ABOUT THE FILM Synopsis: In 1937, an orphaned Chinese girl and an American missionary with a camera came face-to-face in a moment that shaped history. Images from that encounter established evidence of one of the world’s worst atrocities, and a legacy that spans eight decades. At age eight, Xia Shuqin and her younger sister witnessed the murder of their entire family in what became known as the Nanjing Massacre. In the days that followed, an American missionary named John Magee documented the horror, filming the little girls in front of the remains of their family home, creating evidence of the carnage and binding his family and theirs forever. The Girl and the Picture brings together direct descendants of this history as Madame Xia, at 88, shares her memories with her granddaughter, her seven-year-old great-grandson, and with Chris Magee, the grandson of the missionary who captured her image eight decades earlier. The Girl and the Picture brings to light the power of memory to connect generations and create a shared legacy of family, loss, and survival. The film is presented by USC Shoah Foundation, which was founded by Steven Spielberg with a mission to record eyewitness testimonies of the Holocaust and other genocides. Short Synopsis: In The Girl and the Picture, an orphaned Chinese girl and an American missionary with a camera came face-to-face in a moment that shaped history. Images from that encounter established evidence of one of the world’s worst atrocities – the Nanjing Massacre - and a legacy that spans eight decades. The Girl and the Picture reunites direct descendants of this history, and brings to light the power of memory to connect generations and create a shared legacy of family, loss, and survival.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT The Girl and the Picture is about the power of voice and story. It is about standing up and speaking out to bear witness to world events, and it is about sharing personal history so that the past is not forgotten. In this spirit, this film focuses on the life and legacy of 88-year-old Madame Xia, one of the last remaining survivors of the Nanjing Massacre of 1937, which in and of itself is a gift to us, as so many know little to nothing of these horrific events. When I came to the project, I knew that Madame Xia had been interviewed many times about the day when she was eight years old and her entire family was massacred. These interviews for news and films across the world were vital to providing personal testimony to an event that has less than 100 survivors. She gave a human face to the suffering of so many. Her story is also part of the profoundly moving Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders museum in Nanjing as well as a pioneering and extraordinary project by USC Shoah Foundation called New Dimensions in Testimony. Madame Xia’s personal story has been well-documented. In fact, her story was documented for the first time just two weeks after the massacre when she was visited by John Magee. An American missionary in China, Magee was so horrified by the atrocities he witnessed that he turned his 16mm home movie camera into a tool to record what he saw and to show the world what happened in Nanjing. He sent those films, including the images of eight-year-old Xia Shuqin, to Life Magazine, to the U.S. film division, and to governments around the world. He also showed them at the first international war tribunal for crimes against humanity. Even with all that Madame Xia has done to make her existence, her loss, and her survival known – I saw a void in the storytelling – which was in the passing down of personal and family history to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. And this, I believe, is perhaps one of the most important and overlooked forms of keeping history present and human. It is the way we can most immediately feel connected to the past and each other – because, after all, our ancestors’ stories are our stories. And so, it is with this lens that I approached the film.

While Chris Magee, the grandson of John Magee comes to Nanjing to trace the footsteps of his grandfather so that he can bear witness to his own family story, our film also glimpses the sweet and special relationship between grandparents and grandchildren. Madame Xia spends time with her granddaughter Yuan, and seven-year-old great-grandson Yuhan, telling her story of their lost ancestors and hardships she lived through before becoming their grandmother. And then, in turn, to preserve the story of her grandmother for future generations of the Xia family, Yuan bears witness herself, by writing the story down as a letter to her son, ensuring that none of this personal family history is ever forgotten. In the end, I hope that this film is a symbol of the power and importance of bearing witness, and then passing down that family history to bridge generations and preserve our shared history in order to better know our past and ourselves - and to never forget.
