Garden Updates

Cain Garden

The Garden in the Forest was dedicated in 2012 inmemory of James B. and Lillian Cain throughgenerous grants from the Cain, Murchison and KohlFoundations along with Keep Athens Beautiful. Thisarea features a short, paved trail surrounded bybeautiful gardens, statues and trees that provideplenty of shade. Many new plants have been donated to thisgarden, and new pathways connect our trails withadditional shaded benches. Low-lying brush has alsobeen removed to expand the space. ETABS boardand staff members hope to eventually connect thistrail with the Carl D. Frentress Hickory Loop trail.

Children’s Garden

The Children’s Garden at the East TexasArboretum is not only home to play equipment andfun gadgets for kids, it is also a great place to watchbirds as they flit and flutter in fountains and small, shaded baths about the area. The wooden footbridgenear our children’s playhouse has been newlyrenovated to improve its safety and quality for futurefield trips and visitors.

Ruby Key Garden

Ruby Key Garden is one of the East TexasArboretum's most recently refreshed and redesignedspaces. Already hailed by visitors as the "mostbeautiful area on [our] grounds," this memorialgarden can make the perfect backdrop for a wedding,a proposal or even just a quiet picnic. New additions to the garden include hardy plantslike sedum, ligustrum and agave, a beautiful desertwillow tree and multiple stone fountains. Donationsmade to support the Ruby Key Garden will help fundits upkeep and maintenance.

Wofford House kitchengarden produce donated tolocal food pantry For nearly 20 years—since the Wofford familyhome was donated and relocated to the grounds ofthe East Texas Arboretum in 2001—staff andvolunteers have maintained a demonstration kitchengarden behind the Wofford House Museum. Thegarden not only adds to the rustic appeal andhistorical accuracy of the 1850s farmhouse, it alsoproduces a wide variety of herbs, fruits andvegetables that the arboretum has chosen to giveback to the community through seasonal donations tothe Henderson County Food Pantry. “We pick (the produce) every other day and donatea bushel one to two times a week now,” said ETABSBoard of Directors Second Vice President MargaretDansby. This year, the kitchen garden is producing hugeArmenian cucumbers, several varieties of tomatoesand peppers, annuals like squash and okra, tomatillos, watermelons and cantaloupe, as well asherbs like rosemary, sage, thyme and basil. If you would like to get involved, call or visit thearboretum to learn more about volunteeropportunities—there are plenty of ways to help out,no matter your interest or skill level. “We would love to have more volunteers,” Dansbyadded.
