Bridging the Digital Divide
Implementation of Community Broadband Centres
• Community Broadband Centres had been set up to provide collective community internet access to underserved areas identified under the Universal Service Provision (USP) programme
• Each CBC is equiped with IT equipments and personal computers connected to internet broadband access. Software and training are also provided
• Setting up of these CBCs help to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural communities
• Target is to set up a CBC in each underserved area identified under the USP programme
1Malaysia Netbook Distribution
Bridging the Digital Divide
• Implemented to increase the broadband penetration rate and also to increase the ownership and usage of computer amongst the people in the rural and suburban areas
• Distribution of these computers help to increase the ICT literacy and hence decrease the digital divide between towns and rural areas.
• Implemented in 3 phases• Phase 1 and phase 2 completed with 472,900 netbooks
distributed to students and low income citizens in rural and suburban areas
• Another 527,100 netbooks are being distributed under Phase 3
• to increase the broadband coverage and penetration especially in rural areas
• Main features are Provision of Broadband access of within 2-4 Mbps to selected villages and backhaul link either through fixed or wireless network.
• Through this implementation, the broadband access especially to rural areas is widen and receivers of 1Malaysia netbooks would benefit from the availability of broadband access
• KTW is also the nucleus in implementation of digital district that use the approach of block building at the district level in the development of the Digital State and thus the Digital Nation
