New taxiways and runway extension are taking shape

This summer’s complex runway improvement project at the Charles M Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS) is approaching its anticipated mid-October substantial completion date Paving of the runway and various taxiway enhancements is nearing completion Several night closures of the Airport will soon be required to complete the pavement marking operations As always, weather (rain!) will be a factor in the timely completion of the project

On approximately October 1st, the new taxiway configuration utilizing Taxiway A will be implemented and the temporary use of a portion of Runway 14-32 as an interim taxiway will be discontinued All air traffic will continue to use Runway 2-20 in its temporary configuration Once Runway 14-32 is reopened (anticipated by October 15th), Runway 2-20 will be temporarily closed to permit its final remarking and restriping Throughout the project, public air service by the Airport’s air carrier, Alaska Airlines, has been unaffected

During the recent Pacific Coast Air Museum’s Wings Over Wine Country Air Show held at the Charles M Schulz-Sonoma County Airport, portions of Runway 14-32 were temporarily reopened to facilitate the air show performance As a result, air show attendees were able to get a front-row view of the performing aircraft

The Pacific Coast Air Museum hosted the 2014 Wings Over Wine Country Air Show on September 20 and 21, 2014 The show took place at the Charles M Schulz-Sonoma County Airport and featured top aerobatic performers, classic aircraft, and a flight demo by a U S Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft

Aerial acts included Dan Buchanan and his hang glider, Jacquie Warda and her Extra 300 aerobatic plane, Frank “Dr D” Donnelly doing old-time aerobatics, and Greg Colyer flying high-speed maneuvers in his T-33 jet trainer The Red Star aerobatic team is a civilian group that demonstrated close formation flying in their CJ-6 trainers, a Chinese design from the 1950s They performed the “Missing Man” maneuver, which pays tribute to aviators who have passed on

Chuck Aaron flew the Red Bull aerobatic helicopter, performing loops, rolls, and other inverted maneuvers that would spell disaster for any ordinary helicopter and pilot But this is normal for Chuck, as he is one of only three civilian pilots in the world certified to perform such audacious aerobatics safely

We were treated to two very special aircraft visiting from the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California Their P-38 Lightning and F4U Corsair both stood on display on the air show ramp, and early in the afternoon they took to the skies with other historic military and civilian aircraft The P-38 was a special treat, as the Charles M Schulz-Sonoma County Airport started off as a training base for P-38 pilots during World War II, and not many P-38s have been seen here since

By far the biggest crowd pleaser was the U S Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey, which features large rotors or propellers on big engine pods that can tilt forward to make the craft fly like a conventional aircraft and then tilt upward to enable it to land and take off like a helicopter Two of these big machines were parked near the airport terminal One lifted off later in the day to demonstrate their power and maneuverability

There were plenty of excellent food vendors, novelty and gift vendors, veterans’ groups, and other organizations present on the ground to satisfy anyone’s interests or needs Many pilots placed their personal aircraft on display for the show, so visitors could get a close-up look at classic biplanes, everyday civilian aircraft, and small and affordable “Light Sport Aircraft” or LSAs The Pacific Coast Air Museum (PCAM) displayed all its “climb-aboard” aircraft and had crews standing by to assist people in and out of the planes’ cockpits PCAM is one of the very few places in the country where you can sit in the cockpit of a genuine F-4 Phantom, F-16 Viper, or any of about thirty other classic aircraft The Museum also displayed the planes of its Flying Wing, a special division that is restoring a number of modern and classic aircraft to flight status

Join the Pacific Coast Air Museum again next year for the 2015 Wings Over Wine Country Air Show, taking place September 26 and 27, 2015 Watch the PCAM website at www pacificcoastairmuseum org or the Wings Over Wine Country Website for details:

