Armistice is when opposing sides in a war agree to stop fighting. This is important because on November 11, 1918 Germany signed an armistice to end the fighting.

Bolt-Action Rifle

The Bolt-Action rifle was important in WWI. Most infantry men were equipped with one. It fired rounds up to about 1000 yards compared to rifles from the Civil War that only fired up to about 300 yards. So, it was a relatively big advance.

The Eastern front of WWI was fought in the eastern part of Europe. It was just as important and gruesome as the Western front. The only difference was that the fighting was mainly between the Central Powers and Russia.

These are bullets or ammunition that ignite when fired. These were also know as tracer rounds. They were used for fighting during the night. WWI was the first time this kind of ammunition was used widespread.

This was one of the most important naval battles of WWI. It was on May 31, 1916. It was between the British Grand Fleet and the German High Seas Fleet. It took place in the North Sea.

The League of Nations was created at the end of WWI. Its purpose was to bring peace and stability to the world and prevent another world war. The League of Nations was an idea created by Woodrow Wilson.

The Ministry of Munitions was important during WWI. Their job was to provide ammunition to the British troops. They would send the soldiers ammunition whenever there was a shortage.

Naval Warfare

During WWI there wasn’t much naval warfare. However, there were many naval warships ready to go to battle at a moments notice if needed. The most important naval battle of WWI was the Battle of Jutland.

“Over the top”

“Over the top” was a saying the soldiers used in WWI. It was used for charging the enemy. Whenever someone shouted “over the top,” the soldiers would climb over their trench and charge toward the enemy trenches.

Poison Gas

Poison gas was first introduced in WWI. Chemical warfare was a whole new take on war. There were two main types of poison gas : Chlorine Gas and Yellow Mustard Gas. The gas would burn your skin and give you sores and blisters. If you didn’t have a gas mask, then you could die from the inhaling the gas.

Quakers

From 1914-1919 Quakers were people who opposed WWI. Quakers have been around for a long time. During WWI, they tried to do everything they could to stop people from supporting the war, including organizing strikes against the war.

Respirator

A respirator is a gas mask that was used by soldiers during WWI. It was important to have one of these because of the random gas attacks by the enemy. If you didn’t have one, then you could die by suffocation from the poison gas.

Schlieffen Plan

This was developed by Alfred von Schlieffen. The plan was to attack France and then go back and attack Russia. However, it did not work and because of this attempted plan Britain declared war on Germany.

The Treaty of Versailles was the agreement or treaty that officially ended WWI. It was signed June 28, 1919.

Uncle Sam played a big part in WWI. It was propaganda. There was no real Uncle Sam, but it encouraged many people to join the army to fight in the war.

Zeppelins were used in WWI by Germany. They were giant blimps filled with hydrogen so they could fly. The Germans used them in bombing raids. However, since they were so big they were easy targets for anti-aircraft guns.
