Vogue Model Manage-ment have been in the fashion business for the last 18 years. We are li-cence holders for Miss Model of the World – China, Best Model of the World - Turkey, World Miss University – Korea and Top Model World-wide in London – UK.Vogue are organizers of fashion shows, beauty pageants, fashion events,

concerts and modelling competitions. More than 70 contestants have trav-elled around the world to participate in these in-ternational events many of whom have returned winners or runners up.The agency has also or-ganized events in Libya and Egypt and these fash-ion events have been fea-tured on fashion maga-zines in Egypt, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Lebanon and Vietnam. Channel 1, Channel 3, and Egyptian Satellite TV used to air

these events. Special guests included, Ambassadors, wives of the Head of States of all Africa and actors and actress from popular soap operas in the Middle East.It has recently been ap-pointed exclusive licence holders for Top Model Worldwide with the op-portunities for the Maltese models to mingle with the best professional people in the industry in London, where designers scout for models to take part in the London Fashion Week.

A for-mer model and dancer Janice Azzopardi started Vipaj Modelling Centre two years ago. The aim of the agency is to offer al-ternative teaching from what is being offered on the island. Modelling courses are for 12 weeks and cover runways, mod-elling competitions, dra-ma, photomodelling, nu-trition and fitness, image and personality. Moreover in these courses models

are prepared to immerse themselves in the fashion industry. The courses end with a photoshoot which can be used as a model’s portfolio to be used for eventual work assign-ments and castings such as runway shows, edito-rial and commercial work. Vipaj is the licence holder for two licences in Italy ‘A New Star Stelle Per Lo Spettacolo’ and the presti-gous international fashion event ‘Look of the Year.’ 21 Maltese models have already participated in the last two years and half

of them came back with awards or chosen for Ital-ian films that are eventu-ally presented at prestig-ous film festivals. Being a photographer herself, she ensures that each model has a suitable portfolio to present to clients as most of the times these port-folios determine whether a model will eventually be booked or not. Janice’s goal is to achieve suc-cess abroad with Maltese models as she firmly be-lieves in the local talent.

RECYCLED JEWELLERY

19 - Runway Affair

An outfit is incomplete without the right accessories to complement it. One never has enough jewellery in her drawer; we tend to buy more and more depending on the current trend. We end up with several old or damaged jewellery which most people throw away. This is how my passion for jewellery design started. I base my designs on transforming old accessories and other relevant found objects into contemporary jewellery. This is not the sole reason why I chose to work with used material. Sustainable design is not only a new trend, but also an important element in the current design industry. We are moving towards an era where pure gold and silver are not the key factors in a jewellery piece. What makes a piece retailed are its unique design, trend and affordable price, and reusing material helps make this possible.

THE ROLE OF AGENCIES We all know how small Malta is. And we all know how many people try to scam models alluring them into the modelling scene promising them the world and literally robbing them money, claiming that it’s a lot of expo-sure.

This is where a modeling agency and a model management company come in. A model should always seek to look for a reputable agency. The model or wannabe model must understand that it is in their best interest to have a back up support from a reputable agency. Any paid work assignments can only be guaranteed if it goes through an agency. A model might do a half day or a day’s work promised to be paid however the model ends up not being paid.

Cheap photo shoots are also scams. They are there only for people who want to make money out of models. Photo shoots should preferably go through an agency where the agency will have a list of all reputable photog-raphers on their books. A model should always ask the fee, what does it include and how many pictures will be edited or if so the model wishes printed. A meeting is always held beforehand to discuss what it is expected out of the model, the wardrobe, make up, hair etc to ensure that on the day, the shoot goes smoothly.

Under 18 years of age, models require the signature of her parents or guardians to take part in any modeling work, assignments, modeling competitions and beauty pageants. Any agreements signed by models only, who are under 18 years of age are null and void. It’s illegal for under 18 girls to model in lingerie or provocative pictures. It projects a bad reputation for both models and the agency itself. Model release forms are also impor-tant when taking a photo shoot. This guarantees from both the agency and the models that no photos will be cropped, manipulated, photo shopped or given to third parties without consent.

IN MODELING Cheap contests are also scams. A contest can never be professionally organized when a model pays little money. Usually it turns out to be more expensive than paying for a whole package. A model should always ask for in-formation about the contest and how much does a model has to pay for hair, make up, photos etc….. or if its included in the fee. A model needs to appreciate and understand that agencies pay hefty fees to reserve a place to represent Malta abroad in international events. If a model had to go direct, agencies abroad will first ask you if you are represented in Malta and if are not, they will ask you to get one as otherwise it will prove to be very expensive and impossible. Agencies pay for a licence fee year in year out just to keep Malta’s place. A lot of preparations are carried out behind the scenes, such as booking of flight tickets accommodation, wardrobe preparations, at the expense of the agency. Should agencies not be around, it’s impossible to ever travel to rep-resent your country in international modeling competitions and impossible to ever succeed in establishing a contact or a network of contacts abroad.

Often the agencies take financial risks, not knowing really was it the outcome. So let’s appreciate the work done by the modeling agencies and the fees that are paid on behalf of the models. And appreciate that these are the only pathways that may lead you to something far more important abroad. It takes a lot of hard work to earn the trust of a foreign company, and agencies abroad are very demanding and very professional.

Nutrition and keeping the body in shape is also very important. A model needs to understand that whichever clothes she is wearing she needs to look good in them. When a model goes to represent Malta abroad, she usu-ally finds herself amongst the best models from every country looking prim and proper, slim and disciplined. Sponsors give out clothes to models for them to wear them and they are not interested whether you like the garment on not. For them the model is just a clothes hanger and if a model is a professional, she wears the outfit without redress.

Everyone wants to model abroad, however it takes determination, perseverance, sacrifices and hard work. We all love the glitz and the glamour and to be in the spotlight. It does not come easy!

Pisces (Feb 19 to Mar 20)Stellar Style: You prefer soft fabrics, such as silk, chiffon and velvet, and glamorous evening looks that sparkle. High heels may be your first and one true love. You adore heels in all styles, even if you don’t wear them that often.

Aries (Mar 21 to Apr 19)Stellar Style: You pick up on trends early—adding fresh twists to make them your own, of course. You love color and favor clean, dramatic lines, but whether you sport casual workout duds or slip into a sexy mini, your con-fidence is always your best accessory.

Celebrities With This Sign: Sarah Jessica Parker, Keira Knightley, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson

Cancer (Jun 21 to Jul 22)Stellar Style: No tomboy, you like to celebrate your femininity through fashion by choosing soft fabrics like silk, satin and liquid jersey. You also favor pieces with subtle luminosity, like a knit tank in shimmering silver.
