Introduction

RURAL DEVELOPMENT SHORT COURSES

WELCOME TO the Borders College Rural Development Short Course Programme. Our aim is to provide courses that are relevant, topical and supportive of our clients’ needs and an example of the course provision on offer is reflected within this publication. This short course programme compliments the varied sector-specific courses delivered to our clients.

If the course you are interested in is not listed in this booklet, please ask! This publication contains dates for some courses however other dates are added throughout the year. If the dates listed in this publication are not convenient please contact us to obtain an updated list and to discuss your requirements.

These courses are delivered by our team of professional trainers at a range of quality venues, selected to accommodate the requirements of our clients across the Borders and in Edinburgh. However, these courses can also be delivered at your own premises and on an individual or an organisational basis as flexibility is our key strength.

Get up to £200 towards the cost of your course!

Individual Learning Accounts (ILA’s) are for people who are 16 or over and living in Scotland. You can apply for an ILA if you are not in education, do not have a degree or above and are not taking part in a National Training programme (Modern Apprenticeship, Get Ready to Work or Training for Work). You must also have an income of £22,000 a year or less, or be on benefits to be eligible to get up to £200 towards the cost of learning or training with an Individual Learning Account from Skills Development Scotland.

Individual Learning Accounts are available if you are interested in learning something new or brushing up your skills. All Terrain Vehicles (ATV)

Course Content This is a basic course designed for the beginner wishing to operate and maintain an ATV safely over a range of ground conditions with an awareness of the legal requirements. Although designed for fun as well as hard work, these machines do have limitations and are a potential hazard if operators are not trained correctly. These courses are NPTC assessed.

Entry Requirements There are no formal entry requirements.

Duration 6 hours

All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) Refresher

Course Content This is a course designed for the experienced user who wishes to update their operational ATV skills over a range of ground conditions with an awareness of the legal requirements.

These machines do have limitations and are a potential hazard if operators are not trained correctly. Successful completion will lead to a Borders College attendance certificate.

Entry Requirements The operator should already hold a recognised ATV qualification.

Duration Half-day course

Chainsaw Maintenance Cross-cut and Felling

Course Content A very practical hands on course where candidates will practice a range of chainsaw operations such as felling, delimbing and cross cutting. After 3 days of demonstration and practice a one day assessment will be carried out and successful candidates will be awarded a certificate of competence through LANTRA.

This course is an ideal starting point for those interested in using Chainsaws or those who have used Chainsaws previously but have no formal qualifications.

Refresher Chainsaw Maintenance Cross-cut and Felling

Course Content 2 day refresher for those who have a certificate from LANTRA or NPTC and who wish to update their skills with the felling of small trees with chainsaws.

If it is more than 3 years since you completed your training it is a recommendation that you complete a refresher course.

Entry Requirements Candidates must hold a recognised chainsaw certificate prior to entering this course.

Pesticide Application (PA1)

Course Content This short course covers health and safety legislation, understanding chemical labels, safe storage and use of chemicals, safety clothing and care and maintenance of equipment in preparation for candidates sitting their PA1 test. An on-line test will also be arranged for candidates and the use of our facilities is included in the cost.

Course Content Key topics include: legal requirements, checks prior to use, application rates, calibration, safe operation, general maintenance, safety clothing and equipment.

Reference will also be made to the range of legislation and codes of practice to ensure the safety of operators, general public and the environment.

Deer Management (DMQ) Level 1

Course Content The aim of the Standard and related assessments is to enable candidates to demonstrate their understanding of basic deer management principles and to show competence in legally, safely and humanely culling deer, and dealing with carcasses.

The Deer Stalking Certificate level 1 Assessments are a series of tests of knowledge and skill which must be passed before a Certificate can be granted. The assessments are conducted by a qualified team of assessors.

To be awarded the Deer Stalking Certificate Level 1 you must demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas:-

Deer Biology and Ecology - the life and reproductive cycles, habitat requirements and behaviour of the six species of wild deer.

Topics include: The Law, stalking techniques and taking the shot, deer identification, safety, shooting, trained hunter.

Entry Requirements There are no formal entry requirements.

Duration 12 hours

Attendance Five x two-hour sessions plus one two-hour test.

