Prices for rugs were raised this spring, and withthe current increases, you can expect another roundof price increases this fall.

One of the many things that has happened to thehand knots is that there is now a shortage of over-sized (10’x14’ and larger) Iranian Persian rugs.Firstly, the repair and restoration of Iranian Persianrugs has beenstopped by theembargo of ship-ping Iranian rugsinto or out of theUS. Persian de-signs from othercountries are stillavailable, al-though that sup-ply in knottedrugs is shrinkingbecause of thedifficulty in find-ing weavers. It isthe length of therug/carpet thatdetermines theweaving time, soa 12x20 takes atleast 50% longerto come off loomthan a 10’x14’. Inother words, getused to waiting.

As to findingoversized Persianrugs, we haveheard that you can find oversized Persians at our ad-vertisers: Tepp Team, Momeni, and Romani. I know,a blatant plug, but they do carry inventory. The com-plaint originated with our friends at Marjan, whohave a warehouse full of Persian rugs for resellerswho buy quantity.

Wool is at the highest price in 20 years, and cot-ton is at an all time high. And guess what, both com-modities are hard to find, and harder to find in quan-tity. On average yarn prices for synthetic and natural

fibers have risen 40%-60% with most of the increasecoming in the last three months (1st Q 2011).

After cost increases were announced, and price in-creases in the market became common, firmsstopped ordering tufted rugs in India. At the mo-ment, producers are looking for orders. Without or-ders, they will loose workers and the supply poten-tial will go down not up. Prices can’t go down be-

cause the yarnprices are setglobally, and thecost of living isrising. The work-ers have to eat,and food is a ma-jor part of theirdaily expense.

If there are noorders, thenthere is no workfor the weavers, and they go lookfor work else-where. Problemis they don’t allcome back.

Now there iscommodity de-mand. At a recentwool auction theChinese bought40-60% of thefall clip. Otherstories have theChinese buying

80% of available carpet wool. We hear that it is diffi-cult to get Indian wool. So, there is a shortage at pro-duction at the farm. There is a shortage in the mar-ket, but the Chinese are buying.

Synthetic fibers in a machine woven product areno better. All the material costs have risen dramati-cally, and the buyers are cutting the size of a rug tohold a price point. A 5’x8’ is now a pregnant 4’x6’.The machine woven category is now almost com-pletely transitional/contemporary designs, and gen-erally the largest size available is an 8’x10’/8’x11’.

Excited about attending the April Furniture Market? Here’s a sneakpeak at what upholstery trends you’ll be seeing.

Fabric trends continue to evolve beyond tradition even though theymight be “historic in origin”. With innovative weave structures, tex-tures, and current art, fabrics look fresh. Color, as always, is the sin-gle most important aspect of any textile.

One trend that continues to be relevant across the board is the“Natural “ story. Whether the fiber is natural or not, the perception hasto be “natural” as opposed to manmade. Linen looks continue to dom-inate the fabric world.

Tesauro has a fiber content of rayon, linen, and cotton. While the design is based on an 18th centurydamask, it has been contemporized with a subtle ombre in the ground and home spun feel. Piacenza, asmall lattice, coordinates with the damask while using the same fiber content. A coarse stripe, Fermo,

with its thick cotton content, follows through with the natural fiber trend.

Ariana Rugs Wins Award at Domotex

This January Ariana Rugs won the Best Traditional Workshop/FormalDesign Award at the Domotex Carpet Design Awards in Hannover,Germany. The winning design in this category was a Polonaise Designfrom the Safavid era 16th century Persia. This rug has a hand spun woolpile with hand spun silk highlights.

There is quite a history to the rich and elegant Polonaise carpets dur-ing the Safavid period. Apparently the workshops were allowed, whenthey had time, to work for other clients as well as the Shah. A numberof these rugs have thus ended up in Europe and have survived into thiscentury in the collections of the Kings of Denmark, the Hapsburgs inAustria, the Czartoryskis of Poland and the Royal House of Savoy inItaly. Others were given as diplomatic gifts by the Shah. TheMetropolitan Museum in New York received a gift of a Polonaise carpetwith silk, gold and silver threads from John D. Rockefeller, Jr. in 1950.The Polonaise carpets have become prized possessions.

In this year’s contest, 189 carpets were presented for participation. There were 11 categories, including best liked by visitors. For the firsttime the competition was open to non-exhibitors as well as exhibitors atthe trade show. As Enrich Pastor commented, “The mixing of old tradi-tions with new designs, fashionable colors with old techniques shows;through the Carpet Design Awards, that the hand made rug industry isconstantly able to keep injecting new life into this ancient craft tradi-tion.”

The judges were John W. Bain, United Kingdom, currently Brinton’sGlobal Commercial Design Director; Enric Pastor, currently of ADArchitectural Design, Spain; James A. Ffrench, a director of BeauvaisCarpets, New York; Ewald Schlogel, Austria, a senior carpet buyer andproduct developer with XXXLutz KG: and David Sorgato, Italy, Founderof the Michail Gallery in Milan and Chair of the Judging Panel.

Arsizio, (above) continues in the realm of what’s “old is new” takingLace from yesteryear and updating it as upholstery fabric with di-mensional relief. Dramatic contrast in value helps achieve the mod-

ern look of this pattern. Lace is also a current trend in women’s apparel.

“What’s old is new”, this trend is about a subconscious remembering of your childhood and the comforting warmth of your matri-archs. This concept takes very familiar textiles, like crocheted Doilies or Lace and updates them for the modern age.

Savonna, emulates a pineapple Doily, shown in a con-temporary color combination using gray and off white.Gray continues to be a neutral that is in the forefront.

