Studentsingrades6-8atReedsBrookMiddleSchoolwillreceive50minutesofSpanishinstruc-tioneveryotherday,whilestudentsingrades6-8atWagnerMiddleSchoolwillhave40minutesofSpan-ishinstructionthreedaysaweek. Studentsingrades4and5—grade5atWagnerMiddleSchool,grades4and5atGeorgeB.WeatherbeeSchool,andgrade4atLeroyH.SmithSchool—will

haveSpanishforapproximatelyoneperiodperweek. ThegoalisforstudentsinRSU22tocompletetheequivalentofSpanishIbeforetheyenterhighschool. Anadhoccommitteehasrecommendedthata$300,000bequesttotheHampdenAcademylibrarybeusedtopromotein-novationandtofundotherinitiativestoenhancethecurriculumattheAcademy. Thebequest,whichwasannouncedlastfall,camefromtheestateofElizabethDe-ShonTibbetts,whosehusband,DorrenceB.Tibbetts,wasagraduateofHampdenAcademy.Mrs.Tibbetts,anativeofMa-chias,diedin2012attheageof95. Thecommitteerecommendedthatthefundsbeexpendedoveraperiodofatleast10years. Forthefirstthreeyears,itsuggestedcurriculumenhancementsinthreeareas: • Promotinginnovationthroughthe

REEDS BROOK 8TH GRADERS ENJOY TRIP TO BOSTON—Eighth graders at Reeds Brook capped their middle school career with a day-long trip to Boston June 16 that included a tour of the USS Constitution and a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. At Fenway, Aaron Grodewald was selected to go out on the field, and a video of him appeared on the Jumbotron screen (above). The Red Sox beat the Atlanta Braves, 9-4, snapping a 7-game losing streak. Ms.Rosenblattsaidthelibrarycurrentlyhase-bookaccess,butthecollectionneedstobemorerobust. “E-booksprovideaccesstostudents24/7,”shesays.“We’dliketousethefundstosetupaplatformthatwillbeeasyforstudentstoaccessandprovideagoodcollection.There’salotoffreestuffonline,butnotthepopularfic-tionthatstudentswanttoread.” Currently,somepopulartitlesareavailablethroughtheMaineStateLibraryortheEdytheDyerLibraryinHampden,butthewait-inglistsareverylong. Ms.Rosenblattsaidthelibrarywillbeaskingteacherstorecommendmaterialsthatwouldsupportlearningandenhancethecurriculum.Shesaidthesemightincludesubscriptionstoon-lineresourcesthatwouldbesharedbymanymembersofadepartmentorspecializedequipment,suchasmicro-scopesorscientificprobes,thatwouldbeusedinseveralsciencecourses.ShesaidthistypeofequipmentwouldbecuratedbythelibraryandsharedouttofacultymembersinthesamewaythatCOWS(computersonwheels)arestoredinthelibraryandsignedoutbyteachers. Beekeeping Club installs first two hives at Hampden Academy HampdenAcademyBeekeepingClubinstalledtheirfirsttwohivesonsiteFridayJune12underthesu-pervisionoftheBeeWhispererPeterCowin.Studentsandstaffwere,insomecases,experiencingtheirfirst“handson”timewiththebeesafterspendingtimelearningaboutbee-keepingintheclassroomandthenbuildingandpaintingthehives. Overthesummervacation,thegrouplandscapedtheapiaryareawithpollinator-friendlyflowersandplantsandalsofedthebeestohelpraiseastrongbrood. AnneCowin,whofirstcameupwiththeideaoftheBeekeepingClub,saiditwasareallysatisfyingexperiencetoseethebeesintheirnewhomeHampdenAcademy—andtoseetheenthusiasmofthestu-dentswhowerehandlingbeesforthefirsttime. “Todayisabigdayforus,”Mrs.Cowinsaidwhenthehiveswereinstalled.“Afteroriginallyputtingforwardtheidealastfallwearefinallybeekeepingonsite,andweareeagerlyanticipatinggettingourfirsthoneyfromthesehiveslaterintheyear.WewanttothankalltheadministrationandtheRSU22BoardofDirectors,whohavebeensoencouragingandpositiveintheirattitudetothisproject.Theyhavebeenrightbehindusallthewayandveryopentoourideas.” Mrs.Cowinsaidthegrouphopestoattractsomesponsorshipsfromlocalcompaniestofundthepurchaseofhoneyextractingequipment.Shewouldalsoliketoseethegroupacquireanobservationhivesothatmorestudentscanwitnessthehiveactivityfirsthandwithouthavingtoputonabeesuit!Therearemanyaspectsoftheschoolcurriculumthatcanincorporatebeekeeping—every-thingfromenvironmentalbiologytothelogisticsofrunningasmallbusi-nessinbeeproducts. Shereturnedtospe-cialeducationatHolbrookMiddleSchoolinHoldenforfouryearsandjoinedRSU22(thenSAD22)asaneducationaltechnician,splittinghertimebetweenLeroyH.SmithSchoolandGeorgeB.WeatherbeeSchoolduringherfirstyearandthenworkingatSmithfulltimeduringhersecondyear. ShemovedtoWagnerMiddleSchoolwhenitopenedupinthefallof1991.Shewasaneducation-altechnicianduringherfirsttwoyearsatWagnerbeforemovingintoateachingposition. 7TH GRADERS RELEASE ATLANTIc SALMON FRY—Students in Michele Freeman’s 7th grade science class at Reeds Brook Middle School released 190 Atlantic salmon fry into Souadabscook Stream dur-ing a field trip on May 26 to the park area off Paper Mill Road. The students raised the salmon fry in a temperature-controlled aquarium in the classroom dur-ing the winter and spring. They started with 200 eggs, which were provided by the Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery in East Orland. The 7th grad-ers learned about the life cycle of the Atlantic salmon as they watched the eggs hatch into alevins, which feed off their yolk sacks. When the yolks are used up, the alevins are known as fry, and they are ready to start feed-ing and be returned to the river.

