Message from the BoardAfter years of training and lots of dreams made, the Fall Classic is finally around the corner for our futurity prospects and their owners and trainers. This is time of year many owners wait for all year, and the members eagerly await. Our Open Futurity Classes at this years Fall Classic has 17 entries, and our show overall is one of the largest we`ve seen in many years. It is great to see so many people attending our shows and to see the interest and growth in the sport overall.

As September rolls around our Branch`s wrap up their show seasons, all the Branch`s will be hosting their final Shows on the weekend of September 13 & 14 where the membership makes their final push for year end high point awards and individual honours. This is the final chance in 2014 for many of our members to test their hard earned skills in the show pen. And we would like to wish them all success in their finals show, and congratulate them all in the achievements they have seen this year.

The Branch`s are also hosting their Branch Annual General Meetings (please see each branch`s web and Facebook page for dates and information) in the coming weeks. Without member support on the committees the shows you have all come to enjoy cannot be offered. So we ask that you consider running for a position on the Branch committees so that we are able to continue to offer these great venues for schooling and learning.

We have received the dates of our Casino fund raiser - October 20 & 21 - and we would encourage you all to sign up to participate in the Casino. It is an integral part in funding our Association, if you enjoy attending or participating in any of our shows or events (Classic, Open Rider Clinic, Branch Shows) this Casino fund raiser is what makes it all possible. Special thanks to Garry Boan who has helped us for many years in organizing and scheduling this fund raiser, and who continues to provide insight, guidance, and his time to ensure the Association is prepared for the fund raiser.

As much as we look forward to the final shows of the year and seeing all our horses do well in the show pen, and seeing many of our goals achieved it is always bitter sweet to see the Reining Alberta show season come to an end. We will be putting a call out for Board members for 2015 in the next few months, and the Reining Alberta AGM and elections will take place at the Open Rider Clinic in February. Again we would ask you all to consider running for a position on the Board. There are many different positions requiring different time commitments and expertise, but like any Association we are dependent on the volunteers within our Association to ensure we continue to move forward and meet the needs of our membership.

We would like to wish all our qualifiers heading to Winnipeg to compete in the 2014 Regional Affiliate Finals good luck, and to all those who continue on to the North American Affiliate Finals & NRHA Futurity.

Trainers CornerWith Tyrell Smith

How do you decide which shows to attend to show your futurity prospects?

When deciding which shows to attend with my futurity prospects I take a few different things into consideration. Things I look at when deciding are: where they are at in their training, has the horse had full training, and is it developing well mentally. Can it take some pressure and put all the maneuvers

together? If the horse is good mentally and pretty broke I usually look to enter the early futurities or the higher end ones. If the horse is a little greener I like to wait for the later futurities or a smaller show where the expectations are not so high, this allows them to develop more consistency.

Now having said that the prospect with the biggest maneuvers is not always the one that’s the best early on; sometimes that one is not the most consistent. So before entering a show I look to see how the prospects are coming along with the physical part of the maneuver and how consistent they are in them. I look to see if I can put all the maneuvers together and most importantly how they handle it mentally.

Another thing I look at is which programs the prospect is nominated for. If a prospect is nominated for a certain incentive the goal is to take them to that show. Keeping in mind if they are ready to go or not. Most prospects I have headed for the incentives I like to have full training on and be well prepared. Usually the incentive shows are quite competitive.

So basically for me it comes down to where the horse is at in its training and what the prospect can handle. If they are ready then go show, if not I do not want to push them past what they are ready for I will wait. Some horses take more seasoning.

Tyrell Smith trains out of Smith Training Stables in Fort MacLeod, Alberta. Regional Affiliate FinalsWith a lot of hard work from the BOD for

numerous years, we have finally secured the Western Canada Regional Affiliate Finals.

For those of you that are not aware of what the Regional Affiliate Finals are, it is the finals for all of the NRHA clubs in Western Canada (BC, AB, SK, and MB). The top 10 compete in designated NRHA classes, the classes are Open, Intermediate Open, Limited Open, Novice Horse Open Level 1 & 2, Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro, Limited Non Pro, Prime Time Non Pro, Novice Horse Non Pro Level 1 & 2, Rookie 1.