Yellow is a color trend that is beginning to emerge. This color cast has been removed from neutrals during the past years. We havegone from warm (yellowed) beiges to cooler grays and redder neutrals. This absence has opened the doors for yellow to pop back intothe forefront. This color will be shown as accents only (not solids) in order to make this fashion color more livable for the consumer.

Taranto (above)is a novelty pattern that draws from the punctua-tion marks of a typewriter (you’ll see more novelties emerge nextseason). Pozzuoli is a small scale non-mirrored stripe that is con-temporized with a curvilinear movement while highlighted with anancient ottoman empire ”crescent moon”. Cescena is a multicol-ored all over geometric. All three fabrics, while yellow in feel, arewoven with off-white, neutrals, and grays. I call this color combi-

nation “Goldfinch”.

Multicultural inspiration continues to be a strong trend especially from Central Asia (Rajasthan, Uzbekistan, etc). While theSuzani medallion motif has run its course with over saturation, other less familiar motifs are coming forward. These tribal textiles

typically are embroidered, ikat, and/or appliquéd in structure in their original tribal form.

Veneto, (below) while inspired from a traditional nomadic motif, isshown here in color “Majolica”. Orange has made a strong impact

over the past several years and continues to be a fashion forward color.

The comfort of tradition inspired by historic rug motifs continues to be a mainstay. Heavy weight tapestries, with coarse cottonyarns, give both a sense of quality and durability. This construction goes well with leather and yet the luxurious quality has a look

of comfort and ease.

Ancona (left) is based on ahistoric Aubusson rug. Thecolor ”Tea Rose” mixes neu-trals with a touch of pink, illustrating how a fashioncolor can be soothing and

livable.

Zenlae (above) a bold, masculine, and assertive design motif, whilebased on historic reference, brings an elegance to any room, as well, is

leather friendly. Novelty fabrics are beginning to emerge. These fabrics

can cater to any type clientele (from contemporary to classic).

Cucciolo,(above) which means “puppy’ in Italian, has buckles andstraps with silhouettes of various pedigree dog breeds.

The next trend is the revitalization of “florals”. While textiledesign historically has been dominated by floral designs theirabsence has been noted by many. Taking flowers and creatinginnovative art and weaves, while using unexpected colorations

can give this genre a fresh face.

Potenza, (right) is an explosion of paint creating an abstract “poppy”like motif, this coupled with matelasse leaves contemporizes what

was once a stale category, the floral.

While we are living in a new world, we must not forget where we’ve come from. It’s apparent that today’s fabrics are fresh andnew, yet the glimmer of historic fabric reference prevails.

All fabrics shown are from the Wesley Mancini Collection at Home Fabrics.

Wesley Mancini has been involved in domestic fabric design for the past 28 years with the Wesley Mancini by Home Fabrics lineof upholstery. He also designs decorative trimmings and drapery hardware for Classical Elements. When and how do you choose your floor covering?

We select our floor covering depending on theneeds and desires of our client. Durability andsustainability are all very important factors, aswell as aesthetically pleasing. When we aredoing a large commercial job, we startwith the wall-to-wall carpet color andeverything revolves around that. Therug in a space is usually our jumpingoff point.

What markets or design centers doyou attend?

We attend the Atlanta Gift Show andthe High Point Furniture Marketregularly. We also visit the AtlantaDesign Center at least once a month toobtain more inventory for our own use. However, we are fortunate to haveTogar Rugs here in our town. They arealways very helpful andaccommodating. We are particularlydrawn to Oushaks, the extremelymuted ones as well as the Tibetanwoven rugs.

Do you have any favorite styles or fibers? We love to use natural sea grass or sisals. They are an affordable choice, as well as being

beautiful in a variety of rooms — from sunrooms to large living rooms. We like DMI andMerida Meridian.

Have you ever used a rug in an unusual way?We have found old rugs and used them on ottomans.

Do you shop online, use catalogs, or buy custom? All of the above. From our favorite companies—those whose quality, delivery, etc. we

are familiar with—we feel comfortable ordering on-line and by catalog. We find StarkCarpet very accommodating and use them often. Any type of antique rug, we have to seeit, feel it, and walk on it, before we would buy it for a client.

When do you choose your floor covering?

Whether the client brings their own arearug to the project, or we are starting fromscratch, I begin almost every project withthe living room rug. For me, it is the anchorfor the room and everything I choose relates backto the rug. It is a great starting point for the restof the home and helps set the tone for the designthroughout.

What markets do you attend? Any favorite source or style?

Because I live in New York City, I try to attendall the markets here. The Architectural DigestHome Show and the New York International GiftFair are my favorites.

My favorite rug source is Studio Four NYCbecause in addition to their well-editedbroadloom carpet selections, they have anamazing collection of custom rugs. Everythingfrom hand woven and hand knotted to flatweave designs and sources from all around theworld. My favorite is the Florence Broadhurst line of hand knotted wool and silk rugs. They are based on designs from the ‘70s of the famous Australian wallpaper designer. Iam a geometric person at heart, so tend to like an area rug with nice, clean graphic lines—sometimes subtle and sometimes bold.

Have you ever used a rug in an unusual way?I had a client who had a weekend home and four children. The client requested a

durable carpet, installed wall to wall on the screen porch that would withstand all sportsand could be easily cleaned. I went out of my aesthetic and comfort zone and specifiedastro-turf! It became an ‘indoor sports arena’ for the family. It could be easily cleaned, and best of all it was inexpensive and easy to install.

Do you shop online, use catalogs or buy custom rugs?I believe in more hands-on custom applications for my clients. Therefore I have never

purchased carpets on line, I like to see and feel the carpets. I want to see the actual colorsand weaves of the carpets. I love the entire design process of a custom carpet and thecollaboration with the vendor as well as my client to come up with the perfect design.Because so much goes into the design, custom rugs are truly like works of art for the floor!
