When or how do you usually choose the floor covering?

I tend to choose the floor covering toward theend of the project. There are so many beautifulrugs and carpets available. I can always findchoices that are great with my fabrics. I love the softcolors of vegetable dyed Oushaks. If a client is on abudget, I tend to use a textured broadloom rug orseagrass. It's a great look for the money. The newtextured shags are great also.

What markets do you attend?I attend High Point and Atlanta markets. I also use

the ADAC Design Center in Atlanta. I like to buy from local rug dealers when possible. I

feel they give my clients excellent personalized service.I use Bounds Cave in Cashiers, NC. I also buy fromTogar Rugs in Asheville. Great selection. For ready-made area rugs, I have ordered from companies with abig variety, such as Surya or online sources.

I purchase custom rugs from wool companies, such asHelios. We use these to stay in a budget or complementpatterned rugs. Custom outdoor rugs are a popularchoice for outdoor living areas in themountains.

How important is it to you that somethingbe "new" or "green"?

It's not important to have the next, new thingto me. I love the look and quality of a classicgood rug. I have had some interest andrequests for green products. I do see this nichegrowing, as people become more aware of"green" products.

Have you ever used a rug in an unusualway with a client?

I have used kilims as upholstery for chairsand other furniture. I love the texture it givesto the room.

How do you choose the floor covering?

Our choice depends upon our clients andwhat they are looking for, frequently in thedesign, but often depending on price.

What markets do you attend?I regularly go to High Point and Atlanta, often the Design

Center in Boston. If we are looking for a fine rug, perhapsParamus or Secaucus, NJ, where they carry a wide selectionof high end rugs.

Do you have a favorite source?I work a lot with Jaipur, Trans-Ocean and Chandra. Lately

it has been more transitional and contemporary. I haven’tdone a lot of custom, but sometimes I need to order acustom rug, either for the color or the size. When I have astaircase and a landing which is difficult, I will ordercustom. Then, I turn to Fabrica or possibly Stark.

Any favorite style?I like large patterns, enjoy the

brightly colored Ikats and someof the Tibetan rugs that arevegetable dyed.

Do you shop online?I only “window shop” on the

computer to discover what isavailable.

Have you ever used a rug inan unusual way?

I have worked with someonewho used their Oriental silk rugon a dining table for a Moroccandinner, which was quite unusualand effective.
