Double Ninth Festival - China Also known as the Chongyang Festival, the Double Ninth falls on the 9/9

in the Chinese calendar. Chrysanthemums have a special significance and

besides the profusion of beautiful flowers, people drink chrysanthemum

wine and eat chrysanthemum cakes on this day. It is believed that

chrysanthemums help with detoxification, and also driving out evil

spirits. It is celebrated in Beijing during the golden season of Autumn.

Guy Fawkes Night - United Kingdom An attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament, in London, by Guy

Fawkes, as part of the Gunpowder Plot on November 5th, 1605, was

foiled at the last minute. The attempt to blow up the KIng was met withsuch outrage that each year citizens of the Commonwealth still meet to

celebrate the defeat of the Gunpowder Plot, burn effigies of Guy on the

bonfire, and set off fireworks.

 Melbourne Cup Carnival - Australia The annual November Melbourne Cup Carnival is far more than just a

horse race. It is four days of festivities, including the Melbourne Cup - an

official public holiday, heralded as the Race that Stops a Nation. An

unparalleled celebration of racing, style and glamour with the best

thoroughbreds from Australia and around the world. A swirl of fine

fashion, glamour, champagne and frenetic thoroughbred racing action,

where the greatest horses and jockeys from around the world meet the

great designers and vintners.

 7-5-3 (Shichi-Go-San) Festival - Japan Shichi-go-san is a festival celebrated by parents on the fifteenth of 

November to mark the growth of their children as they turn three, five

and seven years of age. The boys don on haori jackets and hakama

trousers, while the girls wear a special ceremonial kimono. They are

taken to the local shrine to pray for a safe and healthy future and

parents buy chitose-ame ("thousand years" candy) for their children. The

candy is shaped like a stick and comes in a bag that carries illustrations of 

cranes and turtles - two animals that traditionally symbolise longevity in

Japan.
