Introduction to Rubrics Rubrics are an assessment tool used to evaluate activities. A rubric consists of a set of levels arranged from highest to lowest, where each level reflects a certain standard of learner performance. For example, a simple rubric might contain three levels: Excellent, Good, and Poor.

A rubric can be holistic or analytic, depending on the requirements for assessment.

Analytic Rubrics Most rubrics are analytic. An analytic rubric breaks performance into multiple criteria. You assess each criterion separately, resulting in an overall assessment score.

For example, an analytic rubric for assessing essays could have separate criterion for spelling, grammar, and expression. Each criterion can be assessed as poor, good, or excellent, resulting in an overall assessment that adequately evaluates performance.

The scoring methods that can be used for Holistic Rubrics are:

Text Only: Performance levels are expressed using only text. For example, three performance levels for a rubric could be Poor, Good, and Excellent.

Points: Similar to Text Only, but includes points to assess performance. For example, three performance levels for a rubric could be Poor (0 - 74 points), Good (75 - 124 points), and Excellent (125 - 150 points).

Custom Points: The Custom Points scoring method is similar to the Points scoring method, but you can customize the points given for each criterion (row). For example, if performance levels are "Poor", "Good", and "Excellent", then the criterion "Spelling and Grammar" could be worth 0 points, 10 points, and 20 points for each level, but the criterion "Expression" could be worth 0 points, 30 points, and 60 points, making it worth 3 times the points for "Spelling and Grammar".

Holistic Rubrics Holistic rubrics do not break performance into separate criteria. Performance is assessed holistically, so that you consider several different criteria, but make only one overall assessment.

The scoring methods that can be used for Holistic Rubrics are:

Text Only: Performance levels are expressed using only text. For example, three performance levels for a rubric could be Poor, Good, and Excellent.

Percentages: Percentages is similar to Text Only, but includes percentages to assess performance. For example, the three performance levels might be Poor (0% - 49%), Good (50% - 74%), Excellent (75% - 100%).

Create a Rubric

Holistic Rubrics 1. On the course homepage, click More Tools and then Rubrics.

2. Click New Rubric.

3. Enter a Rubric Name and Description (optional).

4. Select Holistic in the rubric Type drop-down list.

5. Select how many achievement levels you want the rubric to have in the Initial # of Levels field.

6. Select Text Only or Percentages for the Scoring Method.

7. Click Save.

Analytic Rubrics 1. Click New Rubric.

2. Enter a Rubric Name and Description (optional).

3. Select Analytic in the rubric Type drop-down list.

4. Select how many achievement levels you want the rubric to have in the Initial # of Levels field.

5. Select how man criterion you want to include in the Initial # of Criteria field.

6. Select your Scoring Method (Text Only, Points, or Custom Points). Click on What are scoring methods for more information on each method. The recommended option is Custom Points.

Define Rubric Achievement Levels

Holistic Rubrics 1. On the Edit Rubric page, click Levels.

2. Click the context menu for an achievement level and select Edit Level.

3. Enter a Level Name.

4. If you are creating a holistic rubric that uses the percentages scoring method, enter a Start Range. The start range for your lowest achievement level is automatically set to 0%. The start range for other levels should be the lowest percentage acceptable for that level. The highest percentage is determined by the start range for the level above.

5. Enter a Description and any standard Feedback that you want to be communicated to users who achieve the level.

6. Click Save.

7. Repeat Steps 2 – 8 for all levels.

Analytic Rubrics 1. On the Edit Rubric page, click Levels and Criteria.

2. Click the context menu for a criterion and select Edit Criterion.

3. Enter a Criterion Name.

4. Click Save.

5. Repeat Steps 2 – 4 for other criteria.

6. Click the context menu for a level and Select Edit Level.

7. Enter a Level Name.

8. If you are creating an analytic rubric that uses the points scoring method, enter a Score for the level. For custom points, you may enter a different score for each criterion.

9. Enter a Description of what is required to achieve the level and any standard Feedback that you want to be communicated to users who achieve the level for each criterion.

10. Click Save.

11. Repeat Steps 6 – 11 for other levels.

Change a Rubric’s Status There are three Rubric statuses to indicate its availability:

Draft This is the initial status for any new rubric. It means the rubric is not yet available for new associations. Note: Students can still see rubrics in Draft status.

Published This status means you can make associations with the rubric. Once a rubric has an association, you cannot change its name, description, levels and criteria.

Archived Archived rubrics do not appear in default search results and are not available for new associations. Existing associations with Archived rubrics remain functional.

By default the Status for new rubrics is set to Draft. When you are finished creating your rubric you should change the Status to Published to indicate that it is complete.

1. Click the name of the Rubric. 2. In the Status drop-down list, select the status.

3. Click Save.

Edit Rubric Levels or Criteria You can only edit rubric levels and criteria if they have not been published.

1. On the Rubric List page, click the name of the rubric.

2. For Analytic rubrics, click the Levels and Criteria tab. For Holistic rubrics, click the Levels tab.

3. Click the context menu for a level or criterion and select Edit.

4. Make the appropriate changes.

5. Click Save.

Delete Rubric Levels or Criteria 1. On the Rubric List page, click the name of the rubric.

2. For Analytic rubrics, click the Levels and Criteria tab. For Holistic rubrics, click the Levels tab.

3. Click the context menu for a level or criterion and select Delete.

Copy a Rubric 1. On the Rubric List page, click the context menu for a rubric and select Copy.

2. The copy will appear in your list. Click on the copy to start making edits.

Delete a Rubric You cannot delete rubrics currently in use by activities.

1. On the Rubric List page, click the context menu for a rubric and select Delete.

Using Rubrics with Dropbox

Set up the Dropbox You must have a grade item and a rubric associated with the dropbox.

1. If you do not have a grade item associated with the dropbox already: a. In the context menu for a dropbox, select Edit Folder.

b. In the Score Out Of box, enter the total number of points the assignment is worth. This should match the points possible entered in the grade book.

c. Select the Grade Item from the drop-down list or create a new grade item by clicking the New Grade Item link.

2. To add a rubric to the dropbox, click Add Rubric or create a new rubric to attach by clicking the Create Rubric in New Window link.

3. Click Save.

Grade Dropbox Submissions with Rubric 1. In the context menu for a dropbox, select View Submissions.

2. On the Folder Submissions page, click Evaluate beside the name of the student.

3. Click the name of the rubric in the right panel and fill it out. If you want to adjust the score or feedback, click Edit in the Score and Feedback column.

4. Check the Transfer rubric feedback to general feedback for the assignment box if you want the score to transfer to the grade book. It will appear in the Score box.

5. Click Save & Record.
