My grandfather, Thomas Crowley, began Crowley MaritimeCorporation in 1892 in San Francisco with a single Whitehallrowboat that he bought for $80. He ferried personnel and sup-plies between shore and tall sailing ships anchored in the Bay.He was a hard worker and smart, always anticipating and react-ing to the needs of customers with new and better services.

My father, Thomas Crowley Sr., ran the company in much thesame fashion, only he was a bit more of a visionary. He diver-sified the company in related maritime services and guidedthe company to new heights.

Our diversified portfolio approach to the business remains, butconstant over these past 100-plus years has been a desire to bethe best at whatever we do and to adhere to a set of core values, which form the framework for how we run the business andrelate to our customers and employees.

Our mission is to be a leader in our markets by providingworld class services that ensure long-term company durability.

We Value• Safety

• Integrity

• One Crowley, One Team

• Operational Excellence and Innovation

• Our People

• Customer Satisfaction

• Company Durability

Words like these don’t mean much unless our employees livethe mission and values every day. We do. That’s probably whyin survey after survey we find that people who know Crowley, know Crowley people are the most knowledgeable and customerfocused in the industries we serve. Customers can count onus to work with them, not just for them. And when challengesarise, they know our employees are resilient, resourceful andsupportive. Above all else, I think our customers have come tounderstand that, whatever the situation, we as a company willalways strive to do the right thing.

As you learn more about Crowley from the following pages, please let us know how we may be of service to you and yourcompany.

Sincerely,

Thomas B. Crowley Jr. Chairman, President and CEO

1892-1902 In 1892, founder Thomas Crowley purchased one

18-foot Whitehall boat to provide transportation of personnel

and supplies to ships anchored in San Francisco Bay. Crowley

then purchased his first 36-foot motor launch vessel, shortly fol-

that within a few years, services broadened to include bay tow-

1913-1922 Fleet expansion began as the company purchased

the Red Stack tugs and raised, repaired and converted the laid-

up coal barge, City of Panama. The company began transporting

coal and other commodities to Australia and South America and

entered a partnership that operated two steam schooners and

three steel ships. Crowley also built four 150-foot wooden tugs

with steam engines.

1933-1942 Crowley began offering bulk petroleum transporta-

tion services and won a concession to operate two passenger

services from Treasure Island to the newly constructed Golden

Gate Bridge. The company purchased the oil barging equipment

from Shell Oil and entered a new partnership to perform dredg-

ing, marine construction, heavy-lifting and other derrick barge

services in the Los Angeles, Long Beach and San Diego harbors.

1903-1912 In 1906, Crowley ferried passengers and their belong-

ings out of San Francisco following the great earthquake. The

company later expanded into tugboats and became recognized

as an expert in transporting marine cargoes. The motto “Anything,

Anywhere, Anytime on Water” was adopted and Crowley built a

marine railway, dock and woodworking mill named Crowley

Shipyard.

1923-1932 Crowley expanded into Puget Sound with lighter

services and San Pedro with tugboat service. The company pro-

vided tug, launch and barge services in San Francisco Bay along

with heavy-lift and derrick barge services. Between 1930 and

1932 Crowley constructed three water taxis.

1943-1952 Crowley built its first petroleum-distribution terminal

at the southern end of San Francisco Bay and transported bulk

petroleum from San Francisco to Coos Bay, Oregon, by barge for

the first time. After the war, the company replaced all of its surviv-

ing steam tugs with war surplus diesel equipment and purchased

additional surplus vessels such as a miki-class wooden hull, 1200

h.p. tugs, flatdecks and other barges. The company towed the

U.S. battleship Oklahoma from Hawaii to Oakland after it was

bombed at Pearl Harbor.