Thereafter arrangements are made for a practical shooting assessment.

Fox and Rabbit Control by Snaring

Course Content The course will include the relevant EU, UK and Scottish Law, Equipment, Best Practice, Record Keeping and Animal Welfare.

Successful candidates will receive a certificate to show they have completed an approved course, and will be added to the GWCT database.

Mole Trapping

Course Content Ideally suited to estate workers, greenkeepers and groundsmen involved in pest control. The course covers risk assessment and safe use of gassing products.

The course covers breeding habits, diets, siting and setting traps and the safe use of tablets in mole control including COSHH and Risk Assessment.

City and Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Aluminium Phosphide for Vertebrate Pest Control

Course Content This course covers the legal requirements related to the use of Aluminium Phosphide. It is designed for all those using Aluminium Phosphide for Pest Control. The qualification is divided into 2 parts:- Understanding the principles of the Safe Use of Aluminium Phosphide and Carrying out the safe use of Aluminium Phosphide for vertebrate pest control, and a test will be arranged at a later date.

Course Content A practical course designed for the completed beginner and covers site preparation, wall construction, stone cutting and safe use of tools. All instruction is conducted outdoor in field conditions, weather permitting. Participants will construct a complete section of walling from foundation to copping, under the guidance of experienced instructors.

Welding: Oxyacetylene

Course Content A beginners course, covering connecting up the welding plant correctly, start up and shut down procedures, demonstration and practice of welding and brazing of mild steel.

These skills could be put to a variety of uses from reducing your car repair bills to making or modifying pieces of equipment around the home or farm.

Entry Requirements It would be preferable for students to have some experience with Oxyacetylene welding before attending this course but it is not compulsory.

Welding: Manual Metal Arc (MMA)

Course Content A basic starter course covering welder settings, rod sizes and safety. The course includes demonstration and practice of horizontal fillet, butt and tee joints using 2mm to 10mm steel plate.

Course Content MIG welding is a practical hands on course for beginners.

MIG welding equipment is becoming so much more accessible for everyone due to low cost and simplicity of operation that it is becoming an essential tool for every handyperson.

Entry Requirements It would be preferable for students to have some experience with MMA or Oxyacetylene before attending this course but it is not compulsory.

Certificate of Competence in the Transport of Animals by Road (Short Journeys)

Course Content This qualification is a requirement of the Animal Welfare: Implementation of EU Welfare in Transport Regulation (EC)No1/2005.

If you transport animals over 65km and under 8 hours for a commercial purpose you must have a certificate of competence.

It is a NPTC/City and Guilds computer based multiple choice test paper and candidates must achieve an 80% pass to gain the qualification.

Accredited First Aid at Work Course

Course Content This course covers the practical skills needed by a first aider in the modern workplace. The course will give you the confidence and knowledge to deal with first aid emergencies and is suitable for workplace first aiders, or anyone wanting a comprehensive first aid course.

The course will give you the knowledge and confidence to deal with a first aid emergency in the workplace.

Course Content:

Accidents and illness, using a first aid kit, simple record keeping, treatment of an unconscious casualty, heart attacks, resuscitation, shock, choking, bleeding,

burns and scalds, poisoning, fractures, seizures, asthma, severe allergic reaction, eye injuries, low blood sugar, fainting.

Duration 18 hours

Attendance Three-day course. After completing a final assessment successful candidates will receive an AOFA approved certificate valid for three years. This course is legally compliant with the current Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. Upon successful completion of this three-day course, first aiders receive certification to allow them to practice for three years after which a re-qualification course becomes necessary. It is strongly recommended that you update your skills by taking an annual refresher.

Outdoor First Aid Training

Course Content A course that conforms to the requirements of the MLTUK, BCU, RYA and other outdoor governing bodies. On this course we focus on dealing with incidents far from medical help with the minimal equipment you would carry while participating in or leading outdoor activities. Again the emphasis is on practical skills with plenty of hands-on practice including lots of outdoor scenarios.

Our first aid courses are designed specifically for workers operating in outdoor, remote or wilderness environments. The training focuses on problem prevention and effective patient management when access to definitive care is difficult or delayed.
