2018 TOOHEYS NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE
ROUND 8
MATT'S MESSAGE ceo matt harris
Another weekend of unpredictable results have created what is quite a unique Business Plaza Cup leader board with 4 points separating first and last place while a total of six teams share equal last position.
Round 7 matches saw Lakes United continue their recent good form securing a dominate 38 to 12 victory over Maitland propelling the club to the front of a congested pack while the Cessnock Goannas looked to have turned the corner with an impressive 20 point win against Macquarie. In the Sunday fixture South Newcastle overcome Central Newcastle 28 to 20 in what could be an important win for the Merewether club. The Kurri Kurri v West Newcastle match has been deferred until Saturday 4 August due to representative commitments.
This weekend marks the half-way point of the season and features what should be some extremely close and exciting matches. On Saturday Cessnock host Central Newcastle with the Goannas desperate to string together back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Also on Saturday the unheralded Kurri Kurri Bulldogs travel to Maitland Sportsground to take on a Pickers outfit coming off three consecutive defeats. A third Saturday fixture will pit South Newcastle against Lakes United at Townson Oval. Due to this week?s wet weather the 2017 grand final rematch between West Newcastle and Macquarie has been pushed back to the Sunday and will be played at Harker Oval. The Lions v Seagulls fixture will be the BarTV match of the round and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League).
The senior representative season concluded last weekend with the NSWRL Pioneers comprehensively out-gunned 46 to 16 by the QRL Rangers. While disappointed with the result our eight Rebels thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to represent their clubs and Newcastle RL. We look forward to working with NSWRL to expand on this representative program as well as continuing to establish programs for the emerging rebels and women within our competition.
A reminder to keep up-to-date with everything Newcastle Rugby League including match-day scores by following us on Facebook (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League), Twitter (@Newcastle_RL) and via our new website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au).

CLUB NEWS
THE BUTCHERS PAPERThose who ventured out to a very cold and windy St John last Sunday witnessed a mixed bag when we took on the South Lions. We won LLT and U19s, drew Opens, got belted in Reserves and were disjointed in our loss in Firsts.
The Butcher Birds got the day away to a great start. With 5 of their best players playing touch football for the Knights, they took the field very much the underdogs against Premiers South but never looked like being headed. U20 s carried on the winning form and Open Grade, who have been improving each week, pulled off a draw against the highly placed Lions. In Reserve grade the Butcher Boys were out played and out enthused by a better team on the day. This brings us to Firsts, who without star half Brad Murray, who was on representative duty for the NSW Pioneers against Queensland, couldn?t quite get their combinations right and bombed 3 tries to lose a tough encounter. Congratulations to Matt Atkins on making his 1st Grade debut in this match, he acquitted himself well.
Today we are at Cessnock to take on the Goannas and it?s never easy up here. We are equal on 6 points so
there is a lot at stake. Expect a torrid encounter.

Cessnock Goannas V Central Butcher Boys at home with 5 big games of Rugby League.
Teams of the week are our Reserve Grade Men & Alec Fata. So very unlucky to have a draw, however the team held their heads high and played some fantastic footy. Alec's & the Reggies hard work will pay off.
First Grade had a brilliant game with coach Al Lantry taking lots of positives from a game that was based on our defence. Congratulations on the win.

KURRI KURRI BULLDOGSAfter a long layoff from footy no doubt the Bulldogs will be looking forward to this weekend?s clash. The break gave the players the opportunity to freshen up and work on any niggles they had. Further to this we had four players participate in representative fixtures during this period of club football down time. With Mitch Cullen and Ben Wyborn playing for the NSW Pioneers against the QLD Rangers team in a hard fought encounter north of the border. Congratulations to both Ben and Mitch on your selection a great achievement and opportunity to represent yourselves and the Kurri community and club.
The other two representative players were Jordan Mitchell and Reid Alchin who were selected to play in the Newcastle Rebels development squad against Canberra, with the rebels running out winners 46-22. Furthermore to add to the excitement of selection the rebels were skippered by Reid Alchin, congratulations to both Jordan and Reid your selection is testament to hard work that you put into your rugby league.
Stay humble continue to work hard, be good team mates and develop your game as we at the Bulldogs have no doubt higher honours await if you are willing to do so.
Moreover during the break we had the birthday of the club president Daryl (chappy) Chapman, belated birthday wishes to Daryl a selfless long serving clubman who has held various roles at the club over a long period of time.
The Bulldogs would also like to welcome into the family, Brent Mendyk from Cessnock a talented outside back who works hard at this game Brent will be a welcome addition to the Bulldogs. The other is Barry McGrady from Moore Park, another outside back lookout for his impact later in the season as he settles into the club. It would be remiss if we didn?t mention Dylon Edwards who arrived mid-season from lakes, Dylon has fitted in immediately he has a great attitude and ethic welcome to the Bulldog family all three players.
We would like to take the opportunity to thank our supporters, volunteer staff, players? families and sponsors, you?re unwavering and loyal support affords us the opportunity to participate in the greatest game of all and be the great club we are.

