ATLANTIC INDIARUBBER COMPANY
RUBBER & ELASTOMERICCATALOG NO. 500 REVISED
ATLANTIC INDIA RUBBER COMPANY
serving industrythrough rubber chemistry
since 1919
As specialists in custom and
standard rubber items, Atlantic India
has been working with rubber since
1919 to make it contribute more to
the products of American Industry.
Our guiding principle through these
years has always been: “To better
serve you, the user.”
An accumulation of “know-how”
plus constant research during a
period of close to 100 years has
enabled Atlantic India to bring
the full weight of its specialized
knowledge to bear in finding just
the right answer to your specific
question of rubber formula or
design.
Since our very beginning, our growth
has been due to the individual
attention and help we strive to give
each one of our customers—large
and small.
ATLANTIC INDIARUBBER COMPANY
Atlantic’s facilities provide a well-equipped reserve production capacity. We know just how valuable this resource can be to you, the customer, when you are under the gun to meet your production deadlines. At times like this, you need a parts supplier you can call upon, knowing he can go to work quickly on your problem and turn your job out on time. You can’t afford costly delays and deadly production bottlenecks.
Another advantage afforded you by working with Atlantic India is our warehousing capacity. It’s a comfortable feeling to know that our supplier carries a large inventory of parts —parts that are available immediately from stock. If quality, dependability and speed are important factors to you—it will pay you to become familiar with us and our catalog.
Our business was born of the need for better service. From the very start, our creed was to serve the users of industrial rubber better than they had been served before . . . giving both big corporation and small company the best we have to offer. Because of this policy of finding better ways to serve users of industrial rubber, we place the utmost importance on quality control and “on time delivery.”
This policy is the reason we have staffed top-flight research and engineering teams to help solve industrial rubber problems for our customers. It is also why we maintain thousands of molds and dies (which has cut costs for our customers time and time again). Finally, it is the reason Atlantic India offers a rubber parts catalog so comprehensive that it is frequently referred to as “The Bible of the Industry.” This catalog represents a major portion of the standard molds and dies available to you. If a suitable part cannot be found in our catalog, let us know your requirement . . . . We will be pleased to review our complete files of drawings and blueprints before we recommend possible new tooling.

Engineering Properties of ElastomersOriginally an elastomer was defined as rubber or a sub-
stance with rubber-like properties. To the basic character-istics of rubber, advances in modern chemistry have addedfurther qualities so that both natural and synthetic elastomersnow perform functions which were once considered outsidetheir capabilities. Today, any material with resilience ormemory sufficient to return to its original shape after distor-tion is classified as an elastomer. Elastomers satisfy engi-neering problems dealing with shock absorption, vibration, sealing, corrosion protection, friction, holding gases, electri-cal and thermal insulation, waterproofing and abrasion pro-tection.
Natural Rubber (NR)The oldest known elastomer, Natural Rubber offers a good
balance of superior tear strength, high resilience and tensilestrength, good abrasion resistance and good flexural quali-ties at low temperatures. It should not be used where it willbe exposed to chemicals or oil. It does not stand up well inoutdoor use where it is subjected to oxygen, sunlight, ozoneor high temperatures.
Synthetic Polyisoprene (IR)The characteristics of Polyisoprene are similar to those of
natural rubber. The synthetic possesses greater ultra-violetresistance and elongation under stress.
Styrene-Butadiene (SBR)SBR is much like natural rubber in its properties. It is the
lowest priced of the elastomers and is easily formulated withhigh styrene resins to produce tough, hard-rubber applica-tions. Compounding with other elastomers improves its oiland solvent resistance.
Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPDM)EPDM elastomers are comparable to natural rubber, but
offer a price advantage. They provide outstanding age resis-tance through a combination of excellent ozone and sunlightresistance and good resistance to heat, oxygen and low tem-peratures. EPDM’s have excellent chemical resistance butare unsuitable for use with oil or hydrocarbon solvents.
Neoprene (CR)Neoprene is tough and provides good resistance to oil,
oxygen, ozone, heat, flame and weather. It withstands fluc-tuations in temperature, but is poor at consistent low tem-peratures.
Nitrile (NBR)Nitrile has outstanding resistance to constant immersion in
oil. It offers good tensile strength, water, heat and abrasionresistance. It can be compounded to remain flexible at lowtemperatures, but has poor ozone and weather resistance.
Silicone (S)Silicones are exremely stable and retain their rubbery
properties over a temperature range of -120° to +600° F. Inthis temperature range silicones exhibit high resistance tocompression set and provide good release properties, inert-ness, high gas impermeability and excellent electrical insu-lation protection.
See pages 8 and 9 for a chart of the most popular elasto-mers, their physical properties and typical applications.

RUBBER MANUFACTURERS’ ASSOCIATION STANDARD TOLERANCE TABLES
Rubber Manufacturers’ AssociationStandard Tolerance Tables
These tables are helpful from the economic standpoint aswell as engineering standpoint, since we classify by com-mercial versus precision groupings. A precision part, in thegeneral sense of the word, tends to cost more. This is due to
the higher expense of close weight control on rubber stock, more expensive trimming methods, fewer cavities per mold;and similar considerations. Molds to make close-toleranceparts usually cost more to build than those with broadertolerances. These are exceptions to the standards compiledherein. This data should, however, serve as a useful guide.

Molded ProductsAtlantic’s Total Elastomeric Process now offers the latest
molding techniques in a complete selection of elastomers. In addition to the many stocked parts immediately available,Atlantic has thousands of molds for parts commercial to pre-cision.
Over 90 years of experience in custom molding, plus totalcapability in materials and precision, make Atlantic the rightchoice when you need a unique part.
Molding is the process by which a measured amount ofstock is placed in a mold cavity and vulcanized into the ex-act shape of the cavity under pressure and heat. Some moldshave several hundred individual cavities, while others haveas few as one. The number of cavities depends upon the vol-ume required. The loaded molds, some weighing as much as1000 pounds, are inserted in a hydraulic press and clampedshut under tremendous pressure.
Loading stock into the mold is a critical procedure. Allthe cavities in the mold must fill properly, or it will produceincomplete parts. Overloading creates scrap material and in-creases finishing costs. Quality Control watches the loadingoperation continuously.
Types of MoldsSelection of a molding process depends on part design,
degree of precision needed and materials treated. ThroughTotal Elastomeric Process Atlantic has extended its moldingcapabilities.
Compression MoldA compression mold consists of two plates of steel in
which cavities have been machined to the size and shape ofthe part. A measured plug, slightly greater in weight and vol-ume than the finished article, is placed in the bottom plate. When the mold is closed the pressure and heat of the pressflows the plug into the cavity. Since the plug is slightly largerthan the cavity, it is forced to follow every contour. The ex-cess material forms a “flash” which spreads between the twoplates and must be trimmed from the article after molding.
Transfer MoldA transfer mold is made in three parts. The center and bot-
tom plates contain between them the cavities which formthe finished article. These are closed together before load-ing. The top plate of the mold carries a ram which fits into arecess in the center plate. Sprues or holes connect this recesswith the cavity. The uncured stock is loaded into the recess. When the press is closed the ram forces the rubber throughthe sprues and into the cavity.
In transfer molding very little flash results and closer tol-erances are held. Thin cores can be inserted in the transfermold to form holes or slits in the finished article.
