EPSRC Grant Success for Dr Edwards

Dr Al Edwards has successfully won an EPSRC New Investigators Grant of

123,495 for his project entitled Lab on a Stick: Smartphone-ready low cost

rapid live microbe detection and identification using nano-coated Micro-

    Capillary Film.

The grant will support a post-doctoral research assistant for one year to

further Als exciting research in this area whichis earmarked for impact in

    the next REF period.

Related to this grant news is the continued success of Dr Edwards start -up

company Capilllary Film Technologies which was featured in Scientist Live

    this week (http://www.scientistlive.com/content/capillary-film-

    technology-launch-new-fluoropolymer-micro-capillary-film-medica).

    Funding Opportunities

Grant opportunities see Funding news on the University Web pages.Studentship opportunities have their own page. These pages list

numerous opportunities for grants and studentships, as well as the

deadlines. Research Professional Onlineis a searchable source of funding

    opportunities and research news.

    ERC Grant opportunities

I hope many will have noticed the increasing number of emails landing in

your inboxes regarding the availability of new ERC funding. One of our

major research aims for the coming 5 years is to secure major ERC grants

that will support some of our emerging research themes. Please take

advantage of the drop-in sessions run by Kirsty Smith to discuss any plansor queries about these new schemes at the earliest opportunity.

    Paper of the Week!

One of Dr Barny Greenlands recently published papers (see October

RSOP Research News) has been selected as the Paper of the Week' by the

    ournal, Polymer Chemistry:

    Dr Gary Stephens, in

    conjunction with Dr

    Mark Carew (Kingston

    University) and Dr Rita

    Jabr (University of

    Surrey) have been

    awarded 800 in an

    application for the

    2013/14 Physiological

    Society Departmental

    Seminar Scheme.

    Details of seminar

    dates will follow in due

    course!

Dr Howard Appointed to RPS Panel

Dr Rachel Howard has been appointed to the Royal Pharmaceutical

Societys Conference Panel which organizes the long-standing and

    prestigious RPS Annual Conference.

    Dr Rachel Howard

    spoke at a South

    Central NHS non-

    medical prescribing

    conference on 4th

    October, delivering a

    talk entitled

    Recognising the risk in

    prescribing: Lessonsfrom the PRACtICe

    study

    Feeling the Squeeze?

Dr Ann Chippindale and Dr Kenneth Shankland have recently taken

delivery of some new equipment for the Gemini single-crystal

diffractometer that allows the study of crystal structures as a function of

pressure. The high-pressure diamond anvil cell, which is mounted on the

diffractometer allows crystals to be squeezed at pressures up to ca 20GPa

(200,000 atmospheres) and even permits the growth of crystals under

    pressure.

Why would one wish to do so, particularly with pharmaceuticals? Simply

because it is another thermodynamic variable with which to study the

structural behavior of molecules and is a valuable aid in the study of phasetransitions and the discovery of new polymorphs. Single-crystal

experiments under pressure requires a lot of practice, as loading crystals

into the cell, measuring the pressure (via fluorescence) and collecting the

diffraction data are non-trivial, so there is a steep learning curve.

Nevertheless this is an excitin new ca abilit that we are keen to ex loit!

Shailesh Patel (formerly a Visiting Research Fellow at RSOP) submitted his

final report to Pharmacy Research UK for his study entitled An

investigation of pharmaceutical services and medication reviews in care

home settings in Buckinghamshire: working towards the development of a

new service model for improved patient care that was funded by a Sir a

Hugh Linstead Fellowship Award. This marks 3 years of hard work byShailesh who worked part-time on the project while setting up his own
