanely culling deer, and dealing with carcasses.

The Deer Stalking Certificate level 1 Assessments are a series of tests of knowledge and skill which must be passed before a Certificate can be granted. The assessments are conducted by a qualified team of assessors.

To be awarded the Deer Stalking Certificate Level 1 you must demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas:-

Deer Biology and Ecology - the life and reproductive cycles, habitat requirements and behaviour of the six species of wild deer.

Topics include: The Law, stalking techniques and taking the shot, deer identification, safety, shooting, trained hunter.


Duration 12 hours

Attendance Five x two-hour sessions plus one two-hour test.

Thereafter arrangements are made for a practical shooting assessment.

Fox and Rabbit Control by Snaring

Course Content The course will include the relevant EU, UK and Scottish Law, Equipment, Best Practice, Record Keeping and Animal Welfare.

Successful candidates will receive a certificate to show they have completed an approved course, and will be added to the GWCT database.


Duration 4 hours

Attendance Morning session of approximately 4 hours.





Mole Trapping

Course Content Ideally suited to estate workers, greenkeepers and groundsmen involved in pest control. The course covers risk assessment and safe use of gassing products.

The course covers breeding habits, diets, siting and setting traps and the safe use of tablets in mole control including COSHH and Risk Assessment.


Duration 3 hours

City and Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Aluminium Phosphide for Vertebrate Pest Control

Course Content This course covers the legal requirements related to the use of Aluminium Phosphide. It is designed for all those using Aluminium Phosphide for Pest Control. The qualification is divided into 2 parts:- Understanding the principles of the Safe Use of Aluminium Phosphide and Carrying out the safe use of Aluminium Phosphide for vertebrate pest control, and a test will be arranged at a later date.

Drystone Dyking

Course Content A practical course designed for the completed beginner and covers site preparation, wall construction, stone cutting and safe use of tools. All instruction is conducted outdoor in field conditions, weather permitting. Participants will construct a complete section of walling from foundation to copping, under the guidance of experienced instructors.

Attendance Two-day course with attendance certificate on completion.

Brush Cutting/Clearance Saw Operation and Maintenance

Course Content Covering operation and maintenance of brush cutters, clearance saws and strimmers, the course content includes: carrying out risk assessment, personal protective clothing, safe operation and fault finding.


Duration 6 hours

Attendance One-day session with option of NPTC assessment at a later date.





Stihl Saw Operation and Maintenance

Course Content A practical course, which covers the operation and maintenance of stihl saws used for cutting both metal and stone. The course covers, operating principles, safety, changing cutting discs, basic fault-finding and minor repairs.


Duration 3 hours

Attendance Half-day session with attendance certificate on completion.

Garden Machinery Operation and Maintenance

Course Content As garden machinery becomes more expensive and sophisticated, effective operation and maintenance becomes more crucial. This 2-day training course provides the skill and knowledge to ensure that machinery is operated and maintained correctly, reducing down time and the cost of repairs.

The course will cover routine servicing, daily maintenance and fault finding.


Duration 12 hours






Abrasive wheels

Course Content This course is designed for anyone who will be required to change or dress a grinding wheel on a portable or fixed grinder. The content of the course covers current legislation, classification, types and speeds of abrasive wheels, methods of mounting and testing, provision of guarding, maintenance and safety.

Attendance Half-day course with attendance certificate on completion.

Welding: Oxyacetylene

Course Content A beginners course, covering connecting up the welding plant correctly, start up and shut down procedures, demonstration and practice of welding and brazing of mild steel.

These skills could be put to a variety of uses from reducing your car repair bills to making or modifying pieces of equipment around the home or farm.

Entry Requirements It would be preferable for students to have some experience with Oxyacetylene welding before attending this course but it is not compulsory.

Duration 6 hours






Welding: Manual Metal Arc (MMA)

Course Content A basic starter course covering welder settings, rod sizes and safety. The course includes demonstration and practice of horizontal fillet, butt and tee joints using 2mm to 10mm steel plate.