The top ten compete in these respective classes and then the top 8 qualify to go to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to compete at the North American Affiliate finals, which is run at the same time as the NRHA Futurity the first week of December each year, in the adjoining facility (Adequan Arena).

Once you get to Oklahoma City you compete against the top 8 riders from every Regional Affiliate in North America, the competition is tough but the reward is great just being able to compete against this type of competition. We have had several members over the years compete and win, Alberta has some of the best riders and horses in the world and it has been proven over and over again.

So next year gear up, put your best foot forward and compete hard the rewards are yours for the taking. And above all remember you cheer everyone on and have fun in the process.

Fall ClassicWith much anticipation we are kicking off the final Classic show of the year. Thanks to all the support of

our members we have had a phenomenal show season and a lot of fun while we were at it. Entries at all the shows this year have been up from previous years, and are way and beyond our expectations.

And the Fall Classic is shaping up to be another record breaker for us!

Stabling Charts have been created and are now posted on the website (Under Classics – Fall Classic). As are Paid Warm Ups.

The Fall Classic program has also been sent to the printer, and will be made available online for those watching the show at home.

HD2 Sports will again be offering the photography and videography services at the show. Please be sure to contact them for copies of photos, video, or prints from the show. They do a wonderful job and are always a pleasure to deal with. They will be offering online viewing of the Classic, so please stay tuned to the Reining Alberta website for the link if you can’t make it to the show yourself.

Due to increased security concerns this year, Reining Alberta has hired additional commissioners (Security) to monitor the park overnight, and will be locking all entry and exit gates other than the main gate overnight. If you are planning on riding during the night please note the gate closures. Your vehicle may be stopped by the commissioners if leaving the grounds with your trailer during the night, so please be perpared for that as well. Furthermore we encourage all of you to leave your contact information on the stall front of each horse so you can be readily contacted in the event of any health, safety, or security concern.

This time of year is always a little bittersweet for the Board and Show Management, we love to see the new crop of futurity contenders hit the pen, and marvel at the hard work and accomplishment of all our Open & Non Pro riders in getting them ready to compete at such a high level. It is always so much fun to watch these great horses and riders square off and compete in the big pen.

Thank you to all our Sponsors and volunteers who have supported us so much and allowed us to continue to grow and expand our events.

See you at the Classic!

Ask the Judgewith Wendy Nelson

For the September edition of the Rundown Wendy has agreed to score a run and take you through her thinking process when evaluating maneuvers. Please click on the photo on the top right to go to the link to the video. Video taken by HD2 Reining

The horse walked willingly with nice movement towards center. In my mind this is a nice picture.

The first spin to the right was executed and done correctly so I marked it a 0 but she over spun up to an 1/8th so I gave her a 1/2 point penalty (at least from my view from the video, live and viewed from center she may have stopped in the center or a shoulders width which is still in the range with no penalty).

The second spin lacked cadence and the horse started to reverse arc in the last two rotations which resulted in apparent resistance so I marked the spin a –1/2 which is stated poor in the NRHA rule book. We are now sitting at a score of 69.

The first set of circles to the left were executed correctly with correct speed and circumference with a nicely delivered lead change. I marked this set a 0, being correct. But...I was leaning towards a –1/2 the first circle and a half due to the movement of the riders hand slightly checking the horses mouth when she was asking for speed which is considered unfavourable but her hand quieted down towards the end of the second circle.

The second set of circles were a little bit faster with a little greater degree of difficulty with a nice lead change but still just correct. I marked this side a 0 also.

The 3 run downs and stops were also done correct with correct rollbacks and both hind legs maintaining contact with the ground during the slide so I marked all three stops a 0.

The final score resulting in a 69.

Show - September 13Hawker Pavillion Fairview College

The Peace branch has the last show scheduled for September 13th which will wrap up the show season for 2014.

