NEWS

A day·late start of spr~ying in the Hillh Plains Boll Weevil Control PrOgram September 24 doused insecti· cide on cotton-eating weevils in over 18.000 acres of crops just below the Caprock along the eastern rim of the High Plains. program official. report .

Spraying was scheduled to begin September 23 but high winds grounded aerial applicators until the following day. according to Ed Dean. Field Service Director for Plains Cotton Growers. Inc. The control effort. now in its 22nd year. is a PeG producer service program that has held weevils out of the concentrated cotton acreage west of the Caprock since 1%3.

. If completed September 27 or 28 or expected . the first application of ultra· low . volume technical malathion will have covered an estimated 55,000 to 60,000 acres. These acres, plus others when and if more widespread weevil infestation is found. will be treated on a 10 to 12 day schedule as neces sary until the wee vil 's food supply is terminate d b y frost or harvest, Dean says. If developments unfold in Hne with projections. he adds. th e program ultimate ly will involve an aggregate of ISO.OOO to 160.000 acres.

Spraying of only about SO.OOO acres was required last year, Dean recalls , thank.s to a highly effect ive program in 1983 and the drought of 1984 which all but eliminated the program of in· migration from out s ide the control zone.

For the third year running . this ye ar's spraying contract we nt 10

McAdoo FI}ing Service. which bid for the job at an average of 56.95 per gallon, the lowest of bids received from seve n commercial appl icators .

Twe lve ounce s of in sec ti cide is applied per acre, Dean notes . meaning the bid equates' to an application cost of about 6S cents per acre . Malathion was acquired for th e program a t

514.SO per gallon (51.36 per 12-ounce application). bringing the per·acre cost of application and insecticide to just over $2.

Total cost of the program. expected to reach about 5600.000 this year including survey. mapping and other costs. i. borne jointly by High Plains cotton producers. the U.S. and Tel8s Departments of Agriculture . USDA is matching contributions of producers and TDA .

Thc first application this year. utilizing nine spray planes. covered cotton in parts of Motley, Dickens, Kent. Crosby. Floyd and Garza Countie •. aU below the Caprock.

Overwintering a nd spring e me rgence of weevils in the control zone this year has been minimal, Dean notes, " but we're see ing a lot of in-migration from cotton out!oide the control 'Zone to the east , so before the year is over we'lI probably be spraying cotton in these counties plus LUbbock, Lynn. Borden. Scurry. and possibly Dawson Counties."

FROM TIlE ABERNATHY WEEKLY REVIEW DATED APRiL 25, 1963:

L & S Manufacturing Co. is a new industry for Abernathy. It is a machine built and marketed by a Lubbock concern. It is the fabrication of the stress elements for the Ivey Mote Oeaner and Lint Press. It is sold to the ginning industry and is designed to eliminate the burning of what was burned in the burr burner. Instead of feeding this to the burr burner. it is fed into the Mote Cleaners and Lint Press . The machine is being marketed abroad. as well as in the home market. The new concern is located where the oil pipe yard operated some years ago by Mr. N. A. Oliver and is unde r the management of his son.

Robert Ashley Lutriclt, first born son . of John Henry Lutriclt and Sarah Elizabeth Scott . was born in Henderson County near Tyler, Tx., October 'I, 1886.

He was a man of very high ideals and has attempted to rear his sons and daughters to recognize and accept those ideals . His philosophy in dealing with civic problems and personal problems has always been to do that which is best. after due consideration, for the good of all persons concerned. It may not be a decision that he would like to make and it may possibly be, or have been a decision that others would not agree with. but a decision of "what is best for all concerned?"

Many times we have been in some degree of disagreement. but through the years I have learned to consider thoroughly his counseling.

I have never known him to knowingly give harsh criticism of a derogato ry nature of anyone and usually he ope nly. either by action or vcrbally . disapproved of such action.

He was a God fearing man, but he recognized the fact that he lived in an evil. and many times unpredictable world . He has attempt e d. and I believe he has succeeded , to keep his integrity above reproach and believe that it is hi s most valuable asset in caring for hi s own business and dealing with hi s fell owman and

neighbots. . His greatest fear. I think, has been

that he would become dependent upon someone else and it would be an inconvenience to them. He has never wanted to interfere with the programs of other people' s lives or routine. He has , when occasion required; attempted to carry out the desires of any other person ' s program of activity as they would desire it to be done.

There have been times that his patjence and temperament would grow thin. but never have I known him to lose control of better judgement. There have been times when he would be the victim of frustration and doubt, but if the decision reached in dealing with these frustrations and doubts was not. for any reason , the 'correct de cis ion. he accepted the consequence, then attempted to rectify it in an honorable manner.

He and my mother. ' Clora Beatrice Sanderson Lutrick. were completely and totally devoted to one another for 56 years and poss ibly the most severe blow of life came when the Lord called our mother and his mate home to Heaven.

I know it is repetition and it may appear that I am bragging, and if so. then so be it. But I feel in my heart that this man is the biggest MAN I have ever known . I feel a certain amount of frustration in not being able to ve rbally say these things openly. but it is my prayer that they may be read and accepte d in ' truth and essence, My desire is that I may continue in my attempt to pa'ttem my (ife in accord to the leading of my Lord and the teaching of my Father.