So many items, which have to be discarded due to damage or wear could easily be brought back to life with the odd weld here and there.

Welding: Metal Inert Gas (MIG)

Course Content MIG welding is a practical hands on course for beginners.

MIG welding equipment is becoming so much more accessible for everyone due to low cost and simplicity of operation that it is becoming an essential tool for every handyperson.

Entry Requirements It would be preferable for students to have some experience with MMA or Oxyacetylene before attending this course but it is not compulsory.

Duration 6 hours






Forklift Truck Driving

Course Content Designed for new operators of forklift trucks to enable them to comply with the relevant codes of practice. Course content: safe driving, accurate handling using correct procedures and loading materials on and off vehicles. The course covers both pallet and bulk handling with a Rough Terrain Forklift.

Entry Requirements Suitable for new forklift operators.

Duration 18 hours

Attendance Three day course with certification and ID cards approved by LANTRA awarded on successful completion.

Forklift Truck Driving Two Day Course

Course Content Designed for existing operators of forklift trucks to enable them to comply with the relevant codes of practice. Course content: safe driving, accurate handling using correct procedures and loading materials on and off vehicles. The course covers both pallet and bulk handling with a Rough Terrain Forklift.

Entry Requirements Suitable for existing forklift operators.

Duration 12 hours

Attendance Two-day course with certification and ID cards approved by LANTRA awarded on successful completion.





Forklift Truck Driving Refresher (1-day)

Course Content This course is designed for those who wish to refresh their skills on agricultural forklift trucks to enable them to comply with the relevant codes of practice. It covers safe driving, accurate handling using correct procedures and loading materials on and off vehicles.

Entry Requirements This course is suitable for existing and new forklift operators.

Duration 6 hours

Attendance One-day course Successful completion of this course will lead to a LANTRA certificate.

Tractor Driving for Beginners

Course Content This practical course covers layout of the tractor, its controls, maintenance and minor adjustments. Operation of the tractor using all controls correctly and the mounting and hitching of machinery. Health and safety requirements for tractor driving will also be covered.

British Horse Society Riding and Road Safety

Course Content Aimed to train the horse and rider to ride safely on the roads. The first day will cover the theory and practical elements required for the test, which will be taken on the following day.

Certificate of Competence in the Transport of Animals by Road (Short Journeys)

Course Content This qualification is a requirement of the Animal Welfare: Implementation of EU Welfare in Transport Regulation (EC)No1/2005.

If you transport animals over 65km and under 8 hours for a commercial purpose you must have a certificate of competence.

It is a NPTC/City and Guilds computer based multiple choice test paper and candidates must achieve an 80% pass to gain the qualification.

Categories are: Cattle, Sheep, Cattle/Sheep combined, Pigs, Poultry, Horses, Goats and Game.

17th Edition (including 2012 update) BS7671: 2008 (2011) Wiring Regulations City & Guilds 2382-12

Course Content This course is for electricians who need to update their skills in all areas of IEE 17th Edition of wiring regulations. The course covers all aspects of the regulations. On completion of the course candidates will have the opportunity to take the City and Guilds 2382 – 20 GOALA exam.

Entry Requirements Open to qualified electricians.

Duration 8 hours

Attendance These courses will be ‘self directed’, using the Colleges Virtual Learning Environment which can be accessed online from home. The candidates will attend a 3 hour twilight class overview/introduction to the 17th Edition Regulations and a further 1 hour refresher 4-6 weeks later prior to sitting their GOLA (which will likely be an afternoon). The candidates will also be able to use a simulated multiple choice question paper online.

Two Day City & Guilds PAT Testing Course - 2377-22

Course Content Theory based City & Guilds course for the In-Service Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment.

The course is designed for anyone who is responsible for the maintenance of portable appliances in a work environment or anyone who would like to take up PAT testing as a career would benefit from this course.

