Ruddells begins with John Ruddell (1695-1791) who married Mary Cook, daughter of Comelius/Neal and Ann Cook who lived in Shenandoah County, VA. In 1746 John and his sons built a mill on Smith Creek" probably establishing the first "Ruddell's , Mill" and a business that some members of future generations would follow. Their known children w.ere: (1) John, Jr.; (2) Cornelius; (3) Ann; (4) Colonel Stephen; (5) Archibald; (6) Captain Isaac; (7) Clara; and (8) George. The Kentucky frontier experiences of Captain Isaac Ruddell and his company of volunteers and others in 1780 at Ruddles Station.in then Fayette COU11ly, VA, now HalTison County, KY. are well known. The Station was captured by the British and their Indian allies with the survivors being marched northward into captivity. Among the captives were Captain Isaac and his nephew, Jmnes Ruddell, the ancestor of the Ruddell fmnily in Granl Coullly. ' Jmnes Ruddell was born 20 August 1758, the,third oftcn known childrcn of rank of Sgl. Hewas born 1750-60, and his wife, whosename is unknown, was probably bom inIIle smne tune period.
