RUGGEDCOM NMS™ focuses upon 4 major functionality

RNMS™ provides Fault management to detect, log and notify users of network problems. Constant monitoring of system status and usage levels Detect problems such as outages or issues reported via traps, SNMP, error/syslogs (Active and passive monitoring). Isolate the problems by using the tools to determine location, symptoms and events that lead up to the problem Aid in the resolution of the problem. Send notifications to Network Operations staff to alert that them to the problem immediately via email and pager. Node, interface, service failures Notification of threshold conditions which may lead to a failure Gather security information via SNMP, Traps and Syslogs to report potential or real security violations

RNMS™ provides Configuration managementused to monitor network configuration information so that the effects on network operation of various versions of hardware and software elements can be tracked and managed.

Version of operating system, firmware, etc. Device inventory Detailed interface information (e.g. type, speed, etc) Model numbers Access directly to a device via Telnet and HTTP ROS® versions and RuggedSwitch® configurations may be archived in RNMS™ RuggedSwitch® upgrades and configurations can be centrally managed.

RNMS™ provides Accounting management to ensure that computing and network resources are used fairly by all groups or individuals who access them. This information can be used to minimize network problems since resources are divided based on capacities.

Who is accessing the NMS system and at what level Logging of access entries with time stamps

RNMS™ is used to measure and report on various aspects of network Performance Performance and availability statistics are constantly monitored and updated Reports are given for performance management for historical reference Performance Optimization Performance data is gathered and reported for proactive management of load balancing and bandwidth management. Baseline levels are established based on analysis of data gathered and used for the establishment of thresholds . When thresholds are exceeded, it is indicative of a problem

that requires attention. Alerts are send to network management personnel

SNMP

The RUGGEDCOM NMS™ Server queries the SNMP capable devices through polling, gathers the responses to the requested information, and places the information in a usable, easy to view and utilize format. SNMP supports alarms and events, which are proactively sent by the SNMP agents on monitored SNMP devices to alert the network management server of issues or events that have occurred or are occurring.

SNMP - Simple Network Management Protocol The primary standard way for management stations to access, gather and configure IP capable devices Forms part of the internet protocol suite as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). SNMP is used in network management systems to monitor network-attached devices for conditions that warrant administrative attention. It consists of a set of standards for network management, including an Application Layer protocol, a database schema, and a set of data objects. SNMP exposes management data in the form of variables on the managed systems, which describe the system configuration. These variables can then be queried (and sometimes set) by managing applications.

MIB- Management Information Base Individual points of data that are described with SNMP that hold data particular to a piece of information

z For example: number of unicast packets in/out, status of power supplies, enable/disable IGMP, initiate an RSTP status changez Are classified as public (defined by the SNMP standard) or private (identify functions or features that are unique to the device or vendor)

SNMP Agent Code that is resident within the Ethernet switch or SNMP capable end device containing all the programmed MIBs and collects the MIB information and holds it for the Network Management to poll

SNMP Server The central component of a Network management system.

z The Server acts as the polling agent for gathering information from SNMP capable devicesz Receives traps and alarms from SNMP devicesz Maintains historical and statistical information regarding network performancez Provides a graphical map of the network components and end devices

Ping - Packet Inter-Network Groper Used to establish the presence of a device with an IP address Used as a hello or keep-alive packet for devices that do not support SNMP but are kept track of by a Network Management station

RMON - Remote Monitoring (RFC 2819) A mechanism that uses MIBs to provide utilization and threshold information and can keep historical information regarding network performance

RMON is comprised of 9 groups of functionality. Ethernet switches and most SNMP Ethernet end devices support 4 groups; 1,2,3 and 9: Statistics: Contains statistics measured by the probe for

each monitored interface on this device. History: Records periodic statistical samples from a network

and stores them for later retrieval. Alarm: Periodically takes statistical samples from variables

in the probe and compares them with previously configured thresholds. If the monitored variable crosses a threshold, an event is generated.

Event: Controls the generation and notification of events from this device.