MACQUARIE SCORPIONS
PATRON: MR COL BURNS:
Last weekend the Scorpions were back at home against Cessnock and were successful with very good wins in the Under 19s 50-10 and Open Grade 32-14 and gained a valuable point with a 16-16 draw in Reserve Grade and went down to Cessnock in First Grade 26-6. The wins to the Under 19s and Open Grade has allowed them to keep contact with the sides vying for a semi final spot and the second draw in as many weeks for the Reserve Grade has kept them in the top three of their competition.
Unfortunately the First Grade again suffered from late withdrawals before the game which disrupted their preparation and although trying hard found it difficult against a committed Cessnock defence. Hopefully the squad can put that behind them and come up with a performance against West that we all know they are capable of. I am sure the coaching staff will have all the grades geared up for a big effort against Western Suburbs.
Just a reminder to all Scorpions supporters that tickets are still available in the 300 club with a first prize of $10,000 with the draw taking place at Toronto Workers Club on Saturday 4 August at 3.00pm. Food and drinks will be provided to 300 club ticket holders.

MAITLAND PICKERS
This weekend sees our competition reach the half way mark with round 8 against our coalfields rival Kurri Kurri at Maitland Sportsground. All grades are in need of a win with first grade losing the last 3 games after such a great start to the season. Reserve Grade is 4 & 3, Open Grade 3 & 4, U19s 4 & 3 as well. Our LLT team continue to get better & better every week and are not too far away from stringing a few wins together. Unfortunately injuries are taking a bit of a toll with the loss of first grade stars Jarrod Smith & Patty Robards for the 2018 season; we wish them both a very speedy recovery from their respective injuries. We?d like to thank our very small but hard working committee for all they continue to do, all our canteen helpers and ground day set up staff they continue to give there all for the Maitland Pickers.
To all our Sponsors without you we wouldn?t be here today.
We hope to see you all back at our new home Club Maitland City after this weekend games.

LAKES UNITED SEAGULLS
It was a bit of a mixed outcome of results on our return to Cahill oval last Saturday versus Maitland.
The girls started the day off with a very entertaining and close encounter, up until an injury to one of our Seagalls, Lily, which resulted in the game being called off mid-way through the second half with a nil all score line. Best wishes and a speedy recover to Lily.
Our U19?s missed the jump, trailing 28-6 at half time, but a brave fight back was shown in the second half going down by only two points with a 30-28 score at full t ime. These young Seagulls are really starting to come together as a team and more victories are just around the corner.
Third Grade, with a mix of youth and old head, experienced footballers, are really playing some entertaining football. Running away with a 48-12 victory, Dump and the boys now have five on the trot and hopefully the wins keep coming as the season progresses.
Reserve Grade started like a house on fire, being up 12-0 after the first 15 minutes, but a lack of discipline and silly mistakes saw them eventually going down 38-24. Hopefully the boys can turn it around next week.
First Grade really hit their straps today, with outright lead on the competition ladder up for grabs. The boys really took it with both hands and remained in control throughout the game, putting on a great football performance. Even with four regular first graders out, they were still able to run away 38-12 winners.
Congratulations to Jake Scott on making his first grade debut, it has been a long time coming. Jake has also been selected to represent Malta this weekend against South Africa in an international test match. Junior Rociqa has been selected to represent Fiji against PNG, also this weekend. A big congratulations to the boys.
Thanks to all our supporters who turned up on a very cold and windy Saturday afternoon, hopefully we see you all today at Townson Oval as we take on South Newcastle and hopefully walk away with all five victories.
Thank you for our sponsors ongoing support
WEST NEWCASTLE ROSELLAS
West s LLT. Our ladies travelled to Kurri Kurri where they played one of the best games they have played this season, winning 36 to 6. They are returning again this Saturday to play a very good team and your Wests supporters are hoping you can play as well as you did two weeks ago here.
Tries to Tegan Glover; Sarah Dodds; Hayley Wright; Sara Ross; Emily Coppins (2). Goals Kristy Houghton kicked five and Rhianni Cipta one.
Open Grade. Went down 16 to 20 against a good Kurri Kurri side, however they should not feel dejected by this defeat. They played well but faced many difficulties that kept them out of the game. Your Wests family know that you can reverse this result and bounce back with a win against Kurri Kurri.
Tries to Tyrone Polyak; Reginal Wright and Michael Finucane. Reginal Wright ticked two goals.
West s Reserve Grade. Our players stuck to the game plan and played well, winning 32 to 20, against a disciplined Kurri Kurri team. The twelve-point win does not indicate how close and hard this game was. Our players will have to again turnup this Saturday to again come away with a win. Your supporters know you can do it and will be there supporting you.
Tries to Manu Matoka (3); and one each to Joey Griffiths and Oliver Powell. Six goals to Michael Hendry.
U 19?s. Our young men continue to surprise supporters and opponents by the quality of rugby league they are playing each week. All players and coach should be proud of your efforts. This was a very good win against Kurri Kurri 28 to 6. The score indicates your attacking and defensive ability. Your fans know you will again be facing the same team this weekend and want you to all turnup to keep your undefeated record intact. Tries to Jacob Payne; Felly McHughes; Nathan O?Brien; Scott Casson and Brock Reynolds. Nick Haggerty kicked four goals.
West s First Grade. Our players faced the leaders Kurri Kurri, and the quality of this game showed why they had been leading. It is not easy to rally against such a good team on their home soil, however each of our players did, and did what coach Matt Lantry asked of them, winning 18 to 10. There was so much pressure on our team particularly toward the closing stages of the second half. They stuck to the task and your Wests family are so very proud of your effort. Tries to Willis Alitini; Chad O?Donnell and Ryan Walker. Sam Keenan kicked three goals.
