Purpose

• The RUN WITH THE SUN is an event intended to assist The Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind to reduce their electric bills via much-needed energy efficiency improvements to their office building.  By doing so we plan to be an enabler of the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind to better perform their Mission - serving the needs of the estimated 154,000 blind and visually impaired people in their 11-county service region. Under their current financial constraints, the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind provides employment and services to only approximately 1,100 blind and visually impaired persons. Our mission enables their mission.

• The RUN WITH THE SUN also seeks to educate the running community, introducing them to clean energy options which enable a clean-air lifestyle.

Plan

• Saturday, Sept. 17th, 2016 - Members of the North Texas Renewable Energy Group (www.NTREG.org), teamed with the North Texas Association of Energy Engineers (www.NTAEE) will perform a no-cost full energy audit of the 70,000-sqft office facilities of the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind, located at 4306 Capitol Avenue in  Dallas, TX.

• Tuesday, Oct.25th, 2016 - The advisory committee to the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind, composed of members of the North Texas Renewable Energy Group and the North Texas Association of Energy Engineers, will present a statement of findings and recommendations to the Board of Directors of the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind.  This report will detail the discoveries of the audit and will propose energy efficiency alterations which can be made to their office building.  The aim of this activity is to bring down the amount of energy wasted – and thus the amount the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind spends on electricity.

Page 5: RUN WITH THE SUN - PowerPoint Presentation

Plan, (continued)

• The energy efficiency improvements made to the offices of the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind  shall be funded by lenders participating in the programs of the Texas PACE Authority (More here: http://www.texaspaceauthority.org/), pending the approval of the Board of Directors of the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind.   The statute authorizing PACE in Texas (SB 385) was passed by the Texas Legislature in 2013 and The Texas PACE Authority is now expanding to counties and municipalities across Texas.

• It is the intent of the North Texas Renewable Energy Group and the North Texas Association of Energy Engineers to assist the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind in the accelerated repayment of their P.A.C.E.  program loan and to raise awareness in our community of clean energy alternatives via an ANNUAL foot-race:  THE RUN WITH THE SUN.

Why??

Before engaging in any venture, especially a new venture, it’s important to understand the “Why?” “Why is this a good thing to do?” This is the good we can do: • Help the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind double or triple the number of

jobs they offer - providing good-paying work for blind and visually impaired people, giving people purpose, taking people off public assistance and increasing the tax base.

• Build a case study for more energy efficient (less wasteful) building practices and the conversion of energy demand from coal, nuclear, even natural gas to clean solar and wind-generated power.

• Start a domino effect among non-profit and for-profit enterprises alike.

Page 16: RUN WITH THE SUN - PowerPoint Presentation

Why??

• Help the United States achieve energy independence and slow or eliminate pollution of the air we all share to breathe and reduce the effects of carbon emissions on global climate change.

• Reduce the need to send the US military into harm's way constantly to defend the production and free-flow of oil from the Middle East.

• Educate Future Generations: The Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind is located directly across Capitol Ave. from the Alfred W. Spence Talented Gifted Academy, one of two 80th percentile schools in Dallas ISD; Travis is the other.   Opportunity exists to engage the students as observers and learners in this project.
