Very good in theoriginal printed wrappers, with 4 pages of publisher'sadvertisements at the front, and 32 pages ofadvertisement's at the back. The wrappers are lightlysoiled, with two very small tears at the spine ends. Thefolded gatherings are stapled as issued, and the text pagesare clean, tight and surprisingly fresh, being printed on ahigh-quality paper. The pages of advertisements arebrowned, with some chipping to the first two leaves atthe staples. Very scarce. Boards a bitsoiled, and corners slightly worn, a solid, very good orbetter copy. Published (sort of) anonymously, this copy isInscribed by the author: "G.A. Cunningham, Jr. with thekindest regards of the Author. Colon, P.I. 1893." Theauthor, James Stanley Gilbert, worked in the isthmus ofPanama starting in 1886 for the Panama RailroadCompany, later becoming an agent for a steamshipcompany. He was one of the first Americans to writeabout pre-canal Panama, and was known as "The Poet ofPanama." While his poetry was both popular and well-regarded in a Kiplingesque-manner, his status as abusinessman-poet hurt his reputation with criticsgenerally.