September 23, 2014 News: Santa Rosa, CA KaiserAir has announced several changes in their operations at the Charles M Schulz – Sonoma County Airport The most recent change is the removal of the “grassy knoll” that has been a partial obstruction for pilots entering and leaving the KaiserAir ramp area Earlier this year, Airport administration and KaiserAir reached an agreement to have the mound removed and a new concrete surface added to match the surrounding pavement According the Glenn Barrett, VP Maintenance & FBO General Manager, “I cannot believe the difference removing the mound has made You really don’t appreciate the size it occupied until you see the new ramp ”

In other KaiserAir news, their maintenance program continues to grow The KaiserAir maintenance team just finished a partial 5,000 landing maintenance event of a Gulfstream IV Barrett continued, “the 5,000 landing maintenance inspection is the single largest inspection for a Gulfstream IV We split the inspection into two parts to take advantage of a planned downtime to install our FANS 1/A solution into the prototype aircraft We will finish the inspection when the aircraft gets closer to the 5000 landing interval which should occur in late January I am very proud of our team for finishing the maintenance work ahead of schedule ”

Regarding the FANS 1/A installation, Barrett told us “ FANS and ADS-B are big deals to Gulfstream operators worldwide By developing a FANS 1/A STC for the Gulfstream IV and V we bring the only certified solution to the marketplace This will result in many Gulfstream operators from all over the world, coming to Sonoma County to get their installations completed That program along will have a huge economic impact to the community ”

KaiserAir has a rich heritage dating back to 1946 as the flight department of industrialist Henry J Kaiser’s family of companies For over 60 years KaiserAir has maintained a perfect safety record while operating and maintaining aircraft manufactured by Boeing, Bombardier, Cessna, Hawker and Gulfstream With FBO operations in Oakland California (OAK) and Santa Rosa California (STS), KaiserAir is the premier MRO/FBO in the region For further information contact Rick Brainard at 707 528 7400 or rbrainard@kaiserair com

Great Escape Event to Raise Money for Valley of the Moon

by Brandon Jewell, Active 20-30 Club #50 Member

The Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa (Club #50) will be hosting the Third Annual Great Escape Suitcase Party on Friday November 7th The club will be partnering with the Valley of the Moon Children’s Center (VMCC) in Santa Rosa, which provides supportive and educational services for the abandoned, neglected and abused children of Sonoma County

The Great Escape fundraiser is a unique event that invites guests to enjoy a night of cocktails, gourmet food, dancing, and exclusive auction items The event will take place at the Sonoma Jet Center in Santa Rosa Attendees will have the opportunity to win an elite getaway for two with the winners hopping on a private jet that night to enjoy a VIP weekend in Las Vegas, complete with 5-star hotel accommodations, and cash to enjoy the destination

Half of the funds raised from this year’s Great Escape event will go to the Valley of the Moon Children’s Center dental program “It ensures that our community’s most vulnerable children receive dental care in an environment that recognizes their special circumstances,” explains VMCC Community Program Manager Meg Easter-Dawson

The other half of the funds raised will go into the 20-30 club’s Youth Benevolent Fund, a reserve of money that is dispersed to charities and youth programs throughout Santa Rosa All of the 20-30 club’s efforts are donated, allowing 100% of the funds raised to go to local children

Donations from local dentists allow dental care at VMCC to be provided at reduced costs The average cost per

5

child is $552, though Dawson says that dental care can cost upwards of $7,000

“Dental care is expensive, but extremely important at a young age,” explains Active 20-30 member and Great Escape Co-Chair Kirk Faris “We hope to bring in enough money to help several of the children get the dental care they need ”

Tickets are $200 per person or $175 for a No Fly ticket, meaning you can enjoy the festivities, but will not be entered to win the weekend getaway Tickets can be purchased from the Great Escape website at www jointhegreatescape com

The “Santa Rosa Active 20-30 Club #50” was established in 1929 and has since hosted hundreds of events to raise money for local youth charities, as well as volunteer time to assist with other existing charities and children’s events Club #50 has raised close to $1 5 million in the last 15 years alone, which directly benefit children in need in Sonoma County