Our show in August had a fantastic environment with everyone helping out and enjoying the day. Saturday night after the clinic, a number of participants enjoyed pulled pork and watched some of previous years NRHA futurity runs. It gave everyone a bit of an opportunity to get together and enjoy a little bit of high end reining. Food does seem to be a re-occurring theme as Sunday brought about a great little barbeque that all seemed to enjoy and saved everyone a trip uptown for lunch. Sunday lunch barbeques, we suspect, will continue into next year show season. Great food always puts people in a good frame of mind and as such there was some pretty happy people making some super runs on their horses. Not only were they going out to do a personal best but the Back on Track prizes, custom frames and various other prizes were highly sought after.

We are looking forward to seeing an even stronger show in September and we know that there are a number of competitors looking at qualifying for the Provincial Challenge at next year’s summer classic!!

Chairperson’s Greetings

We had a great show in August we weren’t sure the weather was going to cooperate for hauling and showing. But the rain held out and we were able to get through the day without too much difficulty. Thanks to all who attended and made the show so much fun.

I’m not sure where the season has gone, and it’s hard to believe but our final show of the season is just a few weeks away. We hope many of you can make it. It is the last show for many of us on the committee so we hope we can go out with a bit of a bang!

We will be hosting a Branch AGM during the lunch hour and the arena will be closed during the AGM.

We are in the process of finalizing the date for our Branch High Point Awards Banquet (offered by the Branch this year instead of at the Open Rider clinic in February) and we hope you can all attend. We are looking at a late September date or October. More details will be posted as soon as the date is finalized.

Due the generosity of all our wonderful sponsors we were fortunate enough to be able to offer many new awards this season. These will also be handed out at the Awards Banquet. Current High Point standings are posted on the Branch web page, and we encourage you all to check out your standings and confirm our calculations. For those in the running awards are given out to Champion and Reserve for each High Point Eligible class.

Finally, we would like to wish all our members good luck at the Fall Classic! Ride smart!

August ResultsThank you all who attended our August show at Prairie Mountain Ranch. We had another wonderful day at this beautiful facility, and a great turn out. Thank you to all our volunteers who spent many hours at the gate ensuring all our riders got into the pen on time. And a special thanks to Cheryl Mitchell for judging and Renee Sheehan for scribing for us. They both did a wonderful job! We are so blessed to have such great trainers in our Association who are willing to help out whenever we call on them, and the non pros are no slouches either! It;s great to be surrounded by so many wonderful people.

As the show season starts to wind down we have seen many people achieve great success and reach many goals, even if it’s just to get in the show pen for the first time. We have seen some of our riders have fantastic show seasons and a great deal of consistency as we see them striving for year end high point titles. Including many new Reining Alberta members.

We had a really fun show last month with the Reiner’s Gone Wild Freestyle. We saw three really unique runs, and some ingenious ideas put to work. It was a hoot to watch and cheer our riders on. Congratulations to Heather Burchnall or winning the well deserved Championship in our first freestyle competition.

We also had an excellent turn out in our Short Stirrup class, which is always a lot of fun to watch, if not a lot o work for Dad (Lachlan Bell) and Pikey. It was also great to be able to see Candelyse Hibberd attend all the way from Florida and have great success after only a few reining lessons.

September Show

The September show is only a few weeks away now, and we are looking forward to our final show of the season. It is always great to see the improvement and accomplishments of our members over the course of the year. And always fun to be given a chance to test our skills in the show pen!

The entry form for the show is now open, the class schedule and patterns are also posted (and shown on page 31 of this newsletter.

As we reach the end of the season this is the final show for our competitors to make a push for the year end high point awards. I think there has been exceptional excitement for some of our new awards this year, like our Prime Time High Point Award sponsored by Marg Fraiser, our Irvine Tack & Trailer Youth Saddle, our Beginner of the Year sponsored by Kerrie Hamilton, our Trainer of the Year sponsored by Megan Ritchie.

and the White Trash Reiners Sportsmanship award. As this is the last chance for our competitors to push for these awards we are expecting some exciting runs!!!

A limited concession will be available on site with sandwiches, drinks and snacks.

Our judge will be Natalie Weichel and we would like to thank her for the generous donation of her time to come out and judge this show for us. It truly wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of all our Open riders and their support of the Association and grass roots growth of the sport.

The South Branch has created some fund raising calendars for the Branch, many have sold already so be sure to stop by the show or awards banquet to pick yours up!!!!
