CHAMPIONSHIP

(PROGRAMME SCHEDULE)

Taekwondo is a Korean Martial Art, characterized by its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques. Taekwondo was developed during the 1940s and 1950s by Korean martial artists with experience in martial arts such as karate, Chinese martial arts, and indigenous Korean martial arts traditions such as Taekkyeon, Subak, and Gwonbeop. The oldest governing body for taekwondo is the Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA), formed in 1959 through a collaborative effort by representatives from the nine original kwans, or martial arts schools, in Korea. The main International Organizational bodies for taekwondo today are the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), founded by Choi Hong Hi in 1966, and the partnership of the Kukkiwon and World Taekwondo (WT, formerly WTF), founded in 1972 and 1973 respectively by the Korea Taekwondo Association. Gyeorugi, a type of full-contact sparring, has been an Olympic event since 2000. The governing body for taekwondo in the Olympics and Paralympics is World Taekwondo. The main reason behind the popularity of Taekwondo over other Martial Arts is that the kicks predominate in the art. There is more use application of kicks rather than punches. This gives an added advantage of longer, useful reach, more power and force in launching attacks. Taekwondo is one of the most popular and practiced martial arts in India. Jimmy R. Jagtiani is considered to be the first person to have introduced taekwondo in India and is sometimes referred to as the father of Indian taekwondo. Jagtiani was born and raised in Vietnam where he received a 2nd Dan rank from the Oh Do Kwan Academy in Vietnam in 1970. In 1974 during the most brutal phase Vietnam War Jagtiani immigrated to his family's homeland in India. Jagtiani settled in Lucknow, India. In 1975 Jagtiani began teaching taekwondo to police personnel in India. This marked the first taekwondo instruction given in India by a resident of India.

The Barak Valley is located in the southern region of the Indian state of Assam. The main city of the valley is Silchar. The region is named after the Barak River. The Barak valley mainly consists of three administrative districts of Assam State - namely Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi. Among these three districts, Cachar belonged to the Kachari Kingdom before the British Raj, whereas Karimganj and Hailakandi belonged to the Sylhet district of then East Pakistan. Etymologically the name "Barak" has been derived from the Dimasa words 'Bra' & 'Kro'. Bra means bifurcation and Kro upper portion/stream. The river Barak is bifurcated near Haritikar in the Karimganj district into Surma River and Kushiyara River, both flowing in Bangladesh. The upstream of this bifurcated river was called Brakro by the local Dimasa people. Over the years, Brakro got converted into Barak. Silchar is the headquarters of Cachar District in the state of Assam in India. It is the second largest city of the state in terms of population and municipal area. The area of Silchar town is 15.75 km. The three districts of Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj in Southern Assam is situated between 240 8’ N - 250 8’N Latitudes and 92015’E - 930 15’E Longitudes. The valley is bounded by the North Cachar Hills District of Assam and the Jaintia Hill District of Meghalaya in the North, the states of Mizoram and Manipur in the South and East, and by the state of Tripura and the Sylhet District of Bangladesh in the West. The official language of the Barak Valley is Bengali. The people are of largely Bengali descent and a majority speaks Bengali and Sylheti.