Entry Requirements Those applicants that do not have an electrical background should complete the one day Electrical Awareness course prior to commencement of this course.

Duration 12 hours

Attendance Two-day course with a GOALA exam in the afternoon of the second day.

Industrial Tailored Awards – ‘Electrical Awareness’ and ‘Safe Isolation’ Course

Course Content This course would be delivered on site and the cost of this would be confirmed after an assessment of the company’s individual requirements.

The purpose of this course is designed for non-electrical persons who require general awareness and knowledge of electrical systems. Ideal for Maintenance staff, Production Managers and non-electrical employees engaged in day to day repairs.

The course content will include Electrical Awareness in particular to the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. Safe isolation procedures and Safe working practice.

Scottish Personal Licence Holders Qualification

Course Content Any member of staff authoring sales of alcohol from licenced premises is legally required to hold a Personal Licence Holders Qualification. This course assists in complying with the training requirement.

Entry Requirements There are no formal entry requirements, however, proof of identification eg, passport, driving licence, required prior to registration.

Duration 6.25 hours

Wines and Spirits Education Trust Award (Level 2)

Course Content Intended for individuals with little or no knowledge of a broad range of alcoholic beverages. This course covers: classification of wines, wine terminology, production of wine and storage and service.

Entry Requirements This course is suitable for those involved in the customer service and sales function of hospitality, retailing and wholesaling of wines and spirits.

REHIS Introduction to Food Hygiene

Course Content This course is particularly suitable for staff who assist or advise clients to prepare, eat, buy or store food. Course content includes: bacteria, causes of food poisoning and prevention and personal hygiene.

Half-day course. Certificate approved by (REHIS) Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland issued on completion.

Course Content Covering all aspects of basic food hygiene, bacteria and poisoning, safe working practices, common pests and food safety legislation, this course is essential for anyone working in the food industry.

Attendance One-day course including multiple-choice examination. REHIS certificate awarded on successful completion.





REHIS Intermediate Food Hygiene

Course Content Building on the knowledge gained in the Elementary Food Hygiene course, subjects covered include: Food Borne Infections, Food Poisoning & Contamination and Hygiene Legislation.

24-hour course including short answer examination. REHIS certificate awarded on successful completion.

Entry Requirements To undertake this qualification you must hold an Elementary Food Hygiene certificate.

Duration 27 hours

Attendance Nine x three-hour sessions.

REHIS Advanced Diploma in Food Hygiene

Course Content This course is intended for managers, hygiene specialists and for trainers who wish to present Elementary Food Hygiene courses. It consists of an essay type written examination plus submission of assignments. A substantial amount of study time is required.

Entry Requirements People employed in a supervisory/ management role in a food production environment. Learners should already have REHIS (Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland) Intermediate Food Hygiene or other qualifications as approved by REHIS.

Duration 36 hours

Attendance Five full-day course plus assignments and examination. REHIS diploma awarded on successful completion.





Moving and Handling

Course Content Specifically designed for workers in the care sector, this course covers aspects of theory as well as practical sessions on the following topics: HASAWA 1974, MHO Regulations 1992, employer and employee responsibilities and the principles of safe manual handling.


Duration 6 hours

Attendance One-day course. Attendance certificate awarded on successful completion.

Health and Safety Awareness

Course Content This course covers general aspects of Health and Safety that can be applied to all work places however it is especially geared towards Health and Social Care workers and includes working in a client’s home setting.

Attendance Half-day course. Attendance certificate awarded on successful completion.





HSE Accredited Emergency First Aid at Work

Course Content This course is ideal for smaller workplaces that present few health and safety risks and is suitable for nominated Emergency First Aiders or anyone wanting a comprehensive one day first aid course.

Course Content:

Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations, managing an incident, the priorities of first aid, treatment of the unconscious casualty, resuscitation, shock, bleeding, common workplace injuries.