Thedaywillstartwithapresenta-tionbyNoelMarch,UnitedStatesMarshalfortheDistrictofMainewhoisalsoasinger,musician,andstory-teller.Mr.March,wholivesinHamp-den,wasaparentvolunteeronthe8thgradeicefishingtriplastwinter. Then,thestudentswillbedividedintosmallgroupsforaseriesof

workshopsonthecorevaluesledbyteamsoftwoteacherseach.Followingtheworkshops,thestudentswillgooutsideforafielddayandbarbecue. Afterthebarbecue,thecoreval-ueswillbepromotedby8thgradeteacherKarynFieldandtechnologyintegratorChrisBeckwith,posingastwo“superheroes.”

chancetostatetheiropinion,lookattheopposingside,andthenbackuptheirpositionusingresearch. Forthesecondopinionessay,thestudentsagainwroteaboutcompet-itivesports,buttheyhadtonarrowtheirfocusandlookataparticularaspectofcompetitivesports,eitherpositiveornegative,andtakeaposition. Somestudentsarguedthatcom-petitivesportscosttoomuch,thattheycausetoomanyinjuries,orthattheyaretoostressfulforchil-dren.Otherstudentsarguedthatcompetitivesportsteachimportantlifeskillsandteamwork.Stillother

studentsfocusedonwhetherornottryoutsshouldbepartofcompeti-tivesportsforchildren. “Studentshadtofocusonsome-thing,positiveornegative,andpresenttheirarguments,whileacknowledgingtheopposingargu-ments,”Ms.Sloanesaid. Forthisassignment,Ms.Sloanefeltitwasimportanttoprovideafo-rumthatwouldallowthestudentstohavetheirvoicesheard. “Somanytimes,studentswriteinisolation—theydoanassign-ment,theyhanditin,andtheygetagrade,butthere’snosensethattheirvoiceisbeingheard,”shesays.

The 8th graders also toured the USS Cassin Young, a U.S. Navy destroyer that was built at the Charleston Navy Yard and saw action in World War II.