Duration 6 hours

Attendance One-day course. Continuous assessment by trainer and a 1st4Solutions Ltd certificate, valid for three years, is issued on successful completion.

Accredited First Aid at Work Course

Course Content This course covers the practical skills needed by a first aider in the modern workplace. The course will give you the confidence and knowledge to deal with first aid emergencies and is suitable for workplace first aiders, or anyone wanting a comprehensive first aid course.

The course will give you the knowledge and confidence to deal with a first aid emergency in the workplace.

Course Content:

Accidents and illness, using a first aid kit, simple record keeping, treatment of an unconscious casualty, heart attacks, resuscitation, shock, choking, bleeding,

burns and scalds, poisoning, fractures, seizures, asthma, severe allergic reaction, eye injuries, low blood sugar, fainting.


Duration 18 hours

Attendance Three-day course. After completing a final assessment successful candidates will receive an AOFA approved certificate valid for three years. This course is legally compliant with the current Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. Upon successful completion of this three-day course, first aiders receive certification to allow them to practice for three years after which a re-qualification course becomes necessary. It is strongly recommended that you update your skills by taking an annual refresher.

Accredited First Aid at Work 2 Day Re-Exam

Course Content This course updates the first aid skills for people who need to renew their statutory first aid at work certificate and whose existing certificate is still valid.

This course is suitable for people wishing to renew a valid first aid at work certificate.

First aiders whose certificates have expired for more than 28 days must attend the three-day first aid at work course.

Entry Requirements Clients must provide the organisation with a copy of their three day Accredited First Aid at Work certificate prior to course commencement.

Duration 12 hours

Attendance Two-day course. After completing the final assessment successful candidates will receive an AOFA certificate valid for three years. Clients must provide the organisation with a copy of their three day Accredited First Aid at Work certificate prior to the course commencement.

Course Content This course will give you all the necessary first aid skills to deal with a whole range of sporting injuries.

This course would suite anyone involved in sporting activities – from referees and coaches to players.

You will learn how to deal with the type of injuries and medical emergencies that can happen during sporting activities.

Outdoor First Aid Training

Course Content A course that conforms to the requirements of the MLTUK, BCU, RYA and other outdoor governing bodies. On this course we focus on dealing with incidents far from medical help with the minimal equipment you would carry while participating in or leading outdoor activities. Again the emphasis is on practical skills with plenty of hands-on practice including lots of outdoor scenarios.

Our first aid courses are designed specifically for workers operating in outdoor, remote or wilderness environments. The training focuses on problem prevention and effective patient management when access to definitive care is difficult or delayed.

Assess and prioritise a first aid incidentDeal with the principals of incident managementDeal with an unconscious casualtyCarry out resuscitation (CPR)Control bleeding and manage shockMaintain communications with emergency organisationsMaintain recordscarry out evacuations if necessaryUse and maintain first aid kitsUse alternative first aid methods, where first aid kits are not sufficient


Duration 6 hours

Attendance One-day course. Six-hour course with continuous assessment by trainer and an AOFA Accredited certificate, valid for three years, is issued on successful completion of the course.

World Host – The Principles of Customer Service

Course Content Borders College is now facilitating World Host training, the new national government campaign designed to increase the awareness of high quality experiences for visitors coming to Scotland.

With Homecoming Scotland 2014 fast approaching, businesses across a wide variety of sectors will be looking for trained staff who will be equipped to meet the demands and expectations of visitors choosing Scotland as a destination.

A one day course which provides a gold standard in training for anyone wishing to work in business that relies on day-to-day interaction with customers, this Hospitality and Tourism industry endorsed course is aimed at Operational Customer Service Staff

At the end of the course the participants will have an understanding of the importance of excellent customer service skills, be able to describe and demonstrate the necessary skills to make communications effective and describe the value of Tourism at both a local and national level. The skills and techniques learnt on the course are the principles of service professionalism.

Payment
